5 out of 5 eggsGreat USB wireless devices

Pros: Handy as both temporary and as permanent wireless new and old builds. They work well. Program only takes a minute to install.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: None. They work fine for their purpose.

1 out of 5 eggsNo "N" Band Connection

Pros: Small Form Factor, New Egg Shipped on time.

Cons: Adapter has many problems. Will hook up to "G" Band easily. Albeit at only 36Mbps, but at least it will connect. Absolutely will not see, register or connect the "N" Band connection at all when the "G" connection is available. If I change the Router to straight "N" Band it will see the signal but refuses to connect. I have spent hours and hours trying to rectify this issue to no avail. I have changed channels, updated firmware, switched machines this adapter was plugged into, set it right beside the router on the table, cycled through security protocols and encryption schemes to no avail. This adapter will not hook up to "N" Band.

Other Thoughts: One last try! I plugged it into a laptop and went over to the neighbor's house and set it on the table next to his "N" Router. Nada! It just plain does not work folks.I am sending it back to Newegg for a refund. I am very disappointed, I have an older TRENDnet USB Wireless G adapter and it works fantastic and has for like 3 or 4 years now. I just do not get it. Avoid this one.

1 out of 5 eggsI bought 2, bad idea

Pros: It's small. Has a driver CD.

I cannot maintain a continuous conenction longer than 5 minutes with either one. I bought 2 of them for a (just in case) since they were on sale. Turns out I needed to use them finally and the performance was dismal. I used one with a 3 foot USB extension cable (tried different ones). I made a directional cone and got the signal to 80%. Even with signal up to 80% it will consistantly drop connection. The 2nd of the two devices worked slightly better, but found the device crashed out a Windows 7 machine.

Cons: Doesn't work well at all. Gets hot as blazes, which might be why it flakes out. Maybe they should build a temp monitor into the software. LOL.

Other Thoughts: I'll see if I can't return it.

1 out of 5 eggsWireless but barely

Pros: Small. Newegg shipped on time.

Cons: Only works at a distance of about 15 feet line of sight. Any further and any walls it is unable to keep a connection. If you need wireless, more than in the same room as your wireless hub, you should probably look elsewhere. I would not recommend for general use.

Other Thoughts: Supports Mac OSX 10.8, but instructions and software must be retrieved from support site. Knowledgebase is mostly marketing material.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

Please accept our deepest apologies for this inconvenience due to short coverage. I would like to suggest to change your wireless channel to non-overlapping channels 1, 6 or 11 and orientation adjustment of your wireless antenna first if applicable. If it still doesn't help I can guide you every step of the way by emailing me personally at adrian@trendnet.com with "Newegg TEW-649UB" in the subject line and I will contact you immediately to assist you. I hope to hear from you soon and restore your faith in TRENDnet.

Warmest regards,

Adrain

5 out of 5 eggsReally Great

Pros: Works like a champion for me. Wish I had bought several.
I get really good results by plugging it into a 12 inch USB extention cable and letting it hang lower than the computer. Stays cooler and receives better and more consistant signal.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsgreat product

Pros: - Very small so it doesn't get in the way of things
- Consistently high signal strength. It never drops below 90%, from two floors above my router.
- Fast

2 out of 5 eggsConstatnly drops connection

Pros: Small, Looks nice. Works good when it wants to connect.

Cons: Constantly drops signal. Granted, my router is on the 2nd flr and the signal has to travel threw the first floor to reach my computer, but when I do get a signal it's very strong to excellent so I doubt that it's a problem with the signal penetrating my floors.

Other Thoughts: Very aggravating! constantly checking the wireless signal to see if it's connected.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks with Linux with a minor tweak

Pros: This adapter will work with Ubuntu Linux. The solution is on Launchpad, search for RTL8192SU. Download and copy a firmware file to the specified location, insert the device and restart. The blue light will come on and you're in business. The next version of Ubuntu (11.04) will support this 'out of the box'. Signal strength with an ActionTec router is surprisingly good. I was getting 67 mb./sec until I disabled an intel 3954A/B/G(I think)notebook PCI adapter then my speed jumped to 130 mb./sec. Mixed networks-b,g & n mixed can result in lowered n speeds. I do have a Brother wireless g MFD that don't seem to cause network speed reductions.

Cons: It can run warm on some machines.

Other Thoughts: Nice size for notebooks.
