5 out of 5 eggsEXCELLENT inexpensive router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Amazing performance from a router in this segment using DD-WRT. Forcing 20+20mhz in wireless settings with no other changes nets repeatable speed tests in the 90-95mbit range! The WAN port is limited to 100mbit, there is nothing more to ask. Extremely stable, stays cool in an entertainment center, and range is more than adequate for an average to large size household. Handles 1080p streaming to multiple devices at the same time with no hiccups if the internet can keep up and gaming always has perfect latency.

Cons: The out of box firmware on this router is lacking in a few areas but for the basic user is more than enough.

Other Thoughts: At this price point it is hard to not recommend this guy for the average user with under 100mbit internet. For anyone with 100mbit+ or a need for extreme range, you will want an AC router for maximum performance.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat bridge

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: so i got this as a freebee with my surfboard modem. wasn't sure what i was going to do with it till i realized ps4 built in wifi blows. so i plugged it in to my comp changed the gateway number checked an unchecked some settings and bam works as the wifi for my ps4 ( also known as an extender )

Cons: can't speak for typical use but none as an extender

5 out of 5 eggsMisleading Appearance

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Cost efficient, I received it for free bundled with a new modem

Amazing range, I receive one bar which is still lightning fast connection a building and a half away while walking my dog

Great speeds, the Comcast modem didn't work well with our phones or PS4 but this router has fixed that problem and everything seems about as fast as a wired connection

Great strength through our walls and buildings

Hasn't reset or heated up on me yet

Cons: Old and outdated appearance

Other Thoughts: The router may look like a little cheap backup or in my case placeholder, but after using it for two weeks, I will likely not get a replacement router as this one is working so well.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router for the money

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: This router exceeded my expectations! Setup was a breeze!

Cons: -Cannot turn off separate bands (b,g,n) have to choose b,g or b,g,n. Not a option for just N or Just G.

- Had to tweak the settings to get full speed out of the router (50mbps) from my ISP.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Performance

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Inexpensive, Easy to Setup

Cons: Wireless Throughput is lacking - Range is moderate, I have Mbps x Mbps internet speed and have never been able to obtain more then 20Mbps download on wireless. Also, even my hardwired PC has latency issue during extreme game play.

3 out of 5 eggsEgg on my face...

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: When it has been freshly rebooted, it is great - provided that the configuration is right. I had to learn a few things before I got the settings right. Also, TP-link has provided updated firmware. The web interface seems quite usable.

Cons: Unfortunately, the updated firmware does not help with my primary problem. This router needs to be rebooted frequently. As time and packets go by, the connection speed falls off until finally it's limping along at 1 Mb/s. This can happen in an hour or take several days - I have not figured out a pattern. Rebooting always helps, but never solves this problem. Perhaps I still have more configuration work to do, but I've put in a lot of time over the past 6 months, and I feel I'm done with this device.

Other Thoughts: I also tried dd-wrt, which was OK, but for this device did not seem to be able to provide access to the highest speeds. Oh well. It came along with a cable modem that I was buying anyway, so it could be worse. I hate replacing a device I bought because it turned out not to be what I needed.

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: No issues with ethernet.

Cons: Read the other bad reviews, I am right there with them. I tried to upgrade from an ancient WRT 54g and I'm going to go back to it. I lose signal all the time, and the range is worse in general. The TP-Link CS responses say to download drivers for WR841ND, not WR841N which has it's own drivers so that is troublesome.

Frankly I don't understand how this thing averages 4 eggs. Must be people in studios or something.

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid and stable and has a modest range

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: It is very stable and no trouble at all. Also, no random wireless drops.
It runs DD-WRT easily.

It can be competitive for wireless range if set atop a tall bookshelf or on a wall-shelf; and, also see cons.

The onboard CPU is VERY fast, so it can do the AES and routing tasks at optimal speed. That is a great bonus that I had not expected when I purchased it.

Cons: Not a good performance for range; however, with a more ideal (much higher) placement it isn't bad.

Other Thoughts: I've got a pair of these and I do like them. There was momentarily some trouble with the range; however, I got some shelves like you'd set a little clock or other item for display, up high enough to position the wireless router for better range. Then I had to get sound Ethernet couplers because my cords were too short.
That is not necessarily bad news!
The good news is that, after that little bit of effort, the wireless situation has covered just as much area as the older high power system it replaced, I've good good steady throughput at very fast speeds, and it is completely stable.

After that bit of placement hijinks, the usual throughput is 90% of a 100 megabit connection.

I wish I had bought the slightly more expensive version that has the removable antennas, removed them, and put on some 19" antennas. One such system, still upon a high shelf, could do what it takes two of these to do. I already had the long cable in place, so my experience, this time, was really no trouble at all.

5 out of 5 eggsFree!

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Fast Wireless Router, Firewall and Wired Router (a few ports). It works and does everything Its suppose to.
I got it when I bought my "ARRIS / Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem".

Cons: I don't need it as I got a gaming wireless router. I don't know if a gaming router its faster, but it costs more!
