1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your time

Pros: Easy set up

Cons: High failure rate. I have installed numerous of this model in different outdoor applications. I've experienced a failure rate of approx 90%. Most of them within the first year. I had one last for 2 1/2 years, but failed within 6 months after being moved outdoor. Seems it doesn't stand up to the 'Outdoor' claim!?

1 out of 5 eggsNever Used

Pros: Package looks great! Clean design. Still in Original box from about 2 years ago and wanted to give it another shot.

Cons: Well kinda hard to explain as the two that I received never powered up. I tried and even hooked up the ground cable to the POE. When holding the reset button the little red light blinks very faint. I purchased these along time ago so I'm sure they cant be returned but they do look nice so they sit in the original box. lol

Other Thoughts: Had to switch to 3-com and the support there is never good so I switched to Unifi

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Jason L.,

We appreciate your time in posting your comments and feedback. We are sorry to hear about your experience.

I understand that you have two ENH200EXT units that don’t power on. From the description that you gave it is likely because the EPE-24R PoE injectors that you have are not working properly. You are right in that your devices are already beyond the allotted warranty period but you can still purchase the proprietary EPE-24R PoE injectors directly from us. You may reach us through our number at 1-888-735-7888 (Monday –Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm PDT).

Thank you for your patience and we apologize for the inconvenience.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: This works really well. Once configured, it allows seamless networking between my laptop and the rest of the network.

Cons: A little hard to configure. It took a great deal of research to figure out how a WDS system and a client bridge works. Once I apprehended the fundamentals of these systems, configuration was a snap. I needed to understand these systems and how to configure them before I could take full advantage of this device.

Other Thoughts: I use this in concert with an RP-SMA 2.4GHz 25 DBi Yagi Wireless WLAN WiFi Antenna For Modem PCI Card Router also available from NewEGG.

3 out of 5 eggsSo-so

Pros: Must be used with EAG-2408 antenna to get maximum range benefit. At 1200 feet, signal was very weak until antenna was added. Requires some programming expertise to setup. Device works as a modem and is used with a router in an acess point configuration.

Took no time to program and install. Works better than advertised. The built-in software is self-explanatory and not overly technical. Decent, good for the money, but will probably leave you wishing you would have spent more for a more robust device.

Cons: It definitely has some quirks, and it does have to be rebooted from time to time. If you are looking for a device that you will almost forget about being part of your network though, this is not it. Maybe a firmware update in the future will take care of these things.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the money, difficult to configure

Pros: The device is able to be mounted on a pole, pvc pipe, or anything really. Its design on the back is flat, and has rounded groves if you are mounting to a round surface. It appears like it can mount up to about 2 inch poles, I have not tried to mount for exact though.

The ability to increase the transmission power to the device. There is a check box option to ‘obey regulatory power’ however, I'm not certain that is good for the device long term.

This device has the ability to boost up to ‘30km’. I do not see this being absolutely possible, I can reach approximately 100 feet across a straight area with about 75-80% signal strength
All of the standard wireless settings are configurable; Mac address filtering, changing SSID. This device also includes the ability to throttle the wireless speed on connecting devices.

This has an ‘Auto Reboot’ option, which can help clear some of the pesky wireless issues that may come about if you are connecting to several different networks. You can configure it reboot in increments of minute, hour, day, week.

Comes with its own proprietary POE injector. This has a ground ‘plug’ on the side of it. The longest cable I tried was with a 50 foot Cat5e cable. It had plenty of power at the other end to broadcast.

Cons: The devices was extremely difficult to connect to out of the box. I had to switch over to my laptop and disable the wireless, connect manually. This also required manually configuring the IP address on the LAN.

After clicking ‘accept’ on the setting, there is no pop up indicator stating the system will need to reload to save the settings. You have to click on the ‘Save/Reload’ option underneath status.

Out of the box, the default setting on the ‘distance’ is 1km. I immediately increased this to the 30km selection and got a much better signal strength overall.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking to broadcast a signal from one building to another, I could recommend setting up another router at the other end to catch the signal and rebroadcast. It was able to carry a signal in the open for about 100 feet distance. After I got a few ‘walls’ inside the house, the signal was all but lost.

In the instructions, it states to click on ‘system properties’ in the ‘system’ menu. There is no ‘system properties’ selection at all. I think they mean to click on ‘operation mode’. This could be a simple firmware fix, but this is lack of quality control. Firmware version 1.1.13

I’m not sure why the default IP address is, this is very problematic, and requires some knowledge to see past. After you connect to it you can enable obtaining an IP address automatically. This is a foolish mistake.

I think this device could be a lot better if there was a bit more time and detail placed on the user interface.

I think this deserves more of a 3.5 stars than 4. But once configured it worked as intended.

4 out of 5 eggsPower Underwhelming, Not for me but may be ok for others

Pros: - Once you get to the GUI it is fairly easy to get everything set up.
- The plastic is fairly solid
- Includes antenna adapter cable
- So far has no had any reboot loops or other problems
- Settings to automatically reboot on an interval
- Uncapped transmit power (but this is a tricky subject)

Cons: - Proprietary POE injector
- Default IP is which conflicts with a lot of consumer routers, requiring a few extra steps to setup.
- Even with a large antenna it had weaker performance than my regular router in an omni-directional situation.
- It's super large and clunky.
- Compared to my regular router it had less speed in a wireless N speedtest.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure if this AP just isn't for my situation. I live in a fairly urban environment and I had a dead corner with my current router where I would have signal but the connection was sporadic, so I ran some ethernet and set this up with a High-Gain Omni Directional RP-SMA antenna (14") pointed directly at my dead spot. I stupidly set it up then realized that its default IP was the same as my router so I had to change settings on my router then this then change the router back. Also, the default wifi settings on the AP aren't that of an access point so make sure you select that option also.

The unit its self is quite large and bulky. Its length is about the same as a loaf of bread with a little less mass. When combined with an antenna it's fairly monstrous.

Once it was mounted and configured I ran a few speed tests on the network:
EnGenius (Wireless N): Download: 11.90 Upload: 1.49
DLink DGL-5500 (Wireless N): Download: 16.42 Upload: 2.56
DLink DGL-5500 (AC): Download 26.76 Upload: 2.54

This was performed in the area I wanted to improve reliability in. As you can see the speed was better with the consumer router, and both systems had reliability issues (I think the room is just a black hole).

The EnGenius was mounted on the opposite wall of that room so I think if it was inside the room it may have improved reliability, but I think there are just too many other signals in that room from neighbors for any wireless system to perform well.

To get the most out of this router I really think you need to use it in a suburban area with a directional antenna to boost signal to maybe a guest house or barn. In an urban area you really would want something smaller and sleeker, and definitely spend the extra on something that has 5GHz wireless AC available.

4 out of 5 eggsNovices Beware

Pros: Has an ability to provide more then the legally allotted power by region to the transmitter. Has excellent configuration options, DHCP server

Cons: No online help(-1) for more esoteric router options.

Interface isn't following standards, but quickly learned

No Ethernet cables ( even a three footer)

Other Thoughts: The EnGenius ENH200 EXT provided the ability to hook up to the main Wi-Fi on my friends ranch from a pump house which was a little over a mile from the farmhouse. Since it was all private property with a good 2 mile buffer from the nearest property I was able to utilize the power setting feature of the product to max out the power to the transmitter which gave a solid signal to the remote PC. Please note that in an urban environment, this _could_ lead to trouble as transmitter power is limited by the FCC. I was surprised there was no warning dialog about this when I unchecked "observe regulatory power" and cranked it to the max.

We mounted the unit inside the main house and ran the antenna lead thru a hole to a lightning arrestor and then up to a simple whip antenna ( we were prepared to use to high gain parabolic if needed) We used a USB dongle Wi-Fi "N" attached to a pole 6 feet high at the pump house.

Signal strength was three of five bars which was great as it wasn't exactly line of sight.

The EnGunius has a large number of operating modes and features designed for larger operations, such as a series of hotspots linked together to provide wide area Wi-Fi.

Bottom line-it's a good buy for an above average networking person with a specific mission. It has all the goods an expert networker could want, but perhaps a little much for a novice as with no online help you have to refer to the well laid out manual ( on a 3.5 inch cd) for assistance. Keep in mind that you WILL NEED an external antenna AND a lightning arrestor to safely install this product. The ground wire needs to be attached to a plumbing ground ( NOT GAS) or a bit of rebar driven at least 4 feet into the ground. Check your local building codes.

This was a Newegg EggXpert review. I was involved in the development of software to support wireless devices for digital cameras well before they became mainstream and an expected item in personal computers.

2 out of 5 eggsOnly good for a year

Pros: Initially works great

Cons: Setup is difficult unless you're a tech wizard. Expect to wait on hold at least 1/2 hour for tech support. Super sensitive to power spikes. I've lost 3 units from lightning surges.

Other Thoughts: Not many options for outdoor wireless solutions. If I had another choice I would go with it. I'm tired of buying replacement Engenius products every year.

4 out of 5 eggs1 Mile PtP

Pros: -Solid Construction
-Easy Mount to a Pole
-PoE Injector Included
-Simple GUI
-Excellent value

Cons: -GUI requires you to click "SAVE" on the left hand sidebar after "saving" changes that you already made.

This extra step confused the hell outta me for a while until I saw it sitting there with about 10 changes to take effect (you'll see).

Anyway, I updated the firmware and got it working in a half hour, after wasting 20 minutes by not seeing the "save" button on the left hand sidebar.

Other Thoughts: Excellent value piece that has been rock solid so far.

Here is my network setup:
-Modem with 25mbps connection
-Asus RT-N12 router with 500mw Alfa voltage booster to a 50' LMR400 cable and 24db TP Link antenna. Running DD-WRT fw.
-ENH-200 in Client Bridge mode on a static IP connected to router 1 MILE AWAY. I have the ENH-200 at only 15db boost and am getting -50db signal. Noise is -90+. The ENH-200 is also hooked up to a 24db TP Link grid antenna.
Speed: I'm getting 14mbps internet speed on speedtest from a mile away on a 25mbps connection at the modem.
Security: WPA2-PSK (AES)

2 out of 5 eggsProprietary PoE is Not Your Friend

Pros: Easy setup and everything you need is in the box.

Cons: PoE injectors on 2 units were dead out of the box.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't remind replacing the dead PoE injectors, but these are proprietary and EnGenius doesn't make replacements for this particular model. You have to return or buy another AP and so far I've been unable to find a replacement PoE made by another manufacturer that will work. Just imagine the joy you'll have in having to replace an AP because of a dead PoE.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused you. Please contact us at 888-735-7888 or e-mail us at for any issues regarding the proprietary PoE injectors. Our customer support team would be glad to provide solutions for you.
