5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 AV600 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit, up to 600Mbps

Pros: Fast, little difference in speed as compared to plugging your ethernet directly to the cable modem / router! Works just as well on outlets connected to different circuits! I bought 2 sets, so I have one connected to the router and the other three give me ethernet connections in different rooms.

Cons: There is no pass thru outlet, so you loose an outlet when use it.

1 out of 5 eggsIt extended my network but it disrupted my existing wireless network

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 AV600 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit, up to 600Mbps

Pros: When it was connected on the same circuit the speed and latency was great. Easy to setup. I was able to stream 1080p at 60fps to my tablet using Limelight for gaming downstairs.

Cons: When it was plugged in with the same room as my wireless access point it would start dropping signal. I tried two different access points since I thought maybe there was some bad shielding in my PoE AP but both had issues. It wasn't until these things were removed and all my equipment was rebooted did my network come back and I could stream movies again.

Other Thoughts: I can't use this now and since it is defective I need to pay to have it shipped back....

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 AV600 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit, up to 600Mbps

Pros: - easy to setup
- works as advertised
- ordered it and had it on the front step in less than 24 hours (and that included free, 4-7 day shipping)

Cons: - buzzing from speakers plugged into the same circuit; this is not a bother and I should be able to isolate it
- watching closely for disconnects while streaming but so far haven't encountered any hiccups
- takes up considerable space on the outlet making other devices hard to fit (must be straightline). My solution was to use pigtails and plug the PLEK500 transceiver into the pig-tail.

Other Thoughts: This serves as an inter-connect between the wireless 4-port switch/AP in the living room (back of the house), with the router and upstairs AP (the front of the house). Wireless gateways didn't give me the throughput I needed for streaming. This solution tested out at 25 Mbps to the Internet (my max allowable download speed). House wiring is less than 10 years old.

5 out of 5 eggsLynksys Saved My Marriage!

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 AV600 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit, up to 600Mbps

Pros: This thing works very well, at least for the hour I've been using it. It allowed my to move my N router upstairs away from the gateway in the basement, where the internet comes into the house. My wife was always complaining about the inability to stream Netflix in our bedroom. I couldn't care less about Netflix, but the ensuing silence has been wonderful. Oh yeah, and so is the complete home wi-fi coverage. The speed is good, at least in my case. Also, props to Newegg for getting the thing here overnight; I only paid for standard shipping. ;)

Cons: It costs money. Frankly the $90 I paid was well worth it, so I don't mind.

3 out of 5 eggsDisconnects

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 AV600 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit, up to 600Mbps

Pros: Very easy to setup

Cons: Frequent disconnects that lasts about 10 seconds when used intensively.

Other Thoughts: It may be due to some house appliances, but I couldn't find out which.

Your own setup may greatly influence the performance. I got good performance otherwise. To avoid the same mistake I did: you need to plug powerlines in the wall outlet directly and not through a powerbar or the transfer rate will be much lower.

I was expecting a device of this price/brand to handle the different variations of current from other appliances, and I am a bit disappointed in that aspect.

4 out of 5 eggsconnected!.

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 AV600 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit, up to 600Mbps

Pros: it sits flush to the wall, so it can not wiggle free.
leaves just enough space so a power bar will fit above it. (must be the straight plug type)
better technology that allows it to be 50% faster than homeplug av (or always faster than homeplay AV, the two prong variety.)

WILL work other homeplug AV products because it is Homeplug AV certified.

gigabit port!... (see other thoughts) and this will make all of the other units faster.

Cons: only single port, thus needs a switch to add ports to it.

Other Thoughts: your wiring will determine the speed.
but in a recent house of 4000 square feet (build around 2004) you will get a minimum of 100 Mbps, and a maxiumum of 250 Mbps.
(and this is from the utility that is supplied on the linksys site. linsys powerline av2 utility)

you will get about 50% to 100% better speeds compared to a homeplug AV, such as an intellon enabled product. (the no longer sold WD Livewire)

it is easy to get other units to sync with it, plug in the Linksys plek 500, then plug in the other unit, then press the sync button on the plek 500 for about 10 seconds , then go to the other unit and press the sync button.

if you have more than six units, sync each unit separately after six... (oddly enough, it will recognize more than six units (at least 8; 4 plek 500's and 4 homeplug av) but you need to sync them when there are less than 6 units total connected.)
if will connect more than 6 units!... only applys to syncing them.

3 out of 5 eggsEasy setup but far from advertised speeds.

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 AV600 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit, up to 600Mbps

Pros: Super easy setup. It really couldn't get any simpler. Plug into wall and either hook it up to your router and your pc. Easy as that. Instantly recognized the other adapter in a couple rooms away.

Cons: Far below advertised speeds. I have the Linksys WMP600N on the same PC and my speeds have always been good but living in an apartment building it is starting to get cluttered with everyone having a wireless router. I wanted to try these out to see if I could get both stability and speed without having to rely on my wireless card. While my wireless card can cap out around 75 mbps across my personal network these powerline adapters could only manage 30 mbps at their best. I tried changing outlets and setting them up again but no luck. My average speed was around 15 mbps. I suppose if you are desperate and have no other option these may work but for the 100 dollar price tag I think they aren't worth it. I will be returning these as soon as possible.

Other Thoughts: These may work in a brand new apartment or in a new house but in my apartment I had absolutely no luck getting what I would call "good speeds for the money".
