Pros: This product works great with Windows XP.

Cons: This will not work with anything higher then Windows Vista 32bit. If you have a Windows Vista 64bit or Windows 7 don't wast your money.

2 out of 5 eggsnot all that great

Pros: Firewall appears to work, filtering seems to be doing the job

Cons: This thing was a really bugger to get set up properly, partially due to my own misinderstanding of what its limitations are. Tech support was horrible - after spending over an hour on the phone with them telling me the same things over and over, they finally told me to box it up and send it back. I decided to do some online research before doing that, and I have been able to get it to work.

Other Thoughts: With the opportunity to do it all over again, I would not purchase this product. It took me several hours to get through the initial setup and installation of the firewall and client config on three computers. My key misunderstanding before purchase was that I would not need a router behind the DSD-150. I thought I could run my cable modem into it, then it into a D-Link switch. As it turns out, you still need a router stuck in there. So now I just have it sitting between my cable modem and router, with the router's firewall disabled. The DSD-150 seems to be doing the job (my router's firewall keep locking down, so I had to reboot it every day) and this has solved that problem.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't even bother

Pros: small looks cool, has lights that flash.

Cons: Purchased this from an online auction, came brand new in box never opened. Was able to get connection after a few attempts but not able to get the setup screen. Called D-Link twice with no solution (what a joke that was) and then they advised me to call Securespot in which I had to leave a message. Appears that D-Link doesn't even want to support this product. Now I have a neat little box that flashes that I have know idea if it is doing anything or not.

Other Thoughts: I thought this sounded like a great option, started looking at these about 6 months ago but because of the reviews being so up and down decided not to buy at the time. Was looking at different firewalls and other internet security options and thought what the heck lets give it a go. Wish I had kept my money. I always try and give accurate reviews and this time I must say you need to leave this product alone. As for Newegg, I wish I had bought from them because I could then return it. As always Newegg rocks!!! and this is where I buy almost all my PC needs.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for kids

Pros: This is a great piece of hardware. It has a content filter on it, so I have it set up on my son's computer (he is 8). I can control what he see's better then most content filters.

Cons: Having to go to a website rather then an IP address to use the controls.

5 out of 5 eggsNice functionality and controls

Pros: All in one package is a plus, decided to try it but didn't buy from Newegg. Great deal on online auction. Intuitive software SecureSpot 2.0, the functions are well explained. Small compact device. Dlink CS answered within a few minutes while on phone. Thin Client software not memory hog running in start up menu, access via SecureSpot 2.0 website complete control via this website once you register and activate the device.

Cons: Took a little work to get it working in my home network.

Other Thoughts: Qwest xDSL ActionTech modem M1000 in passive mode, DSD-150 connect to WAN port and LAN port to my Dlink wireless router DI-624 WAN port with 3 computer on the LAN switch/router. Need to reboot all the devices, M1000 first, DSD second and router third then it started working. Upgrade firmware to ver. 2.

I have not seen latency problems in the internet connection.

Thin Client did not work with Vista Home Premium, works great with XP Pro 32 bit and 64 bit OS.

4 out of 5 eggsD-Link DSD-150 Internet Security Device

Pros: Installed fine, and works well, not obtrusive or annoying like some security products, and with all the work done by a device and not your own PC that's a big benefit, plus being able to support 4 PC's from one interface.

Cons: Wish the spam feature was a little more robust and it made one laptop have to download the software again but after it worked fine.

Other Thoughts: Didn't have any of the problems of the other reviewers, if you follow the instructions closely you should be OK.

4 out of 5 eggsA good web content filtering device/service

Pros: Onece setup correctly, it does what it supposed to do.
Its gives you more choices to select different catagary than linksys parental control service I used before.

I did not install thin client so I cannot comment on antivirus/spyware protection feature.

Cons: I had some problems during initial setup. Because I have a cisco fireware behind linksys router and all my home network is connected to cisco firewall. I had to connect my PC directly to linksys router.

Other Thoughts: In case you have difficulty in initial setup, go to you web browser and type "192.169.229.61", an login screen will poped up asking your username and password. Use "admin" as username and leave password filed blank and click "login". Once you are there, you can activiate your device.

One important thing is that you must upgrade your firmware. Firmware upgrade must be done one step at a time, from 1.01 to 1.02 then to 2.00.

In case your web content filtering is not workiing, go to 192.168.229.61 and check the "info" screen. It ISP ip address and DNS server address are 0.0.0.0, then dsd-150 will not connect to bsecure server. To solve this problem, power down your router, dsd-150, then power up dsd-150, wait about 20 seconds, power up your router. This is to make sure you dsd-150 get the ISP provided ip address and DNS address dynamically assigned to you by your ISP. Bsecure provide a web site: www.filtertestpage.com where you can test whether dsd-150 can connect to bsecure server.

4 out of 5 eggsNot for the Novice

Pros: Once set up, very effective at controlling access from multiple PC's on my home network. I have 4 units that are used to provide access to ages 5 through 50. Two of the machines are older models that get somewhat loaded down when running multiple AV/Firewall/Spam blockers. This solution allowed me to protect all the systems in a somewhat efficient manner

Cons: Not intuitive, requires a knowledge of networking that exceeds the casual home user. If you happen to be have a job that requires travel and a problem develops while you are gone, Do not expect tech support to be able to talk your family through getting back on line.

Other Thoughts: After I got everything set up, I have been very satisfied with the level of control and protection provided by this product. My teenage daughter is not thrilled with the sites that have been blocked as a result but this is not a bad thing from my point of view. It allows me the opportunity to review those questionable sites and use my judgment in deciding whether to allow access or not.

4 out of 5 eggsJust the ticket for parental controls

Pros: You only need the client installed for antivirus, popup blocker and to use profiles. Most of the features work without the client. Works with Firefox and Mac. The 4 computer rule only applies to the client installation. Otherwise there doesn't seem to be a limit (I have six computers on my network).

Cons: The only feature that I think is missing is the ability to engage parental controls using MAC addresses. Depending on how irritating the site blocking is, I may just set up a separate wifi network for the adults and use the new router as switch to combine the two networks. I'm just assuming if I DMZ the DSD-150 that it will work fine behind the other router.

Other Thoughts: Some problems with setup that I eventually got figured out. I wrote a pretty lengthy comment on a PC Mag security watch blog that deals with the DSD-150. Here are some snippets from that comment.

There were some problems on installation. I turned everything off and installed the device. I powered everything on, the lights came on and I was surfing the internet just like normal; obviously a problem.

The device needs to be activated before you can use it and the activation screen is supposed to pop up the first time you try to access the web. In my case nothing happen.

I looked up the IP for the device (192.168.229.61) and used my browser to go there. I accessed the device and the status page. Noted the old 1.0 firmware so I downloaded the latest version and re-flashed the device. I powered everything off and turn it all back on in this order: DSD-150, DSL Modem and router. This time it worked.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed....

Pros: Easy (remote) control access, activity logs, easy set-up. complete security package.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Had a small problem at install, called support and found there had been several firmware upgrades beyond my version. They helped me up-grade and everything else went very, very easy. Highly recomended for any home network.

1 out of 5 eggsMiserable

Pros: Powerful account controls, strong value AV, Spyware, Firewall

Cons: The product just does not work "out of the box". It takes too much time to troubleshoot and technical support is terrible

Other Thoughts: Great idea. Terrible execution. I hope there is a version two of this product where numerous defects can be addressed. D-LINK also needs to get serious about supporting this product. By far the worst support experience I have had for any product.

I had read the many cautious reviews but figured I could make this thing work. But in hindsight the effort is not worth it.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fairly well

Pros: Hardware solution. Easy to set up.
Can enable/disable the different modules independently. (ie: AV, popup control, parental controls, logging, etc) Can set up profiles for entire network, individual computers or even each user login. Very handy when dealing with 4 different computers and 5 different users. Admin password override for blocked sites.

Cons: Requires thin client on each PC you want to "protect". There are a few annoying things like when the client "loses" its connection to the device and has to be reauthenticated. Nothing majorly difficult though.

Other Thoughts: I got this almost exclusively for the parental control feature. For this it works extremely well. Am satisfied overall with the purchase. I may change my mind in 10 months when I have to renew my subscription. I don't know what they will charge.

4 out of 5 eggsNo Vista Support

Pros: Tried so many software based filters and was disappointed. Does the job, so long as you are not running Vista.

Cons: No Vista support. DLink says it is "coming soon". They have been saying this since March 2007.

5 out of 5 eggsD-Link SecureSpot DSD-150

Pros: I have had this device for a week and I love it! I have a 16 year old , 7 year old and 3 year old (all boys) at home each with their own computer. The ability to customize each computer's protection is priceless!! I have an 8 computer network with wried and wireless coverage. I have this installed on the kid's PC's and mine for admin purposes. The web based control is very useful since we do travel. The other PC's are password protected and the filtering for those is perfect. I used the "Live" customer service today and they stayed online with me for almost an hour resolving my issue. They even installed software I was having trouble with just to test it!! This is what customer service should be!

Cons: The only thing I would like to see added to the reporting functionality is an alert of some kind, either by email or just an entry in the daily report that the device was unplugged from the network (date, time, duration)so I would know if my teenager bypassed it. Even customer service submitted that for review!

Other Thoughts: This device is well worth the price tag. Anyone with filtering/security concerns and several PC's on a network need to strongly consider this product. I had no problems like the ones mentioned above.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: Owned it 11 months. Very pleased with the product. I don't think it is advertized enough, though. We use it to protect 4 home PC's. 1 of which is a Linux machine. All has worked flwaelesly and the kids have been protected well from any bad web content. The content filter is made by the wonderful BSafe Online people. The firewall is awesome and I have tested it from firewall test sites and it has blocked everything.

Cons: The virus protection portion is now by McAffee. I am not a fan of that vendor, so I just don't load the vendor client and use my own antivirus (Avast! its the best!) on the PC's. So it has that flexibility, which is awesome!

Other Thoughts: Highly recommend this for home protection. Not only content protection, but firewall protection.

2 out of 5 eggsGood concept, poor execution

Pros: Good concept device.

Cons: Setup is not very intuitive. I have DSL with PPPoE. Shipping firmware (v1.00) doesn't work with PPPoE. There is a fix (firmware v1.02) but to access the admin console to do the upgrade, the unit requires an internet connection. So it's a catch 22. Can't get an internet connection with this units base firmware, but need to have an internet connection to do the upgrade ?!?! Had to terminate the PPPoE on the modem to work around this.

I only needed the parental control feature of this unit and it didn't work very well. It doesn't allow you to set up profiles based on the computer (MAC address) without installing the thin client software. The default method is all users have the same rights.

Dlink support was terrible. They hardly know the basics on how to use this. Bsecure support was better but it's a new product and even they weren't sure about certain features.

Other Thoughts: Vonage call quality is unacceptable with this unit. Vonage requires certain ports to be open including ports between 10000 and 20000. This device allows you to include individual ports but not full port ranges. Even with the firewall turned off, quality was still not acceptable.

It's a new product and I'm sure they'll eventually work around these issues.

2 out of 5 eggsWait, don't be a beta tester

Pros: When it works, it works. But that would only be a day or two at a time.
When the bugs are fixed it should be pretty cool.

Cons: was mainly interested in the parental controls, there is little explanation of what the categories are, so it was sort of a trial and error process Each time I changed something, I have to reset the device which set off a chain reaction of performance problems. Interent speed would tank and it was difficult to get back to the adminstation page. I spent maybe 20 hours so far getting this to work the way I want unsuccessfully, it is now disconnected waiting for the next version of software.

Other Thoughts: I also have a DLINK DGL4300 router which they have now added similar features to, I am wondering why I bought SecureSpot now.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive!

Pros: Simply put, this product does what it is designed to do and does it very well.
The basic setup is simple but don't let that fool you; there are features I have yet to implement (I have only had it for less than 24 hours).
I recommend this solution to anyone that wants to take control of the internet back. My 14 year old son recently was a victim of a "P-storm". He is a devout Christian boy and was very concerned of what he had seen; though only seconds on the screen he won't forget for a long time.
I tested Securespot on his computer this morning (10/18/06) and though I cannot say that this product is 100% effective it is 99.9%. I am certain he will not be subject to another incident like before again.
On top of the internet site control, this product also does the other stuff that takes 3

Cons: This is not really a con, just a heads up:
Plan your installation time. The learning curve for all of the features may take a little while.

Other Thoughts: If your kids have access to the internet without 100% parental supervision - BUY THIS NOW!

2 out of 5 eggsNot there yet

Pros: Convenience – One product that is suppose to cover all the security bases. Also offloads some of the computing to the Securespot box, which is great for older hardware.

Cons: Limited AV capabilities. Limited to no security coverage once a computer is moved off the internal network (for example, a laptop used for business travel).

Other Thoughts: I used this for a couple of months, and just couldn’t get comfortable that I was really being protected. There are no kids in the house, so the content filtering and blocking was of no value. I never had it block any spam, and the pop-up blocker is of dubious value. There is a lot of work to do on this product before it is as good as a lot of the free or less expensive software solutions out there.

Meanwhile, I decided to move on and try Microsoft One-Care for 90 days.

4 out of 5 eggsNetwork Security Solution!!!

Pros: The magic box is a DSD-150 device from D-Link. It is an internet protection box that provides spam, AV, Spyware, ADWare, and more, in onc small package. At first I was skeptical that the cigarette box sized gadget could do anything when I got it. I was expecting a router sized device, seems “size really does not matter in this case”. It is small, really the size of a Canadian cigarette box ( they have 25 smokes not 20) so it is a little wider than the US version.

The first 3 days, I wanted to pack it up and send it back. It is designed to sit between your Cable/DSL Terminal Adapter (also know as a modem but mis-named and irritates me off. Modems take analog signals and convert them to digital, Terminal Adapters are all digital as is this device and all cable “modems” and DSL “modems”, ok enough of that.) The support from D-Link needs some help! They don't know what is up with this product and should, it is too good to leave to first level support!

Cons: When I finally got to level 3 of support, things changed. I was treated well and they knew what they were talking about. From there is went almost smoothly, I have fixed IP addressing and the default assumes PPPoE. If you have PPPoE it will install and work perfectly, if not, call support.

This gizmo provides, parental control, spam blocking, popup blocking, AV (Anti-Virus) and other features that are great. If you have more than one computer in your home network, it is a deal. It supports up to 4 computers for its about $100 price and you can add up to 10.

5 out of 5 eggsDLINK Securespot ROCKS!

Pros: : The Virus Protection software is up and running on all (4) systems and they are all updated regularly with little to no personal interaction. I tend to tinkle with it manually to make sure it’s working. I’m beginning to relax now that it has proven itself. The Content Filtering is extremely powerful and yet very flexible. The options listing for the content filtering is a lot more detailed than the product that I had before. The Reporting feature is probably one of the best things about the whole product. I have the ability to login to a secure website from home or work or anywhere, and see what sites have been visited and how many times. There is also an optional limit to how many times a site can be blocked before the machine has to be rebooted. There is also a parental password override for any blocked site, so if a site is blocked you can enter the bypass password and the site will come right up. The Spam blocking seems to be working very well.

Cons: The Spyware (Immunizing) needs some work, but I’m confident that future updates will resolve these deficiencies soon.

Other Thoughts: Let me start by saying that I am a father of two very Internet savvy kids. I purchased the DLink Securespot on July 17, 2006. As of today I have had it up and running for about 4 weeks. I love it! It was easy to install and it performs as advertised. The support teams have been terrific, as I have made a few requests for future updates that they are considering. I think every responsible parent should buy this product immediately, regardless of your computer knowledge. So many families are unaware of how to actually protect their kids from the ugliness of the Internet. In many cases the kids actually know more about the computer than the parents. The DLink Securespot is a simple to use yet powerful solution for protecting your family. What a true blessing. Thank you DLink and Bsecure!

5 out of 5 eggsNifty box

Pros: Quite impressed with concept and actual installation. Does quite a bit with one box and seems to be a good deal and saves time since I have 3 PCs.

Cons: I had a problem with my Windows firewall creating a page conflict until support had me turn it off. Should be clearer on AV and Firewall removal.

Other Thoughts: Support guy told me it was Sophus AntiVirus, but had to drag it out of him. They should put that on the box.

5 out of 5 eggsOne device does it all

Pros: After years of spending hundreds of dollars and countless hours to protect my home office computers from the web, it happens. I thought it was too good to be true, until I opened up the box and plugged in this little black beauty. After the simple registration process, Parental Controls where up and running. After installing a small Thin Client on the computers AV was ready. Funny thing is it took me longer to uninstall all of the software I had installed on one computer then it took me to set up all the computers on my network. If you’re looking to save time and money on protecting your small network then this device does it all. But if you enjoy spending money and hours installing and updating your security software then stick with the other option.

Cons: Ran out of power outlets where my modem and router was located. D-Link add this to a wireless router.

Other Thoughts: After reading the other reviews about people having issues I can only suggest that you uninstall or disable any other security software to insure you don't have any conflicts.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat concept...... not yet functional

Pros: The concept is perfect, one device to protect your network...yet allows you setup individual profiles

Cons: Don't believe the Spam blocker works, Securespot has yet to detect any incoming Spam... yet my Spambully successfully traps at least 8 messages a day. Not certain that the virus protection is sufficient. To date I have failed, with DLink support, to get the thin client to work on one PC...install the cleint and bingo.. no network connection.

Other Thoughts: I hope that DLink can iron out the issues as I want to have a device like this... that works...

2 out of 5 eggsNot quite ready for prime time

Pros: Provides great content filtering for an entire home network.

Cons: Client software buggy. Web configuration interface buggy.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this product primarliy for the content filtering portion. This feature is working well for me. It filters the content for all machines on the network, even without the client software installed. The client software is a bit buggy and doesn't provide quite the equivalent of regular Antivirus, firewall, and other security software. Also, the web interface for configuring the device is buggy and requires multiple attempts at configuration.
Hopefully, updates will improve this product as time goes on. Unless you are specifically looking for network content filtering, I would wait for updates to this product before purchasing.

2 out of 5 eggsDo *not* buy this.. yet.

Pros: The idea is great. When it works, it works well.

Cons: BSecure's service behind it is very unstable. It appears they have no QA process on the software side of it at all.

Other Thoughts: The anti-virus portion of this device is practically non-existent. It only does manual and scheduled scans. Tech support promises that is being fixed, but for now this gives no real virus protection at all. Spam blocking does not work at all. Numerous problems and error messages on the config pages. While they may fix it later, right now I do not recommend this device at all.

1 out of 5 eggsPlease read

Pros: GREAT idea and concept.

Cons: Sad to say I am a HUGE D-Link fan but buyers beware with this one. The very FUNDAMENTALS of a virus scanning product would to have the ability of scanning your email. This product cannot scan your incoming email. B-Secure did contact me about the product as I had tried to get information about the email scanning part. All they did was to confirm that they have a no-return policy and suggest I check with the vendor which is NEWEGG???? Please note I am a NewEgg customer and have been for years. It is not their fault . However if they will let me I would GLADLY return it??????? I am so disappointed after waiting since the first of the year for this product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Solution for Small Networks!

Pros: I have been waiting a long time to find a solution that addresses my "digital pain" all in one product. I currently have three computers running on a small network, and the installation was a breeze. The interface is easy to navigate, and gives you a great deal of flexibility. I haven't noticed any system degradation at all. It is worth taking the time to become familiar with all of the features included, including the parenatal controls and reporting. It is also a great value! I can provide protection for ALL of the PC's on my network for $100.00 a year, AND get control over the unwanted internet content! As both a small business owner, and a parent, I find that alone is worth the money to me. Bottom line.... If you are looking for an affordable solution to address the issues of viruses, spyware, pop-ups, spam, and parental controls WITH reporting, you should give this product a GOOD LOOK!

Cons: So far, there hasn't been anything that has been a problem.

5 out of 5 eggssecurespot rocks

Pros: All in all an excellent solution to provide every aspect of Internet Security for a home network. The content filtering features of this device alone justify the purchase price. Add on to that A/V, Spam filter, anti-phishing, Intrusion Detection, Network Firewall, pop-up blocker and you can't beat this deal.

Cons: Setting up securespot to have individual profiles for PCs or Windows logons can be cumbersome. I had to call Tech Support to get it done, but now everything runs smoothly.

Other Thoughts: Usually I try to wait for the second or third generation of a product before I buy, but the feature set and ease of installation this product offers outweighs any bugs/problems I've experienced.

2 out of 5 eggsWait for a Finished Product

Pros: Good concept, reasonable price, simple hardware setup.

Cons: Software configuration is byzantine. The web-based system is slow and buggy.

Other Thoughts: This product was announced almost six months ago and has just now been released. They should have waited longer until the software works. I'm going to do a firmware upgrade eventually, but right now I can't even get far enough into the software setup to do that!

2 out of 5 eggsNot ready for prime time

Pros: Cheap...All in one security appliance...

Cons: Software bugs...Config page slow...Not many docs...Tech support only 8-5 because few know anything about it.

Other Thoughts: Look at Sonicwall 150.
