1 out of 5 eggsGreat if you like setting it up once a month

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: When it works, it's a serviceable router with good range. It has the options you'd expect from a mid to low range router.

Cons: I honestly hate this router. I bought it on sale and listened to newegg's "customer choice award winner" tag. With over 2k reviews, most of them good I had to give it a try.

First off, the USB port is useless. I'd hoped to use it for a NAS, but you can only remotely connect one machine at a time. Why you wouldn't just plug that device into the computer at that point, I'll never know, but it's useless. Second, about once a month my connection slows to a trickle and eventually shuts off. It's almost as if packets get jammed up in the thing and then it just gives up. When I reboot it, it comes right back faster than ever. Well, most times it comes right back, sometimes it comes back having lost its config and I have to start from scratch. This may be because of the third thing I hate: the reset button. The recessed reset button is right next to the hole for the power cable, and the power cable fits in the cavity just enough to press the button! Fumbling in my stereo cabinet I've pressed this stupid button way too many times.

Among the lights on the front of the unit is an infuriating globe that is blue when you have internet connection, and orange when you don't. Once in a while, just for fun, it'll turn orange for no apparent reason and stay that way until I manually go in and release the IP, then hook my laptop directly to the modem (which still has internet), hook the router back up and apply my laptop's mac to the router. No idea why this happens, but walking my wife through the procedure while she curses at me once every three months is a joy.

Other Thoughts: I am a high level computer professional with over 15 years in the industry. I have done everything from programming to networking and currently support virtual systems on four different platforms and the hardware they run on. The last thing I want to do when I go home at night is futz around with a half a**ed router. This is being replaced with an Asus and given to a friend since dd-wrt doesn't even support it.

1 out of 5 eggsDir 655 Not worth it

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Price and what is supposed to be offered

Cons: Save yourself the time, I owned 2 of these. I have tried several time to contact support and no luck, the last time they told me to upgrade my firmware - that made it worse. I have 2 separate network in 2 different states and I have the same issue - reboot, poor internet by late in the week, freezing and dropping going on.

Other Thoughts: Looking back, I should have spent a little more money to save me the time of rebooting and headache it has caused me.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDrops connection

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: 1st month did what it should

Cons: Difficult to set up. In the first month it would need resetting once a week. After that it started dropping out every other day. Now daily.

Other Thoughts: This unit was refurbished. I bought it for the great reviews and to get gigabit LAN. Should have known better. I believe definition of refurbish is, plug it in, it works, send it out. Just getting someone else problems. I've set up a netgear prosafe 8 port gigabit switch after my Westell 6100 dsl modem/router. Solid wired reliability for desktops. For laptop other devices needing wireless connection, I used a netgear wireless router that I had with DHCP disabled and connected it to the switch LAN to LAN for wireless access point.

Manufacturer Response:

We thank you for the feedback as we really do appreciate the input and are sorry to hear that you were experiencing issues with the DIR-655. We suggest that you download and install the latest firmware version to solve your problem. If that does not work please contact D-Link technical support for further troubleshooting. You can contact them at www.support.dlink.com or by calling 1-877-453-5465. We hope your issue gets resolved soon and thank you for choosing D-Link.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat potential but poor performance

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Price point, features, ease of use.

Cons: Consistently dropped wireless signal, wireless signal speed poor even when the router was no less than 4 feet away.

Other Thoughts: This unit worked well for one month and then it was constant resets. I should of rma'd it as soon as I received it. Picked up a medialink and it functions flawlessly.

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for the feedback as we really do appreciate the input. We are sorry to hear that you were experiencing connection problems with the DIR-655. Please make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest firmware. If that does not solve the issue please contact D-Link technical support at www.support.dlink.com for further assistance. 4 out of 5 eggsGood, not amazing

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Speed, moderate range, slim design, user interface allows for good customization

Cons: intermittent signal drop, intermittent lag/bogging, challenging "access control" features require you to create schedules which are "block" times instead of "allow" times. Meaning, if you want the kids to play from 4pm to 6pm you have to block the other 22 hours of the day instead of simply "allowing" those 2 hours.

Other Thoughts: In all, we've had this for almost 2 years and we actually like it alot. It's great for running almost a dozen devices at once (iPad, iPhone, iPod, xBox, laptop...) and the range is acceptable from inside the house. It drops off considerably if we're out on the back deck (25' away from router) and there are issues with scheduling/logging and intermittent signal drop but in general it's a great router for the price.

4 out of 5 eggsOut of the box

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: I was replacing a belkin wireless router with this product. It was up and running out of the box in less then 10 min. Would have been less if I hadn't forgotten the order of bringing the network online :)

Cons: color is the only thing I can think to complain about :D

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible router

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Works for a week if lucky.

Cons: Owned the router since late 2012. Six months in, the router starts having connectivity issues; dropped connections to wireless and wired devices, or would maintain connectivity to wireless and wired devices, but would lose connectivity to the modem.

Upgraded firmware and issues seemed to be slightly alleviated. Fast-forward to late 2013/early 2014 and the router has to be restarted at least once a week in order to restore connectivity to the modem. I've tried everything, disabling most services, disabling security, turning off SSID broadcasting, restoring to factory several times, disabling port-forwarding rules, and NOTHING has made any improvement.

The only reason I bought this router was because of all the reviews I read on NewEgg; sadly, I've learned that high numbers of positive reviews don't always reflect a good product.

My guess is that the newer versions of this monstrosity of a router are the ones with all the issues. The older versions must be the ones getting all the five egg reviews.

I'm leaving D-Link and going to try out Asus instead. If you're considering buying this piece of junk, I highly recommend reading all the one and two egg reviews before you do; you'll see why it'd be a poor investment.

Other Thoughts: Avoid like the plague, unless you can find the original/first version.

1 out of 5 eggsLiars

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: it routes

Cons: I used this with the DWA-552. This is the card it reccomends to use with this router. Max speed is 130mbps. 300 is an absolute lie.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Trick Of using D-Link stuff

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: D-Link equipment works great when you have a total D-Link network
It Works better than average when its ALL D-link
Better than average means BETTER THAN MOST

Cons: Don't mix your network. If you have a Netgear router you should only hook netgear peripherals to it.

THIS IS A CARDINAL RULE WITH D-LINK.

After fighting this stuff for 20 years I have learned......JUST DONT DO IT................

Other Thoughts: You May just avoid a headache...........and who wants that

1 out of 5 eggsHas to be the worst!

This review is from: D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Allows you to browse the web

Wireless seemed to work fine.

Cons: 0. Installed latest firmware.

1. non-standard NAT -- This HAS to be the worst router I've ever used!! TCP/UDP NAT does not work in a standard way. I ended up swapping it out with an Asus and my life was normal again.

2. MAC address table is not always correct
3. NAT connection table doesn't show all NAT connections
4. I probably could have found more, but chucked it after I discovered NAT was broken.
