1 out of 5 eggsPiece of junk

Pros: Free

Cons: Very slow download speed. 67Mbps coming from Modem, 8Mbps coming out of router! Tried updating firmware to no avail.

Other Thoughts: Free with my new Modem... cost me $50 in service fees from Comcast.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: None...except it was free with the purchase of a new cable modem.

Cons: Horrible wireless coverage.
Terrible packet handling through internet. Delays in handshakes and just pulling up simple websites.

1 out of 5 eggsVersion B1

Pros: Cheap. Works... sorta

Cons: Version B1 is not supported by DD-WRT or OpenWRT. Without third party firmware the signal is poor and devices constantly disconnect and reconnect. Throughput is very poor.

Other Thoughts: If you can get Version A1 of this router, get it and install DD-WRT and you'll have an awesome router. If you have version B1 you might as well through it in the trash. You'll save yourself a lot of frustration.

2 out of 5 eggsIt is a wireless router

Pros: It is a free decent router that I hope I never need to use. Ie, it is a backup for the regular router. When Cisco routers work they for the most part work exceptionally other than random disconnects. Cisco Linksys routers are supposed to be really good from what I hear.

Cons: I have had issues with Cisco routers in the past. They seem to only last 2 years. There customer service is the worst I have ever experienced. Darn things disconnect randomly for no reason. The next time my router dies I will use this router long enough to get a different brand.

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't have a lot of range

Pros: It works. I mean it's a router.

Cons: It doesn't have a ton of range. If you are around 30+ft away or around a solid corner, you will lose a lot of your signal strength. Just a heads up.

1 out of 5 eggsThe router is a not good at all.

Pros: nothing

Cons: very bad coverage
signal is weak
disconnects very frequently

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and value it greatly. We are sorry to hear that you are having coverage issues and that your DIR-601 drops connection frequently. If you haven’t yet, make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest firmware (1.04B02). Also make sure you keep the number of walls and ceilings between the D-Link router and other network devices to a minimum. In addition, move the router away any metal objects that can obstruct the electromagnetic signal. If you are still having connection issues please feel free to contact D-Link technical support at www.dlink.com/support. We thank you for choosing D-Link.
