2 out of 5 eggsunstable

Pros: Range, outdoor durability

Cons: Stability.

These units do not stand up to multiple users when WPA2/AES. Newer firmware is worse than older.

All of the devices we have (7) have the same issue.

We were able to crash them with 3 users streaming video. Constant ping timeouts and loss of internet connection on firmwares 1.3.7 and 1.5.0 with light traffic.

Firmware 1.1.13 was more stable but still has the issue. All access points needed to be placed on hourly reboots to keep clearing them out. Once the device stumbles, it loses connection to the internet (local network pings are fine). Rebooting solves the issue until the next high traffic situation.

Currently operating with no encryption at all for testing. Appears to be working in this mode reliably. Very disappointing.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Carney K.,

We appreciate your time in posting your comments and feedback. We are sorry to hear about your experience.

We would like to suggest some settings that may help with getting your ENH210EXT working reliably with wireless security enabled. Set the wireless security to WPA2-PSK(AES) and the Group Key Update Interval to 0. Please make sure to use shielded twisted pair cable from the PoE injector to the ENH210EXT and ground the PoE injector properly to prevent static build-up. The cable should not be more than 100m.

Please allow us to do some troubleshooting with you. You may reach us through our number at 1-888-735-7888 (Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm PDT) or e-mail us at support@engeniustech.com (Saturday, Sunday 8am - 4pm PDT). Our support team would be glad to be of service to you.

Thank you for your patience and we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Mike

5 out of 5 eggsTakes some setting up, but amazing range.

Pros: The range! I purchased one of these for my RV park, like another reviewer, because I needed to cover a lot of area. This thing covers a lot of area. I needed solid signal for about 350 ft and I got it. In fact, I can still watch Youtube on my smartphone through this router from 1000 ft. I am a happy customer.

Cons: It took me a while to get it set up. I had trouble getting it to work with another router. That's another thing, it still has to be connected to something else before you get to internet. I posted on EnGenius' support forum and they gave me the info I needed by the next day. My basic problem was an IP conflict. Once I got that rectified, it was good to go. It's just not plug-and-play.

Other Thoughts: I will be buying more of these in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for outdoors when reliability and long range are critical.

Pros: Purchased 2 of these for an RV Park Wifi and after 1 year of operation only had 1 call back (Customer forgot to pay their ISP Bill). Only issue I ran into was during set up when entering the MAC address of the "Master" Device into the Repeater I had to put in 00 for the first 2 digits of the "Master" MAC address. Once I figured that out it worked great. Since that first installation 1 year ago I've purchased 8 more for various Outdoor Wifi projects and have had very happy customers (I own a large computer shop).

Cons: Inputting MAC address in installations where multiple devices are needed (RV Parks) can be a bit tricky.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased 10 devices in the past year and 100% satisfied with every device.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat device, Easy Setup, Would buy again

Pros: We have had it 6 months now, with not a single problem. It provides wireless connection over 400ft away on the other side of a building. Better than expected. Easy setup. Mounted 350ft away from the power/network where it is plugged in.

Cons: No cons what so ever

Other Thoughts: Would buy again. Good Price. Easy Setup. Works great

5 out of 5 eggsLayer 2 Networking Solution

Pros: High quality. The device itself (ENH210EXT) is built really well. All the mounting hardware is manufactured to correctly reflect what the setup guide offers for various Installation options. Comes with a large color poster that clearly shows how all the hardware brackets work.

As far as performance wise, this device works really well. I have this device configured and installed as a WDS Access Point, with various ENH202 devices as WDS stations, sprinkled around the neighborhood. The layer 2 approach to my configuration creates a large multi radio wifi coverage area with one SSID. This network covers several city blocks, with densely packed suburban homes. Most of the coverage area has full wireless penetration throughout each home.

The wireless WDS connections between all the radios fluctuate between 270mb and the full 300mb that these devices advertise. There are various large deciduous trees throughout the neighborhood that seem to create problems occasionally. I ended up maxing out the power output of all the radios under the advanced networking tab in the interface, to accommodate for dead spots.

Cons: The configuration documentation is non existent. The closest thing I came to a configuration guide was bits and pieces from various websites and blogs. Most of the configuration of this network came through various trial and error approaches. Engenius has a support forum that you need to "apply" to. Once you sign up for a support forum account, it took almost a week for a forum admin to "approve" my request, so I can begin asking questions about my gear. I ended up not needing to post any questions, and got various things figured out through reading recent conversations over the past few months on their forums.

These devices do work really well once you take the time to really understand how they work inside and out.

I believe that there is a huge hole in support. There does not seem to be any sort of comprehensive documentation of network installation, configuration, or basic troubleshooting. Some may think that Engenius should not have to spoon feed customers like this, and I agree in not expecting them to build my networks. What I am simply asking for is clear documentation in configuring the devices in various ways, with other various devices that support the same WDS models etc. They go into explicit detail on how these devices support all of this, but does not provide a clear documented way of execution.

Other Thoughts: I chose this device as the main AP of my layer 2 network specifically because of the gigabit network ports. I highly suggest that you do the same.

My wired network starts out with a solid gigabit router that has various network resources connected to it via gigabit. External network hard drives etc. The wireless N network that these radios can maintain is on the upwards of 300mb. The ENH202 radios only have a 10/100 nic so you are cutting your wireless throughput into your wired land by 2/3's, effectively negating any throughput gains this radio would bring to your wireless network. Use the ENH210EXT for your WDS AP and use the ENH202 devices as WDS stations, and you will be giving your gigabit network full 300mb throughput of your wireless network.

4 out of 5 eggsFlexible and Easy to Use

Pros: I purchased this outdoor access point as a way to provide WiFi coverage to my backyard where I have a deck and a patio.

The access point was easy to install. One caveat however is to get your own screws and not use the once provided with the package, especially if you are installing it on cedar siding, since it's not a flat surface as recommended by the manufacturer (the walls near my deck aren't flat - except for the chimney brick wall).

The connection to the access point is a single Ethernet cable for which I used a 25ft Cat6 cable. Since it has to pass through the exterior wall, you will need to drill a hole through the siding and the frame to get inside and you'd better have a long and powerful drill. Be sure to seal the hole using caulk or some kind of weatherproof sealing so you don't have humidity or bug issues. I have a RJ45 crimping tool and I crimped both ends myself. The power to the unit is over Etherhet (PoE) and that minimizes the number of connections to the unit. Also, depending on how high off the ground you're installing it, you might need a longer ground cable than the 6ft cable that comes with the package. It is important to ground this as it might be damaged in lightning storms.

The configuration is easy enough for those that have experience configuring wireless routers or APs. It supports b/g/n in mixed or single modes. WPA2 or WEP support security. You can suppress SSID broadcast for additional security.

The signal strength outside is greater than 80 yards (which is how far I could go without entering my neighbor's yard :-). I was able to comfortably stream a Netflix movie in HD. So latency, jitter and performance are not going to be a concern for typical users.

It held up well after rains a few weeks ago. Next big test will be blizzards during winter and how it handles that.

Pros
- ease of setup
- ease of configuration
- good performance

Cons: Cons
- accompanying printed documentation is inadequate, have to read the PDF on the accompanying CD
- screws for installation are inadequate for cedar siding (as it's not a flat surface)

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The exterior is strong enough to handle fierce weather.

Cons: Signal was way over estimated. The device set outside on the second story area of a shed and the signal is 3/4 bars in distance of 200 meters (about an eighth of a mile). The advertisement stated the device would be able to give signal to a full mile.

5 out of 5 eggswonderful

Pros: Not as simple as a Newbie might find an off the shelf router/ AP but not rocket science either. Quick and easy setup. Once I knew the IP scheme of the clients network I was able to configure this at the office in a few minutes. It took more time to run the cable and mount the unit to the pole than it did to configure.

Great reliable range. All the mounting hardware is included. This was an impressive unit, never mind its inexpensive. Customer was really impressed and so was I. I look forward to the next job with these units as they will be used in a WDS configuration.

Cons: during setup make sure and apply your changes and then find the save link on the upper left. Not really a con, but just clicking apply doesnt save the change. But it only took a minute to figure it out (didnt bother to read the manual). Already ordering more units for a second install.

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME unit!

Pros: Solid construction, lightweight. Configures quickly and easily. Great roaming capabilities. Reliable connections.

Cons: None that I can come up with

Other Thoughts: We've been dealing with a different company's product for over 5 years. Due to issues, we gave this unit a try. We'll never go back! This unit worked flawlessly right out of the box. If you use one of these as a client bridge, the roaming works great. (Can't say the same for the other brand we were using.) The signal only drops to 'amber' for about .5 seconds while switching to another access point.

5 out of 5 eggsCorrection

Pros: It was the ENH202 with the plastic mount. The ENH210EXT has a very adequate metal post mount or a metal wall mount.

Cons: NA
