5 out of 5 eggsYep - It worked!

Pros: Worked well as advertised. Rarely had to reboot this WAP.

Cons: It did not magically change itself into a newer, faster device.

Other Thoughts: Yep. I'd buy again. I gave it away after I upgraded.

1 out of 5 eggsCrashes my network every couple days!

Pros: Price

Cons: Crashes my network every couple of days. It worked great initially for about a week, then my whole network went down, by process of elimination after replacing several network cables we realized it was this AP used to cover a part of my house where the main router does not reach. I have factory reset and installed the latest firmware only to have the problem persist.
My other issue is speed, even though it says it is N and should connect at 300 Mbps, I never connect higher than 65 Mbps using devices that connect to anything else at higher speeds.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this product, pay a little more and get a good one.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We are sorry to hear that you experienced an issue with the TEW-637AP. If it fails, clients connected to it may not be able to access the network but it should not adversely affect other aspects of your network. Connections at 300Mbps is possible when operating in 40MHz channel width. If the channel space is saturated it will operate in 20MHz mode for a connection rate up to 150Mbps. Your wireless client must also be capable of these connection rates. A data throughput rate of 65 Mbps would be fairly typical from a 150 Mbps connection. If the unit itself is defective we will be more than happy to honor the warranty on it. Please email adrian@trendnet.com and we will have a support representative assist you with warranty services. Please include a link to this review.

Adrian

1 out of 5 eggsLil box O Garbage!

Pros: None...Garbage

Cons: have owned for awhile and has been nothing but problems and issues, tech support is like dealing with a 15 buck burger flipper at McDonalds. drops connection all the time, buffers all the time loses connection all the time. have updated and reset numerous times with ZIP results. Bought a new router with wi-fi and have 100% uptime and great distance. UI is garbage and fluky half the time cant even communicate with the device.

Other Thoughts: DONT WASTE YOU MONEY!

3 out of 5 eggsNot as good as the old version

Pros: Update to an update on 1/30/2014. Worked well for a time. Can't really beat the price of the unit for what you get.

Cons: Recently started to throttle my internet connection requiring a reboot of the device every 1-2 days.

Other Thoughts: Would be browsing or playing a game, when all of as sudden I could tel the speed was down. I use AT&T U-Verse, so I used their internet speed test. I have a 22mb connection. Test would show speeds as low as 1.2mb. After reboot, the 637ap, it would be fine for a another day or so.

This device worked great, but its time is over for me. I have moved on to an Asus RT-AC66U.

2 out of 5 eggsPacket loss, bad QoS

Pros: Fairly easy setup, though it requires a windows-only utlility

Cons: Multiple times per hour, there are several minutes of significant packet loss (50%+) between any device and the AP

Other Thoughts: Using 802.11n and WPA2-PSK

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Will,

If you have not done so already we recommend that you update the firmware on the unit, reset it and then reconfigure it. You can also try a different channel to see if the issue is being caused by interference on a specific channel. Placement may be an issue as well. If you have anything near the unit or your wireless client that could be causing radio frequency interference try moving it further away. If you need assistance with the unit please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter Than More Expensive Brands

Pros: Have had this WAP for over two years, I use it daily for streaming video, and I can count the amount of times I've had to mess with it on one hand -and most of those turned out to be the fault of the connecting device, not the WAP.

As for signal strength: My house has thick concrete walls, and the access point is in the far back corner, but I can get a solid signal on the other side of the house, even with a shoddy smartphone. No complaints.

I went through half a dozen Netgear and Linksys access points before this one, they were all a huge hassle; even with firmware like Tomato, they constantly needed rebooted.

My entire home network is now running on TRENDnet hardware, starting with the $40 firewall that I purchased back in 2004. Love their gear, it's rugged and affordable, never had a problem with any of it. Buy it and forget about it.

Cons: Not really a con, but, see below...

Other Thoughts: The only time that TRENDnet hardware has failed me was when I had it all stacked (router/firewall/WAP) and mixed up the power cables. They're too similar! PLEASE, TRENDNET, USE DIFFERENT PLUG SIZES FOR DIFFERENT VOLTAGES!!!

I let the smoke out of my awesome GREENnet router :(

If you have more than one TRENDnet device, mark the power cables!

1 out of 5 eggsReliability issue

Pros: Increased speed of network off verizon fios modem, while it worked, small foot print, easy to use

Cons: Failed after about 13 months. Several attempts to reset and access administrative functions through http have also failed. Like others mentioned this is effectively a paperweight now and I can't recommend trendnet products going forward. Most of these devices generally have some life expectancy but 13 months seems a bit too short..

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We are sorry to hear that you have an issue with the TEW-637AP. The access point has a 3 year warranty. Please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you with submitting an RMA request for warranty services. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little and inexpensive AP

Pros: I installed two of these in my home over 2 years ago. Small in size, two rotating antennas. Very easy to set-up. I have 4 APs through-out my house, same SSID, ensuring the SSID channels are DIFFERENT. I even scan the air and look at neighbor signals and potentially change mine as performance can be impacted. For ~$25/30 I paid for these, well worth the price. Very satisfied.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Great AP, you won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 eggsNo improvement in coverage

Pros: Inexpensive. Not too hard to set up, although the admin password thing was misleading between the quickstart and the manual (the quickstart was wrong.) Firmware update was simple. Easy to set up multiple SSIDs. Connections seem fine - nothing dropped that I've noticed.

Cons: I was hoping it would provide better coverage than my FIOS wireless router. But neither one can reach my wireless-n TV less than 50 feet away. Works fine for everything else, so it must be my TV or some interference in the house. Bummer. A waste of money but I knew that was a possible outcome of this test.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Valued Customer,

We are sorry to see that the unit isn’t providing the coverage you were looking for. Channel selection and placement could help. Try varying channels to see if that helps and try to mount your wireless hardware as high as possible and avoid enclosing them in any type of shelving. If you still do not receive a wireless signal it could be interference, the amount and type of obstructions or an issue with the TV. You may want to explore other hardware alternatives such as Powerline.
