5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great now, outperforming the TEW-731 BR it is linked to, even when accessed in the same room.

Cons: Needed update.

Other Thoughts: I delayed reviewing this because it would not work more than an hour or so. I thought it my be my fault, as I was ignorant of wireless access points and thought I had bought a router for another house. When it worked, it was no stronger than the 731 router upstairs. I had made a hole in the ceiling to wire it to the 731, so I hated to just junk it. With nothing to lose, I installed an April 2015 update and it is now providing strong, long range performance with no resets needed since.

1 out of 5 eggsCaused serious headaches

Pros: When it worked, it was great...

Cons: Set-up as a regular AP required almost daily resets. On top of that it would regularly go into "fritz mode" and so overload the switch it was attached to, that it would practically take down the entire network. I have all the latest firmware and still the problem persists. This product is absolutely unusable.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Chris,

We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing an issue with the TEW-638APB. Having to reset it daily is not normal operation. Please email adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you as soon as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

2 out of 5 eggsSave Your Money

Pros: Not hard to configure

Cons: UNRELIABLE - had to reboot daily.

Other Thoughts: I plan to return it this week. Should have looked closer at the reviews before purchasing

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Anonymous,

The TEW-638APB has several modes. If you are using it as a client or repeater please try adjusting the channel selection on the network you are connecting to. Also, try adjusting placement of the unit to ensure it is receiving a good signal and not near a source of Interference. Please also makes sure the unit has the latest firmware update installed from our website. If you continue to experience issues with the unit please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone help you as soon as possible.

Regards,

Adrian

2 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Good price. Decent web interface.

Cons: Very very slow. Even at close range with full signal.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Jared,

We are sorry to hear that you are having an issue with the TEW-638APB. Please update the access point with the latest firmware update found on our website. After the firmware update you will need to perform a factory reset finalize the process. See if you receive a better signal by trying different channels. If you have disabled the SSID broadcast on the unit, turn it back on. For 802.11n performance please make sure you are using WPA2 AES encryption levels. Placement may also help. Try to mount it as high as possible and avoid enclosing the unit in any type of shelving. If you continue to have issues please email Adrian@trendnet.com and will have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.

Adrian

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Wireless Access Point

Pros: Excellent web interface; very clear and concise on the options I'm setting, and lots of flexibility in the available options. Works well with my Asus PCE-N15 PCIe WiFi cards.

Cons: Unfortunately the TrendNET PCI WiFi cards I bought to go with this unit have crapped out within two years of use.

Other Thoughts: I gave TrendNET a chance given it's price and the fact that I never heard of of them prior, but I was contracting my IT services to local small businesses and needed something cheap to extend their wireless network. I fell in love with the interface; much better than LinkSys and doesn't require lengthy reboots like the Netgear. So I bought two for my home!

1 out of 5 eggsProblematic

Pros: price was good.

Cons: inconsistant. I purchased 3 of these with the intent of setting up 1 in my basement, 1 on the first floor, and 1 on the second floor to insure I had maximum signal strength no matter where I went in my home. I had issues from the start. I tried all kinds of configurations but they kept interfering with one another. I tried getting each one on a different channel and named each hotspot with a different name, tried putting them all on the same name and same channel and many other combos. Nothing worked. Kept losing connection.

Then i finally gave up and only set up 1 hotspot. Worked for a while and then I started having connection issues. All my devices started losing connection and then reconnecting. Over and over. So I finally swapped it out witth one of the other ones I had lying around from my previous failed attempt at using all 3 at the same time. That one worked for about 6 weeks and now it is doing the same thing as the other one. I swear the 3rd one is DOA. It never worked right at all.

Other Thoughts: I would not buy these at all unless you like endless troubleshooting and problems. This product is just terrible. makes me afraid to buy anything from them at all.

I love Newegg but this time I am disappointed in this product. I imagine these are still under warranty as the warranty is 3 years but not sure what good it would do to get a replacement as they would probably do the same thing.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Darth,
We deeply apologize for this matter. You are correct, we offer the 3 year warranty on this item and would love to help you in our hassle free return process. Please contact me directly at adrian@trendnet.com with "Newegg TEW-638APB Product Review" in the subject line and I will assist you immediately. 3 out of 5 eggsspeeds ok, not great

Pros: easy to configure, worked, mostly..

Cons: even with great signal and 10 ft from the router, the speed throughput on this was not very good (about 7mbps tops)

Other Thoughts: it was usable, and stable, but the speed wasn't very good.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsPoor coverage

Pros: Small, 300mbps

Cons: Difficult setup must be configured prior to installation, taking up extra time also, coverage worse than your standard wifi router, if this is going to be your primary AP in your home keep looking.

Manufacturer Response:

Valued Customer,

4 out of 5 eggsFor the price, it's a great little AP

Pros: *Good Price
*Small size
*300Mbps
*WDS support (have not tested yet, see other comments)

Cons: *No user replaceable antennas (for better coverage, etc.)
*Trendnet isn't kicking me back a couple more for leaving a nice review.

Other Thoughts: I have looked into trying to set up WDS, however my base router has DD-WRT on it, and the settings don't quite match up. I'm pretty sure I could figure it out, but haven't had the time, or need (I have this connected to a ethernet cable anyway), but I would like to try it to see if it works as advertised, and so I can rip out a few ethernet cables in my house.

I did have a problem a while back, and was going to give this thing one star. For a while, I could not connect to the device using any N device. I pulled my hair out, trying to figure out what it was. Finally I figured it out. Encryption was set to a method that my devices werent (AP set to TKIP, devices set to AES) once fixed, I am conecting again at 300Mbps. The range is fairly decent. within ~20 feet I connect around 200-260Mbps, downstairs in a 2000 sq ft house, I get around 135-160Mbps. Overall a decent product, though it could probably be designed a little better (firmware) with more options.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate to previous review from 2/18/12

Pros: Works as advertised in AP client mode, although only at 100Mb/s due to not offering a gigabit ethernet port. Repeater mode SSID security now works with WPA/WPA2 using firmware v3.0.1.0 (1/27/2012).

Cons: 100Mb/s ethernet port. Shipped firmware did not provide advertised features. Had to wait four months for working firmware.

Other Thoughts: I wish you could update prior Newegg reviews. A few days after posting my last review for this product, TrendNet suddenly had the corrected firmware ready to go. Coincidence? ;)
