2 out of 5 eggsNot an upgrade

Pros: It works, it was cheap, has gigabit ethernet.

Cons: The wifi range leaves a lot to be desired. My old G router I have in my basement has better signal throughout my house than this N router has just two rooms over. Also, even though I have it set for mixed G/N use, I can't get my G laptop to connect, but my tablet works fine switching from one to the other.

Other Thoughts: I have the DIR-651 set up as a second wifi access point connected to my home network through gigabit ethernet. It does what I need it to do but was hoping for better. Even though it says it's capable of 300mbps, I could only get it to connect at 130mbps to any device. Better than G speeds but not even close to spec, and that's in the same room. Signal coverage is horrible despite two antennas. Would return it but not worth the return costs, only paid $20 for it.

3 out of 5 eggsD-Link DIR-651 Review

Pros: Wireless N, Gigabit Networking allows for faster network transfer speed of files/folders over 500MB. Smaller and uses less electricity compared to my older WRT54G. Standard complement of settings to be expected from an N generation router.

Cons: Setup for gamers/hobbyists/professional users can be a hassle since the manual provides little in the way of detail or even good definition of features. You will turn to the manual for help when the router, even with the latest firmware the router will still have problems.

Other Thoughts: Many people report having all sorts of internet slow downs, connectivity issues, etc.
I keep a secure network (no SSID broadcast, wpa2 + tkip, etc etc. With few new devices being connected to my router, I was able to create a DHCP reservation list under the manual setup/network settings page "inside" the router. This seems to have corrected the apparent issues I encountered with slow web-browsing on devices on the reserved list.

2 out of 5 eggswas not an upgrade

Pros: it worked, could easily set admin password, SSID, encryption

Cons: advertised application for large home, supposedly faster and with wider coverage, did not perform as well as 5 year old Linksys G router/access point

Other Thoughts: went back to store

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, Cheap, Tiny, Gigabit router after firmware update

Pros: I have had no problems with video Skype, torrents, or gaming. This router paired with my unrestricted 200Mbs fiber connection from my ISP equals super smooth and fast connections. I can now transfer 20GBs files in minutes over my wired network and the wireless coverage is so wide and fast. I can't believe I got all this for less then $60 and in such a small package.

Cons: Open WRT and DD-WRT don't work yet. There are a lot of settings and option in the setup menu and it can be a bit confusing because D-Link uses different terms and words for functions that all the other companies seem to use common tech terms for.

Other Thoughts: My DIR-651 came installed with 1.00 but after reading many reviews and forums about the problems the router had and the fact that firmware 1.10 fix the problems I installed it and it is great. People having internet problems after the 1.10 firmware update might be restricted by ISP limitations.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: None to speak of - would say low price - but the quality is lower so that is not a pro

Cons: Everything - drops connections - lack of features. I am in a deployed environment, so internet connectivity is already slow - doesnt help when the router sucks.

Other Thoughts: all around worst router I have owned...

4 out of 5 eggsits ok

Pros: This router is OK. I was looking for a cheap gigabit solution and this is what the local store had. I was in back and forth between this one and a buffalo ($15 bucks more) but this one does its job

Cons: Without the firmware, you will get all the problems from previous users. It was recently updated and the updates do their work..otherwise prepare for disconnection issues as well as not saving the settings after a reboot. No DDWRT support.

1 out of 5 eggsThe reviews are correct.

Pros: Small, simple design. Gigabit LAN. No overly-bright obnoxious looking lights like with other routers. Price.

Cons: 1. Devices connected via wi-fi will lose connection and subsequently, are unable to reconnect automatically because the router has a problem issuing IP addresses. Rebooting the router fixes the problem temporarily but it has to be done at least daily...sometimes multiple times per day. The only way I've found to resolve the problem is to issue static IP addresses to each device but that's impractical for me.

2. Wi-Fi range is mediocre.

3. Browser setup interface is "clunky", awkward and anytime a setting is changed, the router takes 60-75 seconds to save the setting before you're able to continue making any other changes.

Other Thoughts: I've owned and setup several different wireless routers from various manufacturers (including D-Link) over the past 15-20 years. This router is by far, the worse I've experienced.

I could have dealt with the mediocre wi-fi range and the awkward user interface and been satisfied with the router but the wi-fi connection issues were downright frustrating.

With previous wireless routers, I was accustomed to just picking up whatever device I wanted to use (smartphone, laptop, tablet, etc.) and being able to connect to the internet instantaneously. That convenience came to a screeching halt with the DIR-651.

I figured that since it had comparatively few reviews, the bad reviews must have been due to user error. Not so! This is just a bad router and updating the firmware to the latest version didn't help at all.

I've never before felt compelled to post a negative review about a product but the DIR-651 makes it easy.

3 out of 5 eggsneeded some fixing

Pros: firmware update ( came out in August or July IIRC) on this router fixes the horrible problems that everyone seems to be having. It now works as any router should.

Cons: when first purchased this router was junk: Wouldn't keep settings; more than 3 devices connected to the network would cause the router to have a meltdown; range is mediocre at best.

As stated before d-link customer service is terribad! Not one of the "techs" I talked to even mentioned a firmware update. They just had me do hard/soft resets and check settings...LOL 'cause I hadn't tried that.

Other Thoughts: I got this on clearance from another retailer so I couldn't return it. This was my first d-link product and I have to say I'm not a satisfied customer nor will I be a returning one...Not impressed.

I gave this thing 3 eggs due to the fact that it now works just fine. It would have gotten a fine review from me had the router came with working firmware and I didn't have to experience d-links "customer service."

1 out of 5 eggsDon't even think about it!

Pros: It was not defective.

Cons: I got this thinking a new router would be much better than the 5-year old Linksys I had that died of old age. Turns out it was much WORSE. It constantly dropped connection and it could not handle watching streaming video and playing xbox with its supposedly faster LAN ports. Sometimes, it would just not give internet to devices, even if they could connect to it. The only way to fix that was to reset the router. I was resetting it 4-5 times a day!

Other Thoughts: The support was TERRIBLE. First call didn’t fix anything. Second call actually left me unable to connect with any computer or phone. Third call was also useless. They basically told me to just take it back. I’ve never seen worse Technical support. They don’t seem to care about the poor quality of their product. I ended up taking their advice and returning it in less than 2 weeks.

Do yourself a favor and skip this device and anything from D-Link. They don’t deserve our business.

1 out of 5 eggsD-link DIR-651

Pros: small and I think cheap

Cons: poor G band signal even in same room. We went from a Linksys WRT54G router and had pretty good recpetion throughout the house and no loss of internet when using our Panisonic cordless phone. Now, we get a marginal signal even 12 feet away, through the air in the same room. It drops out pretty frequently.
