5 out of 5 eggsBest Router Ever

Pros: I have had many routers. This is amazing. The stock firmware (based on Tomato) was great. The USB file sharing/NAS worked great. The Recovery Mode means it is impossible to brick the router with a bad flash. I tried DD-WRT and Shibby's TomatoUSB firmwares. I stuck with Shibby Tomato so I can run ad blocking script on router. Wireless has great range. The Gigabit LAN works flawlessly including WAN port.

Cons: Was too expensive(until now).

Other Thoughts: No not hesitate. You will be glad you got this. Using ALL-U-NEED ad blocking script so no one on network sees any banner ads.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router

Pros: - Very fast
- Great coverage
- Very good price when purchased refurbished

Cons: - None as of yet

Other Thoughts: Purchased to replace two routers that covered my home. This one does toe work of both, better. No dead spots and no sped issues, even with multiple streaming users. Running 4 networks (Home and Guest at 2.4 and 5 GHz).

Using as AP, with the FIOS router doing the routing.
That's a FIOS issue, though.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsSuperb

Pros: I bought this router twice, once as open box and once as refurb. Both are working excellent with great signal. Very reliable and I've gone through a month without needing a reboot. Bought the second one to use as repeater to get even better signal. The Asus interface is very easy to work with, and the router support DDWRT as well.

Cons: None so far.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't bother thinking about this

Pros: When it intermittently worked, had great signal and throughput

Cons: Consistently list it's configuration and then the wan port went.

5 out of 5 eggsSuperb long range router

Pros: Set up multiple WIFI SSIDs with a 5G, straight N and a guest network, as well as use both USB ports for a printer and external cloud storage. All juast plain work. In addition, the range on this puppy is far better than my old DDwrt modded Linksys54G, to the point that I dont even need a WIFI repeater in my garage 100ft away. All my dead spots are gone in the house, and a noticeable improvement in all uses. Never had a crash or forced reboot, software covers 99% of what the average user can/would want, or would get from DDWRT, for instance. Stream video & audio, move large files, no issues from the Router. Love it.

Cons: MIne worked best (coverage) standing up, so plugging the cables in onthe top is rather unsightly and ungainly. LEDs are insanely bright at night. I SHarpied them all to dull them a bit. But my Motorola Docis 3.0 modem is worse, so it's not just ASUS

3 out of 5 eggsGood but Some Flaws

Pros: Chock full of features. Fast.

Cons: Not a TRUE Dual Band router. I thought it was a concurrent dual band router (as advertised), but I soon found out that it was not.

Baby monitor running on 2.4Ghz frequency completely shutdown the wifi for all laptops, tablets, smartphones etc. in the house.

Fixed it by turning off the 2.4Ghz band on the router, so I'm limited on any legacy devices that I want wifi connections on.

If you live in an area that is saturated with wifi signals you may run into the same problem as I did with the baby monitor as the router doesn't run CONCURRENT (as advertised) dual band frequencies.

1 out of 5 eggsIt Died

Pros: Fast and long range. A lot of features..

Cons: Died within 3 Months. Light 1, 2, and internet stayed on even though nothing connected to it. Hard reset did not help.

1 out of 5 eggsHopefully I can find something better

Pros: Fast when it works

Cons: Requires reset at least every other day, sometimes more. It's becoming a nuisance. Started happening after the 14 day return period.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy refurbished. This was my 2nd refurb unit. The first one lost connection regularly after a couple days. The second one waited until after the return period. Once I find something better, I'll be tossing this one. Probably won't be buying anything from Asus ever again.

4 out of 5 eggsFirst impressions: Works great

Pros: -Strong wired data rates: Transferred an 8GB file in one minute between 2 computers on the network.

-Strong wireless rate: Boosted my old 12 mb down/14 mb up to 59mb down/24mb up.

-Sufficient wireless range: Enough to cover my 2 story house and basesment. Attic and backyard untested.

Cons: -Updating firmware froze. It asked me if I wanted to update firmware after I configured initial settings. I hit yes and the bar stopped moving at 79%. I waited for about 30-45 minutes after it stopped moving and no progress was made. I restarted the unit and it asked me for the initial settings again but the firmware was up to date. Was very worried throughout the procedure.

-Runs somewhat hot after only 30 minutes but my very old router that still works runs hot all the time too so maybe it doesn't matter.

Other Thoughts: I bought this unit because I wanted to upgrade my old router which was not gigabit and not wireless N ready (Linksys WRT54G2). I was very scared about buying new networking hardware as it seems hit or miss from many reviews I read of many different units. I was even more so scared of buying a refurbished unit which already had sub-optimal reviews.

I have had this unit for about 2 days and other than my issue with updating firmware listed in the cons section, it works fine. My network consists of 11 devices. I have a desktop and an 8 port unmanaged switch hooked up to this unit directly, 3 devices hooked up to the switch, and 6 wireless devices. They all have a solid connection.

I am loving the speeds on this thing. Files that used to take overnight transfers or inconvenient USB drive delivery only took a minute via LAN.

I'm really hoping this lasts considering my previous router has been in use for years and it's still operational. I will add to my review over time as this is definitely something that is evaluated over a long period, but my first impressions are positive.

To be safe though, I went ahead and got a 2 year extended warranty.
