3 out of 5 eggsTech "help" not, works with Mac--after hard setup

Pros: Once you get this working, it works well and as advertised. That said, there are some negatives, listed below

Cons: On opening the box, all of the contents are as expected and are well packed. The unit itself is partially covered with a sheet of clear plastic. And that is problem number 1.

As noted above, the numbers on the router are small and are on the label. The clear plastic covers the label, and mine was so stuck that it actually tore the label. Luckily, I spotted it in time and cut the remainder of the plastic off, leaving the portion covering the label. I noted in one of the instructional videos (the Newegg one, I believe) that the demonstrator noted that the plastic was "strange" to take off. I didn't think much about that until my experience.

Second, if you have a Macintosh be aware that their "easy install disk" is useful for two things: It has a PDF of the manual and it makes a fair coaster. I know I will get little pity from you Windows guys, but it was a pain. In fact, so much of a pain that I called tech help, clearly a group based in India (or I got the only two India citizens in the company in my two calls). I was, ultimately, assured that there was a "hardware problem" with my unit. This just didn't feel that way.

I might add that four times I was put on hold "for two minutes" so that the helper could gather more data. I ended frustrated, although I would rate his courtesy high. I think I'd have rather had someone who yelled at me but helped solve the problem!

After about an hour of work, I got the darn thing working. And it does work well--the router routes and the repeater repeats.

Finally, I believe that the USB port for the "shared drive" is not powered, which means that a device that requires power from the USB port must go through a powered USB splitter. I have not absolutely confirmed this, but I tried a regular memory stick and had no problems, and was unable to get the WD "unpowered" hard drive to be recognized.

Other Thoughts: It would sure be nice if Newegg (or someone) did a sheet on how to set this thing up using a Mac. I would buy it again, but I feel like I slogged through mud to get it working. And I did so alone!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We are sorry to hear that you ran into installation issues. Installation of the TEW-714TRU is performed through a web based interface. The instructions in the Quick Installation Guide are for both Windows and Mac. The CD-ROM contains the User’s Guide and the Quick Installation Guide. There is no utility for this unit, even for Windows. The information located on the label is on the outside of a protective film. It is a pretty aggressive film but there is no adhesive on it. In the event that the label on the film is damaged or lost, the same information is also printed on the back label. The USB share port on the unit provides up to 500mA for power. We apologize for the experience you had with the support group. If you need any further assistance please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we’ll have someone help you as soon as possible. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.

Regards,

Adrian

2 out of 5 eggstwo thumbs done

Pros: It does work, and it has a nice charger built in which I like.

Cons: This is one of the worse purchases I've ever made. My ZunniConnect ZR-301 had broken, and I need new router to connect my tablet to my chromecast when traveling. The setup on this product is weak.

First, it has a custom wireless key and password, printed on it with hard to read and easy to scratch ink. It supports WPS, so the network key is not a big deal, but when (and this is not if, I plan to travel with it) ink scratches off, I will will lose the ability to reset it and log-in as I travel for work.

I find that after a few hours of use, it adds massive latency (500-1500 ms), as tested by connecting to it, and then strait to the hotel's network. Reboot gets it back up to snuff.

The setup is weak with the network browser showing all access points in WISP mode, rather than just the SSIDs, also, the strength indicators don't appear to match reality vs all other devices I own.

I purchased this because it was the only router sold buy Newegg directly I could verify worked to rout to a wireless network establishing a local isolated network, and I needed it next day.

Other Thoughts: I would strongly recommend against this product. It may have the features you need, but every moment of using it makes obvious that it's a piece of junk.

I'm unlikely to ever buy TRENDnet again, the features were obviously added to market via list, rather than make a more than barely usable product.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We are sorry that you are having these issues with the unit. We included the same login information found on the label that you can secure in case the information on the label is rubbed out. The serial number is also located on the box. In the event that this issue occurs we can provide your default information. If all else fails, we will be happy to replace the unit under warranty if you lose the ability to log back into the unit. Please ensure you have the latest firmware update for the unit installed. After the firmware update please reset it to factory defaults by pressing and holding in the reset button located on the bottom of the unit for approximately 5 seconds. If you continue to experience latency issues with the unit we would recommend an RMA for warranty services on the router to rule out a hardware issue. Please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we’ll have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.

Regards,
Adrian

4 out of 5 eggsEasy to set up and use

Pros: I initially set it up at home and suggest others do the same. It was fairly easy, but be sure to follow the more detailed user manual. I did not use the WPS method to connect; I prefer to select my network and put in the password.

I tested all three modes of operation: Router, WISP, and Repeater for quite a few times. It worked fine and had real good bandwidth with apps like speedtest. I easily streamed two 1080p mp4 videos through it to two mobile devices simultaniously. It did well, repeatedly. I tested it frequently for about a week, and it worked fine. I mostly used WISP mode, since that is what would be used most frequently. Everything about this router worked very well.

This is truly an international travel router, because of the interchangable power plug adapters.

Cons: None really, although I wish it's data rate was 300Mbps instead of 150Mbps, and why I give it 4 stars and not 5. I would prefer more headroom for streaming use, although my videos did stream OK.

Other Thoughts: I received this as a gift after I had poor results with an earlier (older) model travel router. It had problems staying connected, but not this model. It worked perfectly.

Although I had plans to use it recently for travel, the wireless where we stayed was so bad, (sometimes less than 1Mbps!) that trying this out there would not have helped much or even been a fair test. My testing at home tells me this thing will work fine out on the road, given good wireless to piggyback on.
