4 out of 5 eggsDay 1

Pros: I just set up the router and so far works as advertised. Which you should be taken as a grain of salt since I just received it today.

I had to setup it up initially using an Ethernet connection (per directions) but am able to change configurations through http

Cons: The refurbished model should have come with a network cable (per manual). Too bad mine didn't and reading the reviews neither did others. I wonder how many people even care?

2 out of 5 eggsAlmost, but not quite

Pros: Features are good, but you have to be very patient. I like the simplicity of plugging ina USB drive and using the DLNA capability. But, every time you need to unplug the drive to bulk upload files to it, you have to reboot the router and clear out the minidlna directories. The wireless setup is very easy. I do like the the AiCloud feature to get to my music collection from anywhere.

Cons: Very flaky. The 5g radio stops responding every other day. It will get to the point where I just cannot connect to it and I have to reboot the router if I want to use the 5g frequency. The DLNA is very flaky. Every time the drive is disconnected, you have to clear the minidlna directory structure and let it rescan. I have to do this every time the router is rebooted as well. so every other day, when I have to reboot, I also have to clear the minidlna directories and let it rebuild the index for it to work. I'm not sure which is worse, having my wife and kids complaining because "the internet is broken" again or rebooting the router and having to do the DLNA reset steps.

Other Thoughts: I am trying to live with this, but I will probably RMA this. I will never buy another refurb ASUS product. I regret buying this one. I sure hope I get a better functioning one as a replacement but I am not holding my breath. I will update my review based on the replacement process. Customer service is a big part of the buying satisfaction these now with so many low quality products on the market.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Router. Should get NEW

Pros: - Fast wired gigabit connection
- 2 x USB2 avg speed 9 MBps and up to 18 MBps
- Parental control & nice Web Interface
- Fast restart

Cons: - Wireless coverage range is average, inconsistent and not as good as others stated. Not much better than my old Netgear WNDR-3700.
- 2 weeks ago, I updated my router to the new firmware 3.0.0.4.374_4561. Then, It happened twice no Wifi signal. The restart solved the problem .

Other Thoughts: I am not sure if the new router RT-N66R will work better than the refurbished one. But for sure, it will give me the peace of mind.
I would like to return my router and to get a replacement but it was just over 90 days policy... So, next time, I rather pay a bit more to get a new one.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is really an RT-N66U

Pros: This is the exact same router as the RT-N66U. It even identifies as an RT-N66U when flashed with a 3rd party firmware. I used Tomato by Shibby, and this router works wonderfully.

It easily handles my 120Mb/s internet connection, and the wireless works so much better than my old Linksys E3000.

Cons: When I first set this up I had poor wireless coverage, and I was concerned. However, I figured out that 2 of the antennas had come loose while I was setting it up and I was positioning them. For them to make a good connection, and hence for there to be a good wifi signal, I had to make sure they were really tightened down. After I figured that out, everything worked wonderfully.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Its plenty fast for most use and good range. I get <1ms and ~230mb/s down speed from a room that previously got ~40ms as 200kbps from my previous router.

Software seems good (minus what is in the cons). Plenty of options, very nice user-friendly layout and a nice "for professionals" section for tweakers.

Price is reasonable for the apparent quality, but still a bit high.

Cons: First one arrived DOA. Strangest thing, I set up the password and it became bricked and even Asus recovery tools couldn't help. But, honestly thats expected to happen every once and awhile, and Newegg dealt with it quickly.

You lose all options when in AP mode. It will work, but you cannot even connect through your web browser or their tools.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Works great!

Flash this RT-N66R with DD-WRT Kong K3_AC HIGHMEM, and it works PERFECTLY.

Don't let the title fool you, this is not a referb.

This router is a RT-N66U with a different title so Best Buy doesn't have to price match people because "it's not the same model"

It's stupid marketing stuff, it's a steal, get this instead of the RT-N66U, same router, cheaper price! :)

Cons: Wires dangle and pull on the router if you put the stand on it, if you put it sitting down it works fine.

2 out of 5 eggsStylish look but poor performance

Pros: 1- Stylish look
2- Two USB
3- Three external antennas
4- Great reviews

Cons: I bought this router refurbished thinking it would be as good as a new one since it was Manufacturer Refurbished. The great reviews compelled me to buy this unit but what a disappointment!
The WIFI keeps dropping signal. I can’t even stream a full movie or even do simple research on the web without a drop of signal. I never had that problem with my old D-link DIR 655. I was so busy and did not realize I just reached my 30 days and can no longer return it. I am not happy at all with this router. What a Lost!
A refurbished unit is not such a good idea. I believe the original problem was never corrected before sending it back for resell.

5 out of 5 eggsStrong Wireless and fast Wired Connection

Pros: I was hesitant at first to purchase this router after so many mixed reviews. Most of the reviews were either DOA or works flawlessly so I thought I'd take a chance since this router was on sale (Can't go wrong with 80). I was not disappointed, and am probably one of the lucky ones that received a working unit out of the box.
Setup was painless, replaced the Linksys E3000, opened up firefox and set everything up through the prompts.
The 2.4 and 5.0GHZ bands work great, and connection is solid on both connections. I have 30mbps and 5mbps advertised internet, and on a wired connection I was receiving 36mbps and 6mbps; a huge improvement.
On a wireless connection I was receiving around 35 and 5mbps off the 5GHZ band, and same with the 2.4ghz band; very solid.
My ping went down in league of legends by 20 with it not fluctuating, and I can finally browse servers off steam in counter-strike go.
Our network consists of 11 connected devices at a time, and FFIX14, two PCs with league, netflix, youtube streaming, and xbox one all at once does not slow the connection. It splits the bandwidth really well.
Flashing the firmware to the latest version on the asus website was easy without any issues.
Plenty of options and security, along with port forwarding.
Connection has not dropped once, or have I reset it since I received it which is a plus.

Cons: Packaging was very blatant that the product is refurbished. No ethernet cable, no wrapping, fingerprints on the product, and shipped from Jersey so it took a week to arrive.

Other Thoughts: Stand is pretty convenient and saves plenty of space. The design is sleek and the blue lights are not bright as other modems and routers. Definitely a solid product, and I am one of the lucky ones that received a working package.
No complaints really, this router compliments my SB6141 very well.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Disappointed

Pros: Looks nice good wired connection speed

Cons: wireless internet is horrible, wouldn't let all my wireless devices/pc connect. Extremely unreliable and slow wireless connection

Other Thoughts: disappointed that newegg doesn't allow refund

2 out of 5 eggsPoor wifi range

Pros: Good reputation and high scores at smallnetworks website
Compatible with DDWRT or Tomato

Cons: Sub-par wifi range
Limited stock firmware

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace/supplement my RT-N56U. While that router was quite nice, it did not support any of the 3rd party firmware. So I upgraded to this refurbed unit. Everything went great until I stepped more than 20' away from it. Both the 5 and 2.4ghz ranges are absolutely pathetic. In fact, I pick up a stronger signal on both bands from my RT-N56U which is 50' further (and two rooms removed) than this router - even though I'm standing right next to it.

I RMA'ed it and am waiting for the replacement. I suspect this might by why this one was sent back originally. Unfortunately NEWEGG WILL NOT ALLOW REFUNDS ON REFURBED UNITS - ONLY EXCHANGES. So hopefully the replacement will be better. If not, I'll RMA it again, and again, and again, and again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Erkme73,

Which firmware are you using? Can you check if the wireless connectivity still exists even if the modem is unplugged from the router? For product support, please reach out to me at cl-celeste@asus.com and include case#3514326 in the subject line. Also, please provide me the serial number of your router.
