1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy this product. Really. Do not buy one

Pros: It powers up

Cons: I've always read bad product reviews with a grain of salt. Usually the author has an ax to grind, or just decided to complain instead of getting the unit replaced/fixed. My level of expertise is high as I set up home networks for a living. This unit was purchased knowing full well it was very low end. The expectation was to load trendnet's firmware upgrade and all would be well enough for my needs. After all the trouble I've had with this model, i've come to realize trendnet built this piece of garbage for the DD-WRT crowd. They fully expected the market segment for this product to throw away the native firmware for an open source alternative.

The unit loses WAN connection at least once a day. No other home router i own does this with my ISP. Only trendnet. The date/time automatic set function simply does not work. Setting the date/time manually doesn't work either. I am a product of the 70's and so is this unit since it consistently sets its date to Jan 1, 1977 upon restart, which is once a day to regain my WAN connection. The DHCP table is inaccurate. Their are twelve devices on my network. However, the DHCP table only shows four. No matter the network wiring configuration tested, only four entries display in the DHCP table. All devices do get an address from the DHCP server, which is a good thing, but the router only shows the first four.

I have two open support cases with trendnet that are being solved at the rate of pouring frozen guinness. Their testing disproves my DHCP four entries problem. Great. So what is their recommendation? Nothing. They have no suggested configuration alternatives, just that they don't see the problem. There has been no response to either the timeserver or WAN connection dropping problems.

So, I hate to be the one to say this, but this model is a piece of garbage and it appears trendnet doesn't really care if it is. As I mentioned before, it is their low end model and the biggest feature they tout regarding this unit is its DD-WRT compatibility. For the price, I expected this to be a throwaway if it didn't work, so I am throwing it away. I tried to do the right thing by contacting support before submitting my review. However, the terrible support experience has turned me off to the company's entire product line. I'll stick with asus, netgear and cisco from now on.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello TypicalEgger,

We are sorry to hear that you experienced issues with the TV-IP712BR. The router itself does not have a battery backup. If you set the time manually and the router is power cycled it will need to be set again. To ensure the router maintains the correct time through a power cycle please use the NTP option. When Internet service is restored it will re-synch with the time server for the correct time. We will also look into and see if we can recreate the issue you are experiencing with the DHCP client list and WAN connection drop issue. It very well may be a hardware issue with the unit you have. To rule out a hardware issue please email adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you with submitting an RMA request for warranty services. Please include a link to this review.

Adrian

1 out of 5 eggsCheap and Cheap

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cheap... Comes with basic firmware loaded on it. No features/options. Replaced firmware with OPEN-WRT. Bricked 1 out of 3 units. Purchased for 7$ each. I guess you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: Although it doesn't make my list of things I would change if i had a time machine. I would never purchase this brand again.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello xer0,

We thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. The TEW-712BR is one of the most basic wireless routers. This model is offered for those that just want the basics. We do carry other models with more robust feature sets as well. There is an inherent risk any time you flash firmware on a unit. You can try putting the unit into recovery mode by holding in the reset button while plugging in the power. The router will default to 192.168.10.1. Configure a PC with 192.168.10.2 for example and you may be able to recover it.

Regards,

Adrian

4 out of 5 eggsOpenWRT is really amazing

Pros: I got three of these on Newegg at a too good to be true price.

I flashed OpenWRT out of the box. There were no hoops to jump through, the firmware update process was completely painless. Using three of these in my house for access points. They give better connection speeds than my Asus RT-53 "300 Mbps" router.

Cons: I wish it was a two antenna 300 Mbps capable unit.

Other Thoughts: Flash OpenWRT openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tew-712br-squashfs-factory.bin and away you go! LuCi web interface included by default.

5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive to Use as a Wi-fi Booster

Pros: When on sale it's a very inexpensive way to boost the Wi-fi signal in a low reception area of your house or out on the deck/patio. Set it up as an Access Point (A/P) to give stronger Wi-fi signal.

Cons: Cheaply made; doesn't have a ton of good reviews.

Other Thoughts: 3 ways you could connect this little router as a Wi-fi repeater:

Plug it into an ethernet jack on the wall in or near a low-reception zone.

Plug it into an ethernet jack on a Powerline adapter near the low-reception zone.

Position it where it receives a reasonable Wi-fi signal from your main router so it can boost the Wi-fi another 15 or 20 feet away.

3 out of 5 eggsOnly for small apartment or studio

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Low range. When WPA is active, transfer speed is low.

Other Thoughts: I didn't need a router with anything fancy. Just do a secure connection, decent range, and fast speed for netflix, gaming, etc. Unless you're within 5 feet of the router, not good.

5 out of 5 eggsgot it for a steal, good value anyway

Pros: Great value, I got it for a steal. TRENDnet offers openWRT for it and a lot of nifty features.

Cons: The stock firmware is good for most people but didn't do it for me; the openwrt firmware is not for newbies and has a steep learning curve for me.

Other Thoughts: 10/10 would buy again, wish I'd bought two or three.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Works great. I needed a cheap router to replace one that went out. Got this as a black friday deal and couldn't be happier. It was simple to set up and I have had no drops since installing it.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Wish I had orderd a couple of these while they were on sale :)

3 out of 5 eggsSo-So

Pros: Easy to setup.

Cons: Drops connection much more often than the TRENDnet Ethernet connection it replaced. This usually occurs if you step away only to come back and the page is gone and you then have to get it going again which is somethings difficult. Ipconfig always shows the connection is fine and in place. Very frustrating as you try to get it back again. The wireless router is 4 feet from the pc? May go back to my old router if this doesn't stop.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Please update the router with the latest firmware update and then reset it and reconfigure it. Choose a different channel to see if you get better results. Check the placement, try to place it as high as possible and avoid anything that would cause radio frequency interference. If you need assistance with the router please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we’ll have someone help you as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

5 out of 5 eggsBudget board makes a great blank slate for OpenWRT

Pros: Recently, this was on sale for super cheap. Inside is a Cameo WLN-2229, the same board as in the D-Link DIR-601 B1.

The combination of the Atheros chipset, OpenWRT support, and modification-friendly design makes this an excellent choice for the advanced cheapskate.

Things I like:

- The serial and JTAG connector footprints are not already filled in with solder, which saves a lot of time and hassle if I need to populate them.
- Even though this router was not marketed with USB funcitonality, Cameo routed the USB lines from the CPU to an accessible place so that it can be modded in later, if needed.
- Unlike the D-Link router mentioned above, TRENDnet specified to populate the power switch. This makes it really easy to power cycle the unit over and over again while testing/debugging without having to mess with the power connector.

Cons: The smooth, shiny piano black finish is a dust and fingerprint magnet. I would've gone with a matte or textured finish if it were my decision...

5 out of 5 eggsGood router for cheap

Pros: Great little router that has run like a champ for over 2 years now. I got it on sale for $15 in 2012, and just bought another one for $7 (BF 2014) for a relative with wireless issues.

Cons: Limited Cable ports in the back

Other Thoughts: Not sure its worth the full price, but if you see it on sale, definitely snag it.
