4 out of 5 eggsDecent, affordable router

Pros: Easy setup, fast, affordable. Lots of features, highly configurable. I really like the shape and design. Great for small home networks that don't require anything special.

Cons: There are definitely more powerful routers out there, but it's hard to find one that offers similar features at this price. Other than the weird login issue (see below) I haven't had any issues with this router.

Other Thoughts: Not sure if this was a bug, but for some reason I was unable to log into the router admin page with any browser other than Internet explorer. Regardless of how many times I factory reset it, the page kept telling me "wrong password" when using Chrome or Opera. With IE however, logging in and changing the password worked fine.

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable firmware

Pros: Nice modern design; lot of features.

Cons: Unreliable, low quality firmware. Maybe too many features, but system logs do not provide any useful information, such as DHCP lease assignments, WPA key exchanges/updates. When rebooted, wireless guest enabled without security, even though configuration disabled quest -- and had enabled security when guest was enabled.

Other Thoughts: Have older D-Link which I really like, so very disappointed with this one. D-Link support web site has no discernible way to request some common sense firmware enhancements, or even simple corrections.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks excellent, solved signal issues.

Pros: Strong signal and fast speeds even in the concrete basement, fixed all my sigal issues. Cloud services work and are revolutionary. Power button instead of having to unplug. Can plug a flash drive or hard drive into USB port and access over the internet browser. IPAD/IPHONE and Android apps work great. Easy to setup. Better than Linksys.

Cons: Cannot hang on wall. Need to purchase a Sharecenter to gain complete cloud advantages, misleading cloud advertising. Somewhat bulky, but I belive this is how they get their excellent signal. Power cord could be longer. Disadvantages not significant enough to drop to 4 eggs.

Other Thoughts: Will expand on this system with Sharecenter for my own personal cloud, helps me not rely on third parties to hold my data. Thanks for the option, D-Link! Longer cord only needed if hanging on the wall, but with the excellent signal strength I don't need to hang it on the wall.

1 out of 5 eggsUSB storage doesn't work

Pros: Good solid Wireless Router

Cons: The advised "media cloud storage" doesn't really work for PC users. You are pretty much forced to use android app for this, so only your phone and tablet can access this.

Other Thoughts: They should be clear about how it is advertised.

3 out of 5 eggsit works...

Pros: The router is fast with a Gigabit switch and has decent coverage. There are some nice features like dynamic dns and guest networks. The router also looks nice and does not stand out on my desk. (which is nice, I guess)

Cons: The software running on the router seems to be sub par. My biggest issue that that I have to restart the router every couple of days or else I cannot log into its control panel. Also the admin software does not always save my changes. I have tried to assign specific IP addresses to MAC addresses found on the network, but when I click save and navigate back to the page, none of my changes are present. It also tries to over simplify things and in the process make it very difficult to use. The router does still function, but you cant even get to the login screen until you reboot it.

Other Thoughts: I am still questioning the true network coverage. While I do get signal all over my apartment, the speeds are rather slow. (10 ft away and only 2 Mbs copies between computers) It does work and I suspect things will improve with software upgrades, so I will keep it, but it was disappointing to say the least.

1 out of 5 eggsDecent, but misleading specs and poor advertising

Pros: It's fast. Once I figured out the setup, configuration was easy. Lots of options in the (very confusing) setup menu. Strong wireless throughout the house. Power button on the back is a nice improvement over power-cycling by pulling the plug. The unit is very lightweight - not necessarily a pro, but plan for that. The cables want to tip it over. It's about as tall as my hand.

Cons: 1st, it's not a USB connection as advertised, it's an ethernet jack.

2nd, the manual, quickstart guide, and setup wizard do not agree with each other. The light color scheme is non standard, and if you are used to other routers setup is not intuitive. Download the manual from the D-Link website first.

3rd - I would give 0 eggs for this if I could. The mydlink service does not work as advertised - either very poorly designed, or an outright lie, and that's the gimmick to buy this router. The web portal only recognizes the router half the time, even though I know it's up. The apps DO NOT let me see my network, and the mydlink.com website forces me to the mobile site...which only links to the app. This probably works with cameras, but it does not give network monitoring as promised. There are several DLink websites giving conflicting information. Installation asks for a CD that does not come with the product, and the download page does not give any software.

Other Thoughts: I probably won't return it, since it is functioning nicely. Wireless seems to be strong through the whole house. However, knowing what I do now, I would not purchase it or recommend it. This is not the 90's, and D-Link is not a third rate company. If they are going to release a product with fancy features in a consumer grade product, they need to make it user friendly. This is not a new market. If I had not purchased it on sale, there are several other cheaper routers to go with.
