1 out of 5 eggsDrops connection constantly

Pros: Got it on sale for and it does deliver high speeds of up to 300Mbps that I saw when it was actually connected. Couldn't keep it connected long enough to get the speeds higher than that though.

I like how its a unit that you can stand up and place away from your usb slot, freeing up some room around there that some other usb wireless devices hog up. Its also a very solid device, no flimsy parts found.

Cons: It drops connection constantly. Read the other reviews, there are several people with this problem. This makes the adapter useless as you cannot maintain a connection for longer than a minute.

Now of course I've contacted support to try to resolve these issues, but its approaching 3 days and they haven't even acknowledged me. Any day now guys.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Chu,

We are sorry to hear that you are having an issue with the adapter. Please go to our website and download the latest driver for the unit. Please also make sure the unit is not placed near anything that could cause radio frequency interference. You can also try changing the channel selection on your wireless access point or router to see if that improves the situation. If you have turned off your SSID broadcast on your wireless access point or router please turn it back on to see if that is causing the issue.

If you need any additional assistance please email Adrian@trendnet.com. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.

Regards,

Adrian

4 out of 5 eggsWireless USB

Pros: Does what it is supposed to do and connects fine. Using Windows 8.1. Shell Shocker deal!

Cons: Very small and light weight which can cause it to fall over just from the weight of the USB cord. Even so, it still works.

Other Thoughts: I did not give it 5 stars because I have only been using it for a couple of months. If it lasts a year or more without problems I would update to 5.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat wireless adapter

Pros: So far so good. Once I found the appropriate Windows 8 driver, this adapter was getting me my max down/ups speeds (50/50Mbps). I haven't tested it over my home network for speed rates, but I haven't had any trouble streaming HD video thus far.

Cons: Tips over easily. Could have used a wider base.

Other Thoughts: Works well with Windows 8.1. Download the driver from the Mediatek website (http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads/). It will be the version that was released on 8/13/2014. Once I had that installed, I had no trouble connecting to 5Ghz wireless networks.

4 out of 5 eggsCute but Outdated

Pros: dual band makes it more likely to find/use an uncongested channel. very small footprint and overall size (about a quarter the size it appears in pictures because the design resembles much larger adapters). no problem picking up N signals on 2.4 and 5ghz bands.

Cons: USB 2.0.
And this isn't going to touch 900Mbps. advertising stacked link rates is lame, but everyone does it.
No AC support.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, the only problem with this is that it doesn't support AC protocols, and you can get adapters that do for nearly the same price these days. So all you're doing with your $30 here is giving yourself the option of a 5ghz band if your device doesn't have native support for that. Unfortunately, even a clean 5ghz band isn't always better than a more congested 2.4ghz band unless you're closer to the signal source and/or have a clear path to it.

the adapter itself is quite small. it's a novel alternative to the typical stick design. but it also comes with the drawback of requiring the micro USB cable (included) whereas a stick design can be inserted directly into a standard USB port.

1 out of 5 eggsApparently I got the wrong tech support person

Pros: None

Cons: Contacted tech support to get the Windows 8.1 64 bit driver only to be told by Norman that this device doesn't support windows 8 or 8.1

4 out of 5 eggsTRENDnet TEW-684UB

Pros: Thanks to Joe Fisher, Trendnet's technical support, I got this up and running with Ralink driver on Win8.1.
I am now able to connect to my dual band router @ 5Ghz.

Cons: The adapter keeps tipping over. It more of an annoyance than a con.
