The Linksys Selectable Dual-Band Wireless-N Range Expander, RE2000 lets you repeat the wireless signal of any access point or router to provide Internet connectivity to hard-to-reach areas through a wired or wireless connection.
This Wireless-N range extender can be set up through:
  • Accessing its web-based setup page
  • Using Cisco Connect software if you have it installed on your computer
  • Using the setup software in the CD that comes with it
  • Using the Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS) on the RE2000 if your router also supports it
Front Panel
On the top panel of the Linksys RE2000, the light has two (2) functions:
• Power - The power light is located on the front panel. It lights up when the range extender is powered ON. The light flashes slowly every three (3) seconds when the device is reset to factory defaults or during a firmware upgrade. When the range extender is ready for use, the light is continuously lit. If there is an error, the light flashes quickly (every second).
• Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ - When the WPS process is active, the light flashes slowly. When the WPS is successful, the light is continuously lit. If there is an error, the light flashes quickly (every second) for two (2) minutes.
Top Panel
Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS) button – If you have client devices that support WPS such as wireless printers, this button automatically configures wireless connection and security after initial setup.
Power switch – Powers the extender ON or OFF.
NOTE: This functionality is only available in the European versions of the RE2000.
Reset button – Press the Reset button for eight (8) seconds to reset the range extender to its factory defaults. You can also reset the device from the Administration > Factory Defaults screen in the range extender's web-based setup page.
Power port – This is where you connect the power adapter.
Bottom Panel
Ethernet port – the Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) port works as a wireless bridge to instantly connect any wired Ethernet device to a wireless network. The green LED is lit when an Ethernet device is connected and active on this port.
The RE2000 is compatible with the following operating systems:
• Windows XP SP3
• Windows Vista SP1
• Windows 7
• Windows 8
• Mac OS X®
o Leopard 10.5.8 or higher
o Snow Leopard 10.6.1 or higher
o Lion 10.7 or higher
o Mountain Lion 10.8 or higher
• *Maximum performance derived from IEEE Standard 802.11 specifications. Actual performance can vary, including lower wireless network capacity, data throughput rate, range and coverage. Performance depends on many factors, conditions and variables, including distance from the access point, volume of network traffic, building materials and construction, operating system used, mix of wireless products used, interference and other adverse conditions.
• **Secure push-button setup works with devices that support Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ like Linksys E-Series routers and others.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy Setup!!!

Pros: Simultaneous Dual Band
Two Ethernet Ports
Module Power (Wall Plug or Power Cord)
No External Antenna

Cons: Extender Only
No Passthrough Power Plug

Other Thoughts: The Linksys RE2000 N600 Dual Band Wireless Range Extender can be plugged into a wall outlet directly, but the extender is large enough to cover both outlets on a wall plate. However, the Edison plug can be detached to allow for a power cable to be attached to use the extender on a flat surface. The RE2000 Extender I received has two ethernet ports on the bottom of the device.

The RE2000 Extender includes a setup CD but my laptop does not have an optical drive so I completed setup manually which I found to be extremely fast and easy. I simply plugged the RE2000 Extender into a wall outlet then used an ethernet cable to connect my laptop directly to the Extender. After connecting, Windows 10 automatically opened Chrome to the Administration Control Panel. Using the username and password of “admin” I was able to gain access to the administration control panel. Then using only two menus, I told the Extender my existing wireless network connection information and set the wireless networks broadcasted from the extender. This total process took less than 1 minute.

After connected to my network, I found the speed using the extender matched that of wireless connections directly to my router.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this unless you're a glutton for punishment.

Pros: Nothing - it wouldn't work as advertised no matter what I tried on three different occasions over a 2 week period.

Cons: It wouldn't relay a wireless feed from level 3 of a Tri-Level house down to level 2 - a linear distance of less than 30 feet! I tried everything including a manual reset.

Other Thoughts: I'm no novice - I bought my first computer, a Tandy Model 1, in 1978. I've assembled at least 20 PC computers - never bought an assembled PC. I spent most of 3 days trying to get this waste of money to work. I wanted a temporary internet connection in my living room while we are remodelling our family room. We moved our 3 business computers, our Linksys Router and Linksys Switch upstairs to a spare bedroom while the remodelling occurs. Was trying to get internet to my wife's Facebook Computer which worked great when I had the router in the family room. We don't do F/B on our business computers as a cautionary measure to prevent loss or damage of valuable business data.

1 out of 5 eggsContinually prompts for setup

Pros: Small, simple, would be great if I could get it to work

Cons: Tried numerous times, via both wireless and wired. setup would complete, then soon after one or more of my wireless devices (phones, laptops) would have their browser directed to the Extender's setup page, where you could run through the setup again, it would work for a time, then prompt again for setup.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Robert,

Thank you for taking your time in making this review. We understand the challenges you've encountered with the Linksys RE2000 and we're here to assist you in setting it up to work properly on your network. What's the model number of your existing router? We suggest that you set a specific channel for your wireless network so the range extender will properly connect to it. You may consider having it on channels 1, 6 or 11.

Let us know how it goes so we can further assist you. Feel free to email us the details at LinksysCares@linksys.com together with the link to this post.

Pros: Cheap price ay $19.99.

5 out of 5 eggsGet Those Extra Bars

Pros: Volodymyr Y had an excellent advice

Unable to use provided software, I found a way to setup this extender in different way. Following steps were taken:

1. Connect to WiFi network created by this extender, named LinksysExtender

2. After success connection go to address 192.168.1.1 and login with blank username and password “admin”

3. Click on “Wireless” tab and extender will perform survey of available WiFi network automatically

4. From list choose network that needs to be extended, and if it is secured network you will be prompted to enter password

5. Allow extender to finish configuration, place it halfway between your primary router and site where extended WiFi is required.

After using this information this extender worked great. I did not use the provided CD and it worked great. I'm using this to extend outside to my patio.

Cons: Sometime, the one size fits all CD won't work

Other Thoughts: MOunting options are good. Routers should come with this feature.

4 out of 5 eggsOK

Pros: No where close to the speed my router is putting out, but speeds up my Playstation 4 about 20 mbs.

Cons: Setup is very annoying, kept crashing EVERY TIME.. Called linksys ended up having the hardinstall it.

Other Thoughts: I got mine for $29.99... it boosted my ps4 speed to about 25/mbs. it was getting only 9/mbs wireless.. But take into consideration my computer right next to it is getting 126.3/mbs WIRELESS AC.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsit works and easy to manuall setup

Pros: So plug in connect via wireless give new password , set up for using existing wireless sid, set ip address in base router if you wish and done. No need for the crapware install on CD. Seems ok gives me my intended speed two other half of house that the base wireless router didn't cover full strength. This isn't HIGH END just home use I think but work just great for allowing streaming of movies to other side of house.

Cons: could be better

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent signal and an easy setup

Pros: Nice looking device right out of the box. It’s designed to be plugged directly into an outlet or the included power cable can be used and the device can be set on a desk. When plugged directly into the wall, the device does not interfere with the second outlet on the receptacle. Setup using the enclosed CD was straight forward and only took a few minutes. Once connected to your network, you can unplug the device and carry it anywhere around the house to extend your wireless network. I’ve always had issues getting a decent signal on my front porch. I have a double masonry house and my networking equipment is in the basement causing additional signal propagation issues.

After setup, I plugged this device into an outlet in my living room on the outside wall. Much to my surprise, I was now able to get a full signal on my front porch. I also carried this outback on my patio, plugged it into an outside receptacle and was able to significantly extend my network to encapsulate my entire yard.

I was pleasantly surprised with the signal strength of the RE2000 despite its lack of an external antenna.

The device has been up and running for about a month without any issues at all.

Cons: The documentation is terrible. The user manual is about 100 pages and there is no included “Quick Start” guide. With such a simple setup procedure that will suffice for 99% of the population, the only documentation is in the form of a full manual on CD. I’m totally confused why they didn’t include a small pamphlet in the box outlining a typical setup.

Other Thoughts: All in all, it’s a nice device. Quick to setup, portable with a great range and signal propagation.
