1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Very awesome router if you do not mind sharing your internet with the neighbors.

Cons: Buggy set up software. Set MAC filtering, then put a password on it, worked so far. Mac filtering did do its job, untill I turned off SSID broadcasting and could not get back in to the router. I had to reset and reprogram at that point.

Other Thoughts: I have a couple other of their products and they are great. This product is lacking though, to difficult to secure. You use the common security items and get locked out.

Manufacturer Response:

Valued Customer,

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please see it hleps or not while adding a wireless connection profile and check option to automatically connect regardless of broadcast of that particular SSID or not from your PC. If not, please contact us at sales@trendnet.com, reference "New Egg TEW-711BR product review" and someone will contact you immediately to resolve your issue. We look forward to working with you directly and restoring your faith in TRENDnet products.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Inexpensive. Works well as an access point. Works well with multiple APs using the same SSID for automatic switchover.

The Trendnet staff was amazing in working with me to solve problems. Narrowed the problem down to Win 8 RTM not having the latest wireless driver. I gave this product an initial review of 3 eggs. Now it is 5 eggs. Kudos to Steve at Trendnet for helping chase down the problem.

Cons: Good but not great coverage. Insufficient information to make the best choices setting up the device. This problem is not unique to the TEW-711BR. There's a lot of stuff that happens when a device works in b/g/n mixed mode. It would be very useful to have that information in the manual. Also, the manual should describe how to set up the device as a wireless Access Point on a wired network.

Other Thoughts: My initial report was 3 eggs because of a glitch running a Dell M4700 with the TEW-711BR. The only way I could get decent performance was to run the TEW-711BR in g mode. It turned out to be a driver issue with Windows 8 RTM. Now I can run the TEW-711BR in b/g/n mixed mode, with the Dell laptop in n mode. The throughput peaks around 38 Mbps.

1 out of 5 eggsWaste of time

Pros: Reasonably priced.

Cons: Not reliable, lasted about 1/2 hour.

Other Thoughts: Bought it 3 months ago, just now tried to use it. Spent half an hour setting this router up, and it appeared to be working OK. But suddenly, no response either via cable port or wireless. Reset to factory default, but so flaky that I could not reconfigure it. Not even worth the sale price.

1 out of 5 eggsNot so good

Pros: Price

Cons: User interface is not intuitive. Setup router using DHCP and it kept giving duplicate IP's and the duplicate IP's kept moving around to various PC's regardless if they were wireless or wired. Caused whole network to lag dramatically!

Other Thoughts: I have other trendnet devices and I am on the fence on their reliability!

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work as advertised

Pros: cheap

Cons: Wasted money. No faster that my old b/g 54mbps router. Even using a trendnet brand wireless usb adapter on my laptop I can only get 72mbps from 5 feet away. I can connect to my ASUS router at 132mbps. Guess I should have bought another ASUS but I thought trendnet products would work well together. I was wrong.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Low price, helpful tech support

Cons: It's no good. It configured the first time I set it up. After that I could ping it but could not connect to it wirelessly, and I could not access its configuration page. It's very slow to reboot after being reset. I spent 1/2 hr with their tech support -- who was helpful -- but to no avail. I bought one of their green switches some time back and it was fine, but the router I got is no good.

3 out of 5 eggsHad to run in g mode for good performance

Pros: Cheap. Easy to set up. Adequate performance once I figured out that running in b/g/n compatibility mode was slowing it down.

Cons: Using a Dell Precision M4700 with the TEW-711BR configured for b/g/n compatibility, the throughput was in the 1-5 mbps range. Surprisingly, the Properties tab on the M4700 WiFi indicated a link speed 72 mpbs. That was clearly a hypothetical number based on the mode. Setting it to g mode brought the throughput up to a measured 20 mbps.

Other Thoughts: If you read on the web, some claim that supporting the slower b lowers the throughput. There is a dialog on the subject on superuser.com

I measured the throughput using speedtest.net. My throughput is 50 mbps using my wired gigabit ethernet, so I knew that lower numbers measured on a WiFi connection were due to the WiFi throughput.

1 out of 5 eggsSetup Wizard was anything but a Wizard

Pros: Inexpensive, quick shipping by newegg

Cons: I purchased this router because my TP-LINK router began dropping connection intermittently which is really frustrating when you are watching a movie on Netflix. Sometimes resetting the TP_LINK worked and sometimes it didnt. This router have really good reviews, although only 14. When it arrived and came with an installation guide that was about 15 pages in 5 languages, so basically it said plug your router in, log in to the IP address and use the wizard. An hour and a half later could not get any wired internet connection, much less a wireless, although my wire less devices saw the network, none of them could get the internet, Even using WPS i was able to connect to the network but not the internet, Finally gave up and re-connected the TP-LINK router and am at least able to have connection most the time. I went to the TrendNet website for support, (using the TP-LINK router) and downloaded the 28 page user manual which didnt offer any anymore help than the helpless "wizard"

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Speeds

Pros: 1 Egg for being cheap
1 Egg for Working and setting up easy.

Cons: Lost 1/10th of my internet speed, and at least half of my network speeds after installing this. Not worth returning to them because they would sell it to someone else thinking that its a good router. Going to closet it and use it in case of emergencies. Tried everything i could think of to get any kind of speed back and nothing worked. I wouldnt suggest this to anyone that wants to buy a router, even if its cheap its not worth it. Speed and little more and get a Linksys.
