5 out of 5 eggsEasy to set up.

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: Easy to set up gigabit switch. Matches well with the Archer-C7 I purchased several months earlier.

Cons: None thus far.

Other Thoughts: I have read several reviews describing a high pitched whine coming from this unit. I am happy to report that no such sound can be heard from it as it sits atop a shelving unit in my entertainment center. I use this to connect several gaming consoles (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Ouya) and my DVR to my home network.

Pros: - Is a switch

Cons: - No gigabit
- makes a really high pitched noise

Other Thoughts: Do not do work in the same room as this switch, it will drive you mad

2 out of 5 eggsOk product for the hard of hearing

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: Reliable speed
Low Power

Cons: Makes a high pitch whine. With the computer on it can't be heard but when the PC is off the whine is very very annoying.
The switch appears different then what Newegg shows. Newegg is showing an older version (v5) while the one I got is the newer version (v6).

Other Thoughts: Though the appearance isn't a big deal some people might get confused.
I consider the high pitch sound a flaw though some people might not be bothered by it. I will be driven from the room by the sound and so I will try to find a fix or return it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little switch!

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: * 16 Gigabit switching capacity
* 8 ports
* 9k Jumbo frames
* Cool & Silent

Exactly what I needed to add ports to my Gigabit WIFI router!

It's BLACK! matches my router well.

Cons: I don't see any cons @ $20!

It's a SWITCH!
It Works!
It has 8 Gb ports!

Cons? Ok! it didn't get you a discount on internet service!

Other Thoughts: I like the cables attaching at the back of the switch!
Most desktop / wall mount routers have ports on the back , seems logical to attach the connecting cables on the back of the switch.

If you have rack mounted devices then front ports make sense.

The power connector is on the back of the case!
Not the side!
Not the front!

5 out of 5 eggsSurprisingly durable for the price

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: My parents bought a new house, which was pre-wired with cat5e. So obviously it needed a switch where all the wires were run. Unfortunately, the builder wasn't smart, and ran them all outside to one place. No alcove to put the switch in, or anything. Ended up that the switch, and all the ethernet cables, would need to be run into the little plastic box that Time Warner puts on the house for the ground connection/splitter for the satellite guys. Now, the house is in the Sand Hills region of NC, which means it gets really hot, and really humid in the summer for weeks at a time, and gets moderately cold in the winter.

I figured I would get a cheap switch for them for the time being, until a longer-term solution can be found. I didn't expect the switch to last long in a little plastic box in the sun, in 95-100 degree heat, and humid conditions. And it must have been even hotter in the box in the direct sunlight. And it certainly wouldn't survive the cold temps too..

To my great surprise, it is still working, a year and a half later. It has now survived 2 north carolina summers, and one winter. And it still works beautifully. It has never had to be rebooted.

I'm frankly shocked by the durability of this little switch. I think when it eventually does die, and needs replaced, I'll replace it with one of the business class TP-Link switches with the lifetime warranty. So yeah, if you need a cheap, but durable switch that can handle all kinds of conditions, this seems to be a surprisingly good choice.

Cons: None to speak of, it works like a champ in conditions it was definitely not made for.

3 out of 5 eggsMisleading pictures and annoying squealing

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: Worked fine, was fairly priced, would've served the purpose I needed for it well if not for some issues which I'll get to.

Cons: First off, the packaging and the pictured unit looked nothing like what I saw on Newegg. I expected a rectangular switch box with status lights on the front, but what I received was a switch with this exact same model number that now has a glossy black top, is very rounded and has status lights on the top. I don't care for this style of switch (huge dust magnet with the gloss black finish), but was willing to overlook this fact if not for the next issue.

The power supply makes a horrid high pitched squeal! I'm not sure what frequency it is, but it's high so some people may not hear it but I can and it drives me nuts. I'm sure it's the cheap coils they used in their eco power pack, it makes the noise regardless of what is plugged into the switch and no matter where I plug it in. I found it annoying enough that I could not stand to use it in my room where I work all day.

I intended to replace a very old Linksys 5-port switch I've used for ages without issue that I finally just ran out of ports on but I was not willing to listen to that squealing all day long. I found someone selling a switch like my old Linksys and paid a few bucks for it and it worked like a charm. I also disliked that the TP-LINK had no status or Act/Col. lights, just a plain light saying the connection was active. Very dumbed down from the old school and more professional stuff but I won't take an egg off for that.

Other Thoughts: I would've returned it, but after all fees and shipping it comes out even worse than just keeping it. I would not recommend this switch at all, the description misleads from what you're actually getting and if the coils are whining on the power pack when it's brand new I have serious concerns of how long it will last. It's a shame, because I specifically wanted a reliable 8 port switch that had the ports and power plug in the back. Many options exist if you want the power in the back and the ethernet ports in the front but that doesn't work for my setup.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well / had mine 2 years

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: It is a gigabit switch that works well. What more can I say? I needed more LAN ports so I plugged this switch into my router and now I have more ports. Mine stays fairly cool, but I only put it to modest use.

Cons: The case is plastic. If you need a metal case this is not the model for you. The power it supplied by a "wall wart," so take that into consideration.
