4 out of 5 eggsAdequate home router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Provides good coverage; speed is good with multiple users

Cons: Crashes and shuts down every few weeks. Have to turn off, unplug, and restart it. So far it is only occasional, but if it gets worse it will likely be after the warranty runs out!

Other Thoughts: I'd give it a five rating, but for the crashes. They are concerning, but returns are a pain, so I'll just hope for the best...

5 out of 5 eggsGood buy for the price.

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Does what it says it will, easy to set up (took about 30-45 seconds so set everything with the laptop next to the modem and router so there was no downtime.), cheap, works without issue so far.

Cons: None really.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat AP for the money

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: strong signal, great value, easy configuration.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: This is a great device for the money. I installed this at my parent's house to improve the wi-fi coverage so we didn't have to move the cable demarq. It is a definite improvement over the older wireless G equipment they had and it is comparable in performance to a much more expensive D-Link DIR-655 unit that I have used.

I just have it set up for basic wi-fi use. I have not tested the WPS or qos features.

2 out of 5 eggsTP-Link WR941-ND Router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Easy set up, good notes on interface for each feature, very inexpensive when compared to other units.

Cons: Not very stable, been booting off all windows machines and my Mac doesn't seem to stay on either and keep searching for a network, can't get tech support from people who speak English.

Other Thoughts: Anytime you put something new on your network you're going to have bumps in the road; it's to be expected. I called no less than ten times to get tech support for the router, was disconnected at least six of them and the other four times I spoke with an oriental woman who could barely be understood in my language of English. It was very, very, frustrating. She said the firmware needed to be upgraded as it was very old... Just purchased the router a few days ago, seems the firmware is 18 months old on it. Phone call was terminated halfway in to the upgrade, frustrating again... Finally got back into the router and launched the backup .bin file so all my original settings would be installed.

Seems like the windows machines are a bit more stable however the Mac continues to "search for networks" at all times. Not sure I'm happy about this quite yet. The jury is still out on whether I like this router at all or not.

Would have been much better had I been able to speak with someone who spoke my language and could get my machines on line and stable; without being kicked off the router.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for checking out our Router.

We are glad to see that you have finally got this device up and running.

We have recently just moved our operations to a bigger building which also means we have upgraded and switched our phone systems. Unfortunately this also means that we have had some drops and reboots of the system to get things situated before Thanksgiving.

Things now seem to be up and pretty stable to continue normal operations among our Technical support.

This is also something that we have seen too as Windows may have a bit more stable connection due to some Mac devices. We have seen that upgrading the Macs tend to fix the issue.

If you have any issues then you can feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

5 out of 5 eggsAfter 4 years, a power surge finally brought it down

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Good speeds, always a strong connection, and low cost. Has stood the test of time! Very reliable.

Cons: None found.

Other Thoughts: I bought this as my primary router on July 27, 2009. It has been an absolute performer. I have never had any problems out of it. I recently had to replace it though, due to a power surge taking out many of my electronics. It lasted for over 4 years without a single problem, which is what I look for. I love quality products that can last, as I tend to have problems finding long lasting electronics. This is certainly quality, and I would recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate to my prior review

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Inexpensive, compared to competition.
Long range
Periodic firmware updates available
Responsive customer support

Cons: Somewhat unreliable
RP-SMA antenna connectors
No hard switch

Other Thoughts: I bought this router in November of 2009. At first it worked perfectly fine, but after about a year I started having connection problems. Connection would be lost then re-established, then repeat. A firmware update rectified this. But then another year later I had other connection problems that took some finagling to fix.

More recently, i began to experience signal drop-out again. I had upgrade to the latest firmware but this did not resolve the problem. I went back to the first version of the firmware, and even went to DD-WRT firmware, but this resulted in unsatisfactory results.

What seems to have fixed the problem was after doing a complete TP-LINK system reload, then upgrading to the latest firmware (3.13.9 Build 120201 Rel.54965n) afterward. I have been running it for a month now and no problems. Homedale is showing a much cleaner signal graph (not nearly as erratic as it was before).

I would appear that the firmware upgrade works best when done after a complete factor reset and manual application of original firmware, rather than upgrading directly from the previous firmware.

2 out of 5 eggsSeeking another brand

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Perfect reliable WIRED operation. Nice user interface. Good specs. Reasonable price. Seems to work OK with my Android smartphone when using WEP encryption.

Cons: I want WPA encryption, as advertised, not inferior WEP.
Cannot sustain reliable WPA connection to my Android smartphone, for more than a day. This has never worked reliably. I am too new to this medium to know the causes, so I simply say this router is INCOMPATIBLE with my phone, for WPA. Requires that I re-boot the router... after several hours or a day. I do NOT use wireless incessantly; rather, I return after several hours and try to connect; that's when it fails... requiring router re-boot. Cycling power on the phone is useless.
I set router to use to only one channel, in WPA details, to no avail. Only by downgrading to WEP do I seem to earn reliable, consistent performance.
Does anyone know what "chipset" this device uses? I want to steer clear of it with another brand of router.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi John,
We're sorry to hear you cannot use the WPA security on our router stably.
May I suggest you quick troubleshooting procedures?
1. Change the SSID to another one, so that the wireless network will be new to your cell phone;
2. Set the Wireless Security to WPA2-PSK, and the encryption is set to AES;
3. Try to connect your cell phone again;

If it still doesn't work, please feel free to let me know.
I would like to work with your and resolve the issue.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks great for a year or two, then...

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Easy set up.
Fairly short boot up time.
Excellent range.
Firmware updates provided.
Low cost.

Cons: Becomes unreliable over time.
Technical support is lacking.

Other Thoughts: I've had this router for 3 years. It worked great in the 1st year, but then I started having trouble with it in the 2nd year. The signal would drop out and not return. Eventually a firmware upgrade resolved that and the router worked fine for another year.

Now, it is suffering signal drop out again. It disappears from the WiFi list. Although it reappears after rebooting, the problem happens again 1-2 days later.

I upgraded to the latest firmware and this did not fix the problem. I downgraded to an earlier version of the firmware and instead of the router disappearing it would not provide a connection. I then discovered that DD-WRT has a version of the open source firmware for this router. I applied it and at first everything looked great. But after half a day, the signal bogged down and throughput slowed to a crawl. Rebooting solved it but the problem would return.

I conducted a signal test using a WiFi monitor tool (Homedale) and would observe wild fluctuations in signal strength instead of a nice steady line with mild fluctuations. It would rapidly waffle between -49dBm to -79dBm but also spike beyond -82dBm.

It looks to me like this router has had it. Networking technology has been on a rapid upswing, so after about 3-4 years it's probably time for a new WiFi router, but now performance benchmarks are so good that whatever you buy today should last you at least 5-6 years. I do NOT want to replace my router at 2-3 years, so it makes more sense to go with one that costs more but will be more reliable.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Gary,
Thank you for using TP-LINK products.
We're sorry to hear the router becomes unstable after 3 years.
To make the WiFi stabler, I suggest you change the Channel Width to 20MHz; and if possible, set the wireless mode to G.

I hope the above suggestions help you.

4 out of 5 eggsWish I read things

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Fast

Cons: No ethernet ports
WiFi Only

Other Thoughts: I'd love to plug my 360 into this guy without paying the man $50 for the adapter. Wish I read more about the spec before just buying the cheapest

1 out of 5 eggsVery disappointed

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR941ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, 3 detachable antennas, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Good range and fast connection. Easy to setup via the website interface,

Cons: Drops clients randomly like laptops and cell phones. No matter what I do, I cannot reconnect to the router unless I reboot it. Also when this happens you can no longer bring up the web interface admin site for the router, it just won't respond.

Other Thoughts: I was very disappointed about this router dropping clients and not being able to rejoin unless I reboot the router. After this happened multiple times I gave up. It had the latest firmware already installed. If it hadn't been for this issue I would keep it. Now I have to pay return shipping which sucks, for this defective product. When it dropped clients like the ipad and laptops, the others that were still connected did work.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Todd,
We're sorry to hear the router drops the connection randomly.

If you didn't return the router and would like to give the router another chance, may I provide you some quick troubleshooting procedures?
1. Use a free software, inSSIDer, to detect the idle channel and use it on your router;
2. Change the Channel Width to 20MHz;

And we can also schedule a call back service to work with you to resolve this issue.
