4 out of 5 eggsAfter Setup, Works as Expected

Pros: * Mountable design - space saving
* Design is ok - black and does not unnecessarily draw attention
* "Getting Started" guide is clearly found and directed me right out of the box. No bulky manual. Simple to follow.
* Range is impressive. Reaches all the rooms in my 2500 sq. ft. house and outside as well.
* Signal strength is very good. The signal strength is excellent, giving me the ability to stream video, and copy files at top-notch speed.

Cons: * Packaging: Way too much packaging for the size of the unit, power supply, and other items
* Power supply takes up about one and a half plugs on a power strip. At least it's oriented perpendicular to the power strip, so that it doesn't take up more space or have to be on the end.
* Uses the same IP as my existing router, which made setup challenging. Took me hours, and I'm not new to setting this type of a device up.

Other Thoughts: * The setup took a long time because my router's ip address is the same as the unit. Did quite a bit of messing around to get it to work.
* Tested with my laptop to connect to this unit to connect to my router, which worked as expected. Range improvement? Yes. If you are willing to invest the time to make it work, then this is a good unit.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Access Point

Pros: Easy to setup, wasnt a whole of documentation. Im using it as a access point so not a whole lot of work to be done. Did setup the WPA which was easy. The best part is that there are two external antennas which I am going to upgrade the stock antenna.

Cons: Wish there were better antennas

1 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted

Pros: Detachable antennas, adjustable TX power, DHCP server, AP mode. Solid feature set and east to use web GUI.

The range and throughput were excellent vs. my old Cisco E4500 (about 50% gain in throughput at the same range), that is while the unit worked anyhow (see below).

Cons: After 3 days of use and running just a few speed tests the unit suddenly slowed to the crawl. Connection speeds were still showing 150Mbit or higher but I could not get data to move faster than 1.5Mbit at the fastest. I did a full reset multiple times with no improvement. Plugged my old wireless router back in and it worked fine. So it lasted roughly 72 hours before becoming unusable.

This unit comes configured with a static IP, so that is a minor pain vs. other brands that are set to grab a DHCP address out of the box.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Trevor V.,

We appreciate your time in posting your comments and feedback. We are sorry to hear about your experience.

Changing some settings on the ECB300 may improve the performance. First, make sure that your ECB300 has the latest firmware which is available at our website, Changing the wireless channel, setting the bandwidth to 20MHz only, and if you want to set wireless security please set it to WPA2-PSK(AES) may help improve the connection. Also make sure that there is no 802.11b/g device connected to the wireless network. If these don’t help then you may have to get the device replaced or RMA’d.

Please allow us to do some troubleshooting with you. You may reach us through our number at 1-888-735-7888 or e-mail us at Our support team would be glad to be of service to you.

Thank you for your patience and we apologize for the inconvenience.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent

Pros: The EnGenius ECB300 is a great product for the function and price. The device runs a very bare-bones software and is very stable from what I have found and offers great operating modes.

I particularly liked how it focused on versatility as opposed to number of features it could offer. It can act like a bridge, AP and so on. The range was certainly better than my current router. However, it doesn't matter how far it can go if the device you are wanting to use can't reach the ECB300. Meaning mobile and other hand-held devices may not see all that much of a performance increase.

The antennas are detachable and the TX power is configurable, giving you great control. The device also has some of the basic/essential features for acting like an AP (DHCP, port forwarding, etc).

Provides telnet interface for configuring and reading statistics from the device. Fast boot time and great time in joining wireless networks.

Cons: I was tempted to knock off 1 star because of the advertised Management Software that is included in the box. It is not very user friendly and does not support what I consider a basic function, the ability to clone settings from device to device. Or at least make and restore backups from the management software. The reason I didn't knock off a star was because it is not essential for using any feature of the device.

Another slight drawback is the old-school design of the web interface. The interface looks like a way simple website and kind of makes it harder to find things.

the casing feels like cheap plastic, but has held up great and will probably be fine so long as it isn't knocked to the floor.

Other Thoughts: Using 2 of these can make a great wireless bridge for places you can't get an ethernet line.

1 out of 5 eggsBad choice

Pros: None for us.

Cons: Ordered three of these. I meant to order the ECB350 that works great for us. The ECB300 does not work well. Our telenet sessions to our database server timeout, lockup and dropout. Other network functions operate poorly. I updated the firmware but it had no affect. These are complete useless in our application.

Other Thoughts: I installed a temporary broadband router to get us running and it works perfectly. I ordered different access points from and will be discarding these units.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsLikely the best sub $100 AP

Pros: Easy setup for the person of average computer skills, not kindergarten like the new Cisco/Linksys units mind you.
High power 800mw comes with decent 5dbi antennas, but install remote 9dbi units for best results.
EnGenius Singapore website has the latest firmware v1.2.0
This AP is a nice compact size making it easy to find a nice unobtrusive spot for, has some great features all of which are listed under the "Details", worked great out of the box, easy 2 minute job to set it up.

Cons: None to speak of.

Other Thoughts: Some of EnGenius lower price models leave a lot to be desired, I have an ESR300H (for example) that is absolute worthless junk, if you have experienced that don't be afraid of the ECB300 as it's a whole different animal.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat coverage

Pros: The coverage is amazing. I am replacing a linksys WRT54G that had DD-WRT and 9dbi antennas. I used this in a large apartment complex with over 30 other wifi networks to connect the manager's apartment and office. The apartment and office are 100 feet apart with 6 walls and a laundry room in between. The linksys used to work with the TX power increased by DD-WRT, but the signal degraded as more networks appeared. I hooked up the ECB300 in router mode, left the signal strength at default 26. So far it has worked perfectly, I get a great signal in the office now. IInsider now shows -60 to -64 signal strength with the ECB300 in the office, previously the linksys was at -84 to -88. Amazingly overpowers the other networks, just had to select the least use non-overlapping channel. I also adjusted a few default settings, set to a long pre-amble and 20Mhz only. Left the firmware stock on 1.1.4.
I also used this an access point only during testing and that worked great as well.

Cons: Must enable DHCP before setting to Access Point Router as you will not be able to connect to it once you change to router without DHCP.

Other Thoughts: The antennas are upgradable, I replaced the 5dbi stock to 9dbi, the range did increase and became a little more stable. IInsider showed the signal stayed at -60 in the office, rather than jump from 60 to 64 with the 5dbi.

5 out of 5 eggsStrong!

Pros: High signal strength, fast access, nice options.

Cons: none that I can tell.

Other Thoughts: This thing puts out some serious power. The only issues I run into with high power AP's is that handheld devices can see the AP, but the handheld devices aren't strong enough to reach the AP. This isn't the AP fault of course. I turned down the power on mine to match my other devices so they aren't trying to connect to a AP they can't reach. I didn't use DDWRT firmware since I found the built in firmware just fine.

2 out of 5 eggsNot as clean as ECB3500

Pros: Fast with fairly good signal strength.

Cons: configured as a repeater, primary router is 2wire att dsl gateway. Does repeat the signal but constant drop outs make it unstable. To fix it you have to power cycle it.

I am wishing i pushed the client to get the older model

Other Thoughts: I am going to reconfigure it as the primary wireless ap.
Disable the 2wire WIFI and plug it in direct.
I'm hope full the signal is stronger than the 2wire and extends the coverage.
