1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy This

Pros: Cannot evaluate. Does not run long enough.

Cons: Beat-up out of the box. Looks like it was in a war. Said to self, we will give it a try. Big mistake. Will not operate on line for more than a few hours, then it resets and cannot find the internet. On line docs say (lamp Colors) say it has failed to reset after timeout. (Or some such trash) The first error I made is to buy refurb. The second is it's D-Link. (Not much good luck with the brand)

3 out of 5 eggsCurrent model beta firmware a must

Pros: cheap
small
standard D-Link interface
dns relay can be disabled
works properly with beta 2.03 firmware

Cons: 5ghz unusable on release firmware
fixed antennas

Other Thoughts: I configured one of these which a client owned today. I had previously updated it to firmware 2.02 and tuned its channel cfg from a more remote location in the install area. 5GHz was basically unusable which I assumed was due to its distance and small fixed antennas, but after relocating the device within ~10 feet of my install area I quickly determined the firmware was actually the problem so I finally relented and installed the beta 2.03 firmware. The router had been stable with proper channel tuning using inSSIDer and 20mhz band use plus dns relay / proxy disabled, my usual method of wireless router tuning.

D-Link should call firmware 2.03 non-beta as the device doesn't function to its basic specs without it, and its beta status will keep many users from attempting to use it. The router works nicely once tuned with 2.03, but I would consider anything below 2.03 unusable with 5GHz connections. Pretty sad D-Link, since 2.02 was released a year ago. I haven't worked with the earlier 1.xx firmware on the older hardware revision to comment on it for comparison.

1 out of 5 eggsCustomer Service

Pros: When it works it's OK.

Cons: Power supply / switch failed after 3 months. Contacted D-Link by phone but they hung up on me and did not return the call. Emailed customer service to ask for a RMA but their reply was you have to phone in for a RMA. Going round and round in a circle for something which should be a simple RMA request - the power to the unit has failed!

1 out of 5 eggs2nd one - same issues

Pros: Easy setup

Cons: Absolutely no internet from 5ghz. Sounds like other people have this issue. This was "free" with the Motorola SB6141. I had to RMA the first one because I couldn't get out to the internet on the 5ghz wireless. 2.4 worked fine. Same issue with the replacement. Not impressed at all. Upgraded firmware from the Canada site to firmware 2.0.2 http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-815

No change. I've gotten limited connectivity on my wireless a few times. Never had an issue with my Linksys WRT54GS. I would have kept that one, by my Internet speeds are capped by wireless-g. I will be looking around for a reliable N router. This one is junk.

1 out of 5 eggsD.O.A

Pros: Didn't get a chance to see any pros.

Cons: Everything.

Other Thoughts: This router was DOA, I got this router free with the purchase of a Motorola Cable modem. Got my modem setup and then proceded to install this router, opended the box, pulled router out and then plugged into power outlet. Power came on and within 6 secs went off and the unit would never come on again. DOA - sent in for RMA.

1 out of 5 eggsWorthless

Pros: Cheap

Cons: It took about 30min to install this product and several repeated attempts to configure it. It worked, with limited range for a few hours and then it stopped. I rebooted it several times before finally giving up and removing it. I went back to my D-Link 615 for more reliable connections and better range. Very disappointed.

1 out of 5 eggsNo wonder they're giving this away free

Pros: The management interface is familiar? That's about it.

Cons: 5 gHz band simply will NOT connect to the internet. 2 gHz band works ok, until the unit needs a reboot. Which is "frequently". Will try RMA, but not optimistic.

Other Thoughts: No wonder they're giving this away for free (with purchase of a Motorola Surfboard cable modem). Not worth the headache, though, even if free. Avoid this unit.

5 out of 5 eggsDual Band Wireless

Pros: Blazing fast network for a small home. Stream full 1080p without lag.

Cons: 5GHz is a small signal area. You have to be close to the router to get no lag with 1080p. If you have a large home I would not recommend.

Other Thoughts: Since no usb wireless adapter supports Windows 8 yet. The only way to stream from my new Windows 8 laptop to my network player in dual band wireless is through an access point or a router setup as an access point. I will use this router as a daisy chain/access port. It extends the wireless signal and lets you stream in dual band using Windows 8.
