2 out of 5 eggsSave yourself the trouble, get a different adapter

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wireless N300 High Gain USB Adapter, 300Mbps, Dual 3dBi External Antennas, w/WPS Button, IEEE 802.1b/g/n, WEP/WPA/WPA2

Pros: Worked for about a year

Cons: Worked for about a year.

Other Thoughts: I have three of these at my house connected to mining computers and up until recently, have worked relatively well.

I started having problems with one of them about 4 months ago where it would randomly and suddenly lose connection to my router. It would reconnected after 30 min or a reboot of the system. It was annoying, but continued to function.

About a week ago it had its last go at the internet. Upon randomly disconnecting I waited my typical 30 min and it didn't reconnect. I gave it more time and after 4 hours I decided to restart the mining rig. The hardware inside was so buggy it prevented the computer from shutting down AND booting up. It would sit at the shutdown screen indefinitely as well as the windows load screen. When I hardstopped the PC I'd get a bluescreen. At the time I didn't realize it was the network device doing this until I unplugged it. I tried it on a different PC and it recognized hardware installed, but refused to recognize the name of the device. I then pronounced the adapter dead.

Then last night the EXACT same thing happened to a different computer of mine... so now 2 of the 3 of these are dead. All 3 are almost exactly a year old from right now.

When they worked they seemed to work ok... just dont expect them to last too long. I'd look at a different device to save you some time.

3 out of 5 eggsokay for the price

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wireless N300 High Gain USB Adapter, 300Mbps, Dual 3dBi External Antennas, w/WPS Button, IEEE 802.1b/g/n, WEP/WPA/WPA2

Pros: Price point was good for an n300 wifi USB adapter. It has antennas.

Cons: Included driver Utility for installation did not work with my Win 7 SP1 install. The setup.exe(s) would just hang at certain points and not install. I had to download a different driver than what was included on the mini cdr. I used the Realtek RTL8192CU Wireless Lan 802.11N USB 2.0 network adapter.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wireless N300 High Gain USB Adapter, 300Mbps, Dual 3dBi External Antennas, w/WPS Button, IEEE 802.1b/g/n, WEP/WPA/WPA2

Pros: For the $20 it cost, it does a helluva better job than the last $20 adapter I was using(NetgearN300).
Excellent signal strength from 50 feet away, through two walls and a floor.

Cons: Shorter Cord than I would of preferred.
Not a huge fan of the white color.

Other Thoughts: Very pleased with the performance so far.

4 out of 5 eggsSeems to work well

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wireless N300 High Gain USB Adapter, 300Mbps, Dual 3dBi External Antennas, w/WPS Button, IEEE 802.1b/g/n, WEP/WPA/WPA2

Pros: Marginally better reception than my laptop's built-in Dell 1705 wireless card

Cons: Somewhat bulky, but I knew that before purchase.

Other Thoughts: Plan to use for a desktop with no wireless. When I tested this, I got better bars (5 vs. 2) than my Dell laptop's built-in 1705 wireless card, but the speed was limited by my router/ISP. It worked fine with no difficulties installing on Windows 8.1. I did NOT use the install CD. Reception with this unit may be slightly better than an inexpensive USB adapter. I cannot comment on longevity due to only two weeks of ownership. I would rate this as somewhat better than a cheap USB adapter, but not outstanding.

4 out of 5 eggsAfter driver from website, it is perfect!

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wireless N300 High Gain USB Adapter, 300Mbps, Dual 3dBi External Antennas, w/WPS Button, IEEE 802.1b/g/n, WEP/WPA/WPA2

Pros: 100% signal at all times ( I am one floor up and roughly 30ft away from the router.)

No drops or loss in signal after updating.

Looks pretty cool and comes with a fairly long USB cable (would be better in black, though)

Cons: Before downloading the driver from their website I was losing signal frequently and it was rather annoying. It would just... turn off and then come back on after about 25-30 seconds. I had all the power state options off.

Other Thoughts: Worth the money! It didn't take long to fine the new driver on their website and after that, it was a breeze!

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wireless N300 High Gain USB Adapter, 300Mbps, Dual 3dBi External Antennas, w/WPS Button, IEEE 802.1b/g/n, WEP/WPA/WPA2

Pros: Price for Performance
Personally, I like the aesthetic design of the unit

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Initial install would not take. After launching the setup file and clicking next on the WELCOME TO INSTALL screen, machine would crash to BSOD during SEARCHING FOR CARD sequence. Did this with both the in-the-box CD driver and the downloaded driver from TPLink. Required a manual driver install. Not a huge deal, but something to be aware of.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat, until you try downloading a 10GB game...

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wireless N300 High Gain USB Adapter, 300Mbps, Dual 3dBi External Antennas, w/WPS Button, IEEE 802.1b/g/n, WEP/WPA/WPA2

Pros: When it works, it's fantastic. At a distance of 40 feet, I have 270-300 theoretical, and at least 60 mbps downstream (limited by ISP) at all times...*until* I try installing a game from Steam, etc. After about ten minutes at full speed, this USB adapter will invariably fall into the same-old "limited connectivity" that all USB adapters seem to be plagued by; they simply can't dissipate heat effectively enough to maintain stable long-term downloads, and this model is unfortunately no exception. If you're a gamer, forget USB adapters and get a PCI adapter with accompanying antennae/extension cables (with antennae behind your PC, if your router is in the opposite direction, forget about it).

Cons: see above

5 out of 5 eggsPulls in Very Strong Signal

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wireless N300 High Gain USB Adapter, 300Mbps, Dual 3dBi External Antennas, w/WPS Button, IEEE 802.1b/g/n, WEP/WPA/WPA2

Pros: This adapter works flawlessly and is much faster than the built-in adapter on my laptop that was heading south on me. The pop-up antennas are interesting, but it pulls in the signal just as well with them in the down position at most distances so I often don't bother touching them. This is a lot larger than a "stick" type of adapter and it has a USB cord which allows for optimal placement. The tradeoff of size versus capabilities and convenience seems worth it to me, though it will take up a little extra room in your bag and won't be as convenient as the "stick" style if you have the laptop on your lap or somewhere where you can't just set it down on something, though that probably isn't a regular occurrence for many people and how and where they use their laptop, but is worth considering. On the plus side is I always get a strong signal that doesn't drop, and it wakes up without any fuss or crankiness.

Cons: None, knew that it was an external connection before purchasing.

Other Thoughts: It comes with a mini-disc which is a bit weird these days, but I didn't use it as I just downloaded the latest driver and used Windows networking and installed only the driver and didn't use their little management utility and everything worked perfectly and hasn't had any hiccups since I got it.

There is a rather large activity light on it just above the USB connection that isn't too bright but can be a bit annoying if the unit is placed so you catch it out of the corner of your eye, but repositioning or tape can fix that.

Pros: easy set up, great speed when it works
