Compact and stylish design:
The stylish, compact metal housing of GS-108B fits any working environment. The affordable and reliable series comes with 8 ports to meet network expansion needs.

Gigabit Ethernet boosts speed up to 10/100 times faster:
The ZyXEL GS-108B 10/100/1000 Mbps desktop switch is designed for reliable high-performance networks with speeds 10 times faster than Fast Ethernet connections. With the non-blocking switching fabric in full-duplex mode, the maximum speed can reach up to 2000 Mbps per port, while the store-and-forward service brings low latency and error-free packet delivering.

Easy to connect multiple devices:
GS-108B is a 8-Port desktop switch with plug-and-play capability. With the Nway auto-negotiation function, the GS-108B connects network counterparts with highest possible network speed and activates duplex mode automatically. You can easily connect networked devices such as PCs, network storage and print servers to the network without any manual configuration.

Energy saving via link status and cable length detection:
GS-108B compliant with IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet standard provides power-saving benefits without compromising performance. GS-108B automatically reduces power usage when it detects any shut down network device or inactive link. That is the power consumption of GS-108B adjusts according to the number of active network devices.

The GS-108B can also detect the length of connected Ethernet cables and adjust power usage accordingly. The shorter the Ethernet cable length, the less power it consumes.

    Features:
  • Compact and stylish design
  • Plug-and-play for easily connecting up to 8 network devices
  • Gigabit Ethernet boosts speed up to 10 times faster than Fast Ethernet
  • Automatically adjust the power consumption by detecting the link status and cable length
  • Loop detection support for stable network connections

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Switch

Pros: I've had this switch for half a year now, and it's been nothing but wonderful! It routes perfectly and stays cool even though its constantly in use due to my home server. Lots of ports, extra even with all my stuff connected. Great at sharing Gigabit speed with my Fios iNets.

Cons: Only thing that bugs me, but isn't really a fault, is the lights on it. Its placed where i can see it when i sleep, and the lights blinking lights up my wall, but i usually keep some papers in front of it to block to wall. Just as a personal preference of complete darkness though. Great product though.

Pros: None.

Cons: Defective out of box. Would not power on.

Other Thoughts: I needed this switch. Extremely inconvenient. Thought I'd try out ZyXEL for the first time. I guess it will be the last time.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap in most ways

Pros: 8 ports 10/100/1000
Sturdy build
Cheap

Cons: No uplink port - you need a crossover cable with this one to connect it to a router or similar device with a built-in switch. $$

The bundled AC adapter is of the wall wart type that has the plug in the adapter going sideways, and takes up multiple slots in a UPS or power strip. Add a squid. $$

No speed indicator on the LEDs.

Other Thoughts: No mention of jumbo frame support.
No PoE support - must be powered with the wall wart.
The somewhat small 512 kB store-and-forward should be enough as long as you run all 8 ports at the same speed, full duplex. With mixes of 10/100/1000 and heavy large packet UDP use, expect drops.

The LEDs are either bright green, which means "link up and idle", or a less bright green which either means "link up and traffic", or "link down but bleed-through from the adjacent ports' LEDs" - because there's no separator between the LEDs, and GbE packets fly too fast for you to see a flicker, just a dimming, you cannot tell. A tiny piece of plastic between each LED would have helped a lot.

Would I buy again? No, probably not. This is too cheap, even though the aluminum case is nice.

5 out of 5 eggsSwitch Works Perfectly

Pros: Totally plug and go; connected via HomePlug, then to ROKU and Echo. Both devices seem to get perfect signals through the switch

Cons: For some reason it seems to take 10-15 seconds longer for the Echo to ask for a receive an IP from the router.

5 out of 5 eggsPlug it in and Go

Pros: Works as described. I bought 4 of these switches and every one worked out of the box... plug it in and go.

I bought it on sale, so the price was reasonable. I also bought another brand from Newegg that would not sustain the transfer rate. Rather than work to get it functioning, I returned it and bought these.

I use it in a home network to stream video from Windows Media Center to a Panasonic and Samsung TV. It also supports PCs and two HDHome Run boxes for TV recording. All switches go through one Linksys router. I never notice any slow down.

The 8 ports are a nice, since you give one up to connect to the router and the others get used up faster than you realize.

Cons: No light to indicate speed.

Other Thoughts: PC communication speed can be independently verified with an online tool. Many are available.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent switch

Pros: Build quality/Reliability
Speed
Energy efficient

Cons: No visual speed indicator

Other Thoughts: This thing is truly plug and play. Never have to reboot it or worry about it functioning at a high level. Everything connects super fast and it just works as advertised. Also, doesn't get hot. Very reliable switch.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent value for a reliable GbE switch

Pros: I bought one of these 7 months ago for the desk/office section of my home network, replacing a DLink Gigabit switch which kept freezing or resetting. I have had zero problems with it; I never even need to think about it. It seems faster than the DLink, as well as more reliable, though I haven't done any formal measurements. I currently get as close as feasible to attached-disk performance levels on file transfers over the network, allowing for SMB protocol overhead.

Compatibility: It autonegotiates to Gigabit correctly with all PCs (Windows XP), my home fileserver (FreeBSD 7.3 + Samba with Realtek NIC), my firewall (pfSense FreeBSD 8.x with Realtek NICs) , and now my music streaming player (Logitech Squeezebox Touch), and also autonegotiates correctly with our TrendNet 10/100 switch which still serves some rooms and outlets. Note that the Zyxel does support Jumbo frames to 9K though the blurb here doesn't say so. (See below.)

My background: long-time software developer, currently doing corporate network administration on the side; former exec, systems department manager, and network staff at a local/regional ISP.

I was never a Zyxel modem fan when I used to run an ISP, but this switch has been completely solid for me at a bargain basement price. I am now thinking of buying another to replace the TrendNet switch, so I can have GbE on all jacks without needing to think about it.

Cons: No HP or Cisco label on it. Other than that, I don't know of any.

Other Thoughts: The "details" section doesn't say, but according to the manufacturer this switch does support Jumbo frames to 9K. The spec sheet saying so is here: http://www.zyxel.com/us/en/uploads/images/GS105b_108b_ds_09-11-2012.pdf
