3 out of 5 eggsSolid router but coverage not improved

Pros: Appearance
Web set-up and management application
Networking features

Cons: Did not remove weak/unreliable spots from the house as I hoped.
Coverage area smaller than previous router (DIR-655) positioned in same location.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this for ~$20 on a crazy sale when my other router (DIR-655) started to show signs of failure. I had a weak spot in my upstairs that i was hoping this "smart beam" router would fix. Unfortunately it did not. In truth, the weak spot is now a dead zone and coverage is unreliable in an adjacent room that did not previously have an issue.

Can't speak to service life, but other than the over promising and under delivering on the coverage range the router is fine. I would recommend this if you can pick it up for cheap but do not expect coverage range to improve.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of junk

Pros: None

Cons: Drops connection every few mins.
Claims whole house range. But I do not get adequate signal even in a room two walls apart.
Do not buy this.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback and we want to thank you for your input. We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing connection difficulties with the DIR-645. Please make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest firmware (1.04B11). Also, you want to keep the number of walls and ceilings in between your device and router to a minimum. In addition, keep your product away from any materials that can negatively affect wireless performance such as glass, metal, brick, insulation, concrete and water. If your connection problems persist perhaps D-Link technical support can solve the issue. Contact them at www.support.dlink.com. We thank you for being a D-Link customer.

4 out of 5 eggspretty good for price

Pros: I can say that this is what it is, a wireless router with gb ports. DONT EXPECT TOO MUCH from this. You get what you pay for, if you want nicer options and better craftsmanship get an asus for $70+ I use both the wifi and wired ports and coverage is OK, the gb ports are as stated speeds. Very light weight.

Cons: The interface is very confusing, i spent 10 min just trying where to find how to update the firmware. Poor QC, my usb port came bent up out of the box, so you cant stick anything in it without probably voiding the warranty. I am ok since I only want this for this and that. The shape is odd, but who cares gig ports and decent wifi range.

Other Thoughts: just needed this for my small office so I can patch machines here and there. Works fine, I updated firmware right away and it hasn't had a problem so far.

1 out of 5 eggsI thought D-Link was supposed to make good products?

Pros: Got it on sale.

Cons: -WiFi and Ethernet connections are disconnected A LOT.
-Can't seem to handle more than 1 device
-It apparently forgot the password to the admin account on the gateway

Other Thoughts: I'm extremely disappointed at D-Link, I thought giving them a second chance would be okay, I guess they don't want my business. :/

I'll just go find a Cisco router, from my experience, have worked 3x better than D-Link.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsRough start, but seems OK now

Pros: Looks nice
Easy Initial Setup
Seems to be working fine now

Cons: Essentially didn't work for the first few hours I had it. I upgraded the firmware immediately to the newest version based on the review feedback I had seen in this thread. After a lot of hassling with options/etc and restarting it I finally seem to have wrangled it into working. What I actually think happened at this point is it auto-configured to use a wireless channel that is super saturated in my condo complex. After those first few hours of fiddling with it it has been totally fine and has good wireless strength.

Other Thoughts: Still not entirely sure if it's a great router, but I got it extremely cheap so as long as it works I think I will be pretty happy with it.

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for your feedback as we really do appreciate the value and input. We apologize for the difficulties you encountered but glad to hear that the DIR-645 is working for you. Please note that anytime you experience any difficulties you can contact our technical support team at www.support.dlink.com. An agent will assist you in resolving any problems you have. Our support website is also equipped with information that is designed to enhance the user's experience. You can find firmware upgrades, the user manual, FAQ's, and tutorials. We thank you for choosing D-Link.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Pros: Worked great for the first day I had it.

Cons: Cons: Manually set up the unit (as per most routers). Came home the next day and the wireless stopped working. I figured a simple power cycle would fix it. Power cycled the unit using the front power button (power off - 10 sec - power on). Only power LED came on after that, and have not had any other lights since. After this, my ISP recognized a new MAC address, my PC's MAC address. Seems like the unit is forwarding all information from my computer instead of acting like a router. Tried both DHCP and manually setting computer's IP address, still could not connect to 192.168.0.1 or http://dlinkhost. Tried various factor reset schemes (including what's listed in the documentation multiple times), unit still passes forward all networking information to my modem. Tried another PC to completely isolate it to the router. Still broken. Found an emergency flashing guide on dlink's forums (topic 58080.0 if it helps anyone); unit would not even respond to this. This is the second Dlink router that I've had issues with. Not very pleased.

Other Thoughts: I copied and pasted someone else's review, because I had the exact same problem and could not find anyway to fix. D-Link support webpage was worthless, many links did nothing.

5 out of 5 eggsDIR-645 Whole Home Router 1000

Pros: Works as advertised, the signal goes through to upstairs bedrooms. Physical setup was simple, popped the Ethernet cables from my old (very old) Linksys hub and computers and put them into the DIR-645. This was an extremely inexpensive router and a dire upgrade.

Cons: It was difficult for me to set up the router because the install disc is pretty much garbage. The disc would not install on my computer and I had to manually setup my internet connection before it would even work using http://192.168.0.1/setup.php.

Afterwards, to set up the wireless connection, I had to go through manual because none of the wizards were working for me. Thankfully, I had my boyfriend on the phone, because there is no way I was going to do any of that by myself.

Other Thoughts: After a few minutes of going through every single wizard and finding out they were not going to work. I finally had to use the manual setup for my Internet and Wireless Internet connections, which wasn't that painful because I had assistance at that point. If you know more than I do (nothing) about setting up a router, you would probably have a simple and easy setup time with this product.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked great... For one day.

Pros: Worked great for the first day I had it. Shareport worked well (for the time I had to test it). QoS seemed decent.

Power cycled the unit using the front power button (power off - 10 sec - power on). Only power LED came on after that, and have not had any other lights since. 5 out of 5 eggsGood router, good price

Pros: Solid router, blazing fast gigabit ethernet, good coverage over my entire house. I thought I was going to have to have two routers to cover the house, but this one reaches to every corner with solid speeds.

Firmware is also pretty good with plenty of tweaks available.

Cons: It is shaped like a can. I can't decide if I like that or not, but it certainly doesn't look like your typical router.

Other Thoughts: Can't beat the price for a gigabit router. I just had two, count 'em, two Belkin routers brick on me. Won't be buying that brand again. Replaced them with these. So far so good. Don't let me down, D-Link.
