5 out of 5 eggsBest Bang for the Buck

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: -Fantastic price-to-performance ratio
-Easy setup
-Wall mountable
-Great wireless range, even with iPhones and iPads
-The 300 mbps wireless speed makes this PERFECT as a wireless bridge

Cons: The RJ-45 connections are only 100 mbps, but if you're only using this for internet connectivity that isn't even close to that speed then this won't be a bottleneck for a majority of the people reading this. Not worth knocking an egg off, and not something to really complain about for the price.

I had some minor issues with setting up the wireless SSID and channel number when I was using Firefox, but using Internet Explorer worked fine. Just keep this in mind if you run into issues with the setup utility that it may just be the browser you are using. I had a similar experience with Netgear about a decade ago. Again, not worth knocking an egg off the score.

Other Thoughts: Installed one of these at a friend's house, and also currently using two of these in my church (one as an AP and another as a wireless bridge). It's working flawlessly, and FAR exceeds the performance and reliability we were getting from Netgear and Linksys. TP-Link is quickly becoming my go-to resource for home and small office networking equipment.

5 out of 5 eggsConnected

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Great price. Very easy to install as part of a network. Makes an excellent range extender by running a hard wire from main router to this home router. Access speed and connection are great with no disconnects so far.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: For the price of this router it works just as well as the more expensive ones available on the market.

1 out of 5 eggsLack of TPLink Support

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Prompt 3-day UPS delivery: you'll be happier than if you choose the 'smartpost/free' shipping. The router powered up, and connected to the modem using provided mini-CD software. That was the end of anything good as far as dealing with a TPlink product, or the company.

Cons: Manufacturer support is non-existent. Newegg delivered but TPLink can't play catch; they dropped the product support ball from day one. I read all the directions before installing the router, before attempting to log into the router admin interface to configure and secure the router and LAN. (Everyone should always Read The Fine Manual 1st). Myeffort immediately resulted in a screen that proclaimed, "you are not authorized to access this router". When I purchase a router, I'm authorized to access the blasted thing. Just for grins (joke) I tried all the tech tricks I learned in many years in the service world but nothing worked; can't teach a dead dog any tricks. I then searched the TPLink website product support but found no useful 'knowledge' applying to this problem/error. Searching the web resulted in finding several reports of TPLink router owners discussing this problem, with no fixes found. After 2 days wasted in trying, I fired a detailed description of my attempts to gain admin access to the router in an email off to TPLink support. After getting an auto-reply, I waited, waited and waited some more. I finally received a generic response containing pasted copies of instructions in the owner's manual, including links to TPLink's site. TPLink apparently doesn't employ many English speaking/understanding CSR's in their support section. After several frustrating exchanges with TPLink support, and receiving the same nonsensical information in each successive email, I requested an escalation. No response. I waited some more. I finally received a TPLink survey wanting to get my opinion on TPLink's support in the case; joy. I sent them another detailed response and requested again for the case to be escalated or for a product exchange and suggested the CSR be re-trained. I received another email from the same rep that was cc'd to several other TPLink reps, requesting details regarding my ISP information, etc, none of which was their business or has anything to do with logging in manually to configure the router. I went through 2 more weeks of this useless, repetitive process. Here, the long story ends; I will never again buy another product from TPLink and strongly recommend that others be forewarned; this was a mostly likely a simple problem, probably a manufacturing defect. TPLink's only suggestion was to return the product to my 'shopping centre' sic. TPLink has no sense of continuity. I"ve learned my lesson on this purchase and am going to donate this router to research. Maybe someone can benefit by writing a working admin interface for it. When a current product is reduced to half price, there is an obvious reason, it's either junk or you won't get any support from the manufacuturer.

Other Thoughts: TPLink email customer support is worthless; they don't understand English and don't refer to previous emails on ongoing support issues. I've never had a more time-wasting, frustrating customer service experience. Lack of TPLink product support is not Newegg's fault, but Newegg should drop this manufacturer. Don't throw your money away; always buy a good quality product from a reputable company with a US corporate address, who will give you responsive, interactive and understandable support. This was a painful, tedious exercise that the manufacturer inflicted; if they could read what was sent to them, they could understand the problem. I normally don't like writing or typing unless it is for something good, since I have to do it 1-handed from my wheelchair (not whining, just not what I'd rather be doing), but this time I've made an exception for TPLink. I'm keeping my promise made to TPLink in order to warn other potential Newegg customers/owners away from a company that doesn't care about good products or offer any useful product support.

5 out of 5 eggsVer: 9 Not Compatible with DDWRT

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Stable throughput and full of features for the interface given from a bargain router.

Cons: Version 9 is now being shipped. This version is not compatible with DDWRT. I bought the router for this purpose and sadly now I have to return it.

Other Thoughts: For its price, its a good option. I have not had it long enough to test the stability over the long run.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: No issues at all, second one I have bought and they work great.

Cons: No complaints, works as advertised.

Other Thoughts: TP-Link makes very good routers at less than half the cost of the so-called "big names" in routers. Seems like the whole world has gone crazy, certain other brands are charging 3 and 4 times as much as they were 3 years ago with no justification for the price increases. Save your money, get a TP-Link. Worst case is if it goes bad you can replace it for way cheaper than those other insane companies. There seems to be this big trend toward huge price increases by many companies because more and more naive people are getting on the internet all the time and companies are taking advantage of their lack of tech knowledge and doubling, tripling, quadrupling prices on things with no good cause.

1 out of 5 eggsunreliable

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: speeds were fine

Cons: The speed were fine on this modem and my devices were able to connect to the the modem itself just fine but every couple hours, one device or another would lose the ability to connect to the internet. the wifi was connected but no internet. Sometimes rebooting would help fix it, sometimes restarting devices would help. sometimes nothing would help.
This was the brand new version 9 and it just wasnt reliable at all.

3 out of 5 eggsChances are against you in 2014

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: I got the newer version 9 router which is a let down. It severely restricts the usefulness of the device. If it were me I would not purchase this router. It is more and more likely that will receive this version as time goes on unfortunately. I can wait and hope that it is fixed, or have a paper weight.

3 out of 5 eggsNot compatible with DD-WRT

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: N/A

Cons: Beware- they are shipping v9.0 hardware of this model, so it is NOT compatible with DD-WRT.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for your review.

You are correct as V9 is our latest version, and it doesn't look like they've developed OpenWRT or DD-WRT for this version yet.

I'm sure with time their developers will be able to do so.

Let me know if you have any issues or concerns.

Best Regards!
