4 out of 5 eggsCute but Outdated

Pros: dual band makes it more likely to find/use an uncongested channel. very small footprint and overall size (about a quarter the size it appears in pictures because the design resembles much larger adapters). no problem picking up N signals on 2.4 and 5ghz bands.

Cons: USB 2.0.
And this isn't going to touch 900Mbps. advertising stacked link rates is lame, but everyone does it.
No AC support.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, the only problem with this is that it doesn't support AC protocols, and you can get adapters that do for nearly the same price these days. So all you're doing with your $30 here is giving yourself the option of a 5ghz band if your device doesn't have native support for that. Unfortunately, even a clean 5ghz band isn't always better than a more congested 2.4ghz band unless you're closer to the signal source and/or have a clear path to it.

the adapter itself is quite small. it's a novel alternative to the typical stick design. but it also comes with the drawback of requiring the micro USB cable (included) whereas a stick design can be inserted directly into a standard USB port.

1 out of 5 eggsApparently I got the wrong tech support person

Pros: None

4 out of 5 eggsTRENDnet TEW-684UB

Pros: Thanks to Joe Fisher, Trendnet's technical support, I got this up and running with Ralink driver on Win8.1.
I am now able to connect to my dual band router @ 5Ghz.

Cons: The adapter keeps tipping over. It more of an annoyance than a con.

1 out of 5 eggsFragile!

Pros: The corded USB adapter might work better in space-constrained builds than a usb stick would. Lightweight?

Cons: Very fragile, somewhat expensive, USB connection broke when inserting cable

Other Thoughts: The USB connector broken off when I inserted the cable. Handle with extreme care.

5 out of 5 eggsBeware of Ralink Driver - REVISED

Pros: Technical Support team actively looks for issues with customers and finds a solution.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The previous review was mine after I discovered that Trendnet's own driver had very poor performance. Joe Fisher from their technical support contacted me after the review and mentioned that they were actively working on a fix. However, he pointed me to the Ralink driver that would work (http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads/usb/), and now I see the 5 Ghz band at 121 mbs download speed (up from 36 mbs). The difference between the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands are 85 mbs versus 121 mbs. I get my full performance (wired download speeds match wireless download speeds) all of the time because I can use the less congested 5 Ghz bandwidth. Thank you Trendnet for being responsive!

3 out of 5 eggsBeware of Ralink Driver for Win 8.1 Update

Pros: I compared this adapter to two other adapters and it has better transfer rate than either of the other two.

Trendnet TEW 684U (2.4 Ghz) 114.9 Mbs
Internal N laptop adapter (2.4 Ghz) 90.9 Mbs
Dual 6 dBi antenna 300 mbs adapter (2.4Ghz) 79.1 Mbs

Cons: Ralink and Trendnet teamed up to create a driver that will allow the 5 Ghz band to be seen in Win 8.1 Update. They succeed in creating the driver; however, the performance of the Ralink driver (both 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands) is dismal and if you use the driver you will see 2/3 of your possible download speed disappear (versus the use of the native Windows 8.1 driver).

For comparison stake, I took the following measurements:

native Windows driver (2.4): 114.9 mbs
Ralink driver (2.4): 32.3 mbs

native Windows driver (5.0): N/A
Ralink driver (5.0): 36.8 mbs

Of course, the native Windows driver doesn't work at 5 Ghz, but you get the idea.

In my opinion, this is not acceptable if you have a fast connection and want to get the most of it. Perhaps someone at Trendnet thought this was good enough performance when the driver fix was rolled out.

I contacted Joe Fisher at Trendnet and he mentioned that the case was given to the product engineering team, but I have not heard back since 5/19.

This has the potential to be an amazing adapter (based on my 2.4 Ghz comparison); however, Trendnet needs to quickly correct their 5 Ghz band fix if they want to people who have high speed connections to take them seriously.

The $30 price point allows for this performance flaw to be mitigated. If it was priced higher, I would not recommend the adapter as the 2.4 and 5 Ghz band performance is not acceptable for people who have Xfinity 105 Extreme service due to the Ralink driver.

Fix the driver and then you will have a must have adapter.

Other Thoughts: I have an Asus RT-N66U router, which I bridged with my Xfinity 105 Extreme service. The router is one floor up and about 35 away with a staircase, floor, and two walls between it and the TEW 684U adapter. My wired speeds max out at 122 mbs.

I purchased this adapter so that I could take advantage of the 5 Ghz bandwidth since I have 16 overlapping 2.4 Ghz bands in my area. However due to bad performance of the Ralink driver, I use the native Windows 8.1driver and stay in the 2.4 bandwidth range.

5 out of 5 eggsProblem free

Pros: I've had this set up on a desktop in a back bedroom for a few weeks now. Installation was a breeze and it has worked flawlessly. I don't know what else to say. It just works.

Cons: None that I can think of.
