1 out of 5 eggsWorthless

Pros: Cheap - but you get what you pay for

Cons: It stopped working within a month of getting it. All the packaging has been thrown out so it cannot be returned. I have tried to reset it a few times...the lights are on, but nobody is home!
Luckily this was to be our 3rd router to handle the kids bandwidth demands, so the other 2 are able to carry the load.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: No pros as the router worked for maybe 10 minutes after spending 2 hours attempting to setup.

Cons: - Dual Band doesn't work
- Help tips on the router page not helpful.
- All help tips are restart the router and if that doesn't work, call Support
- Sup[port unavailable each of the 3 times attempted to call

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this router

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
We apologize for any inconvenience caused.
The key procedure to setup a router is to power off your modem and power back on.
Then the router should be plug-n-play.

Regarding to the dual band issue, please be sure your wireless clients support both 2.4GHz band and 5GHz band. Otherwise most devices can only see and connect to the 2.4GHz network.

If you need further assistance, please feel free to let me know. We will schedule a call back service with you.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat while it worked

Pros: -Dual band
-Inexpensive

Cons: -Horrible Technical support. After 2 phone calls and over 1 1/2 hours on the phone, the extremely unhelpful staff asked for me to call back.
- Added this router as second router to my network and for some reason, can't access router web management portal via ethernet, but can through wirless (even ISP tech was confused by this)
-Wireless devices continue to lose connection and sometimes comes up with invalid ip to router (the one that starts with 169)
- Have to constantly reboot to connect with wireless devices

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
We apologize for any inconvenience caused.
It seems the router could not give out IP address properly.
Could you please check if you disabled the DHCP server on the router?
Another quick solution is to reset the router to factory default.

In most cases, the router is plug and play.
If you need further assistance or a call back from our senior engineers, please feel free to let me know.

2 out of 5 eggsCan't go the distance

Pros: Nice looking

Cons: Distance is short. Would not work 75' in house. Updated new software and contacted manufacture no help. Dropped connections, I returned.

Other Thoughts: Have cheap Cisco and it does better.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Yota,
We're sorry to hear the router could not give you expected range.
I think it's a special case. Could you please give TP-LINK another chance?

If you need to RMA with us, we could provide you a replacement. Please feel free to let me know.

3 out of 5 eggsInexpensive Dual Band AP

Pros: Inexpensive, Dual-Band N, easy to set up, no problems with Android, Apple and Linux systems connecting to the AP, guest network

Cons: Can't run any open source software like DD-WRT or Tomato. DLNA software near useless-it won't support Samsung products as clients and a lot of video formats.

Other Thoughts: It is advertised as being able to run DD-WRT, but that is currently not available for the WDR3500. It seems like since the DD-WRT runs on the WDR3600, TPLink could make a very small effort and get it to run on the WDR3500 like they advertise.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
Thank you for reviewing the WDR3500.
Yes, the WDR3500 doesn't support DD-WRT. Only WDR4300 and WDR3600 do.
We appreciate your suggestions and would consider it on our future products.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Great

Pros: Cheap and dual band.

Cons: Poor range.

Other Thoughts: I have a 3-story townhouse and the router is on the 2nd floor in a corner. There is poor signal strength on the opposite corner on the 1st and 3rd floors... Straight line distance from router to device can't be more than about 40 feet.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
We are sorry to hear the router could not give you expected range.
For a 3-story house, we suggest you use powerline adapters to extend the wireless range in vertical direction.
And may I know if the speed becomes slower or the wireless connection just drops at more than 40 feet?
Your feedback is valuable to us.

We can discuss on this issue and provide you a solution. Please feel free to let me know.

2 out of 5 eggsBe weary

Pros: Decent price for a dual band

Cons: For whatever reason, a netbook of mine will not pick it up and my other devices are only able to recognize one of the bands at a time. Ive look into the other reviews and noticed the firmware update available. After downloading the update, when I try to run it, it is not an executable file and I have no way of knowing how to make it (.bin file) work. So, I called the tp-link tech support to try and get some help. In the end I hung up on them because I CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE OUTSOURCED EMPLOYEES THEY KEEP ON HAND. The forums are of no help either. I how you reply to this with more insight on how to make your stuff work properly

Other Thoughts: Its a risk buying this. Do it at your own risk

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the router.

For the wireless issue, only DUAL BAND wireless devices can recognize and connect to the 5GHz wireless network.
For example new laptops that support IEEE802.11 ABGN or cell phones like iPhone 5.
Old devices may not be able to support 5GHz wireless, such as iPhone 4S.

To upgrade the router, we need to access the device managment page, go to System Tools --> Firmware Upgrade to upgrade the bin file.

If you need further info, please feel free to contact me. So that we will have our senior US-based engineer call you back.

We really hope that you will check out TP-Link products in the future and we encourage you to reach out to us if you are having any further issues.

1 out of 5 eggsLook Elsewhere

Pros: 1. It's cheap.
2. Dual Band.
3. Others seem to have had better luck

Cons: Worked for 2 days. Locked up the 3rd. Then almost every day after that. As in it wouldn't even respond to pings, or able to login locked up. A power cycle and it would be back for a few hours. Tried a reset to factory defaults but same issues. Went back to my old Zyxel with no issues and sent this one back for RMA. Spend the extra money and get a better Buffalo or Linksys dual band router.

Other Thoughts: As others have mentioned, when you set ip reservations you only get IP and MAC. There is no custom field to enter a name associated with the IP and MAC. This is the case with all fields involving ip addresses and MAC. What kind of router doesn't allow for comments?! Also, this router is not compatible with DDWRT just FYI.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Jfitzi,

We are sad to see that this device didn't work for you. We have released a new firmware last month that tries to fix and address most of these issues:
http://www.tp-link.com/us/support/download/?model=TL-WDR3500&version=V1#tbl_j

We understand your concern with the lack of a comment box on the ip and MAC addresses. We enjoy your feedback and getting data like this to see what concerns our users. This is something hat we will definitely look into. You are also correct as DD-WRT isn't supported on this device; as well as OpenWRT. You will see that our other dual band models WDR3600 and WDR4300 are actually compatible with both firmwares.

Thanks again for checking out our products and we hope you will be able to play with our newer products in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsReally love it!

Pros: -Looks good
-Light
-Strong signal
-Cheap
-Great and easy to use software interface

Cons: Can be a little tricky for those who don't know much about computers and networking

Other Thoughts: Works perfectly! I had some problems with it the first week. At first, I thought it was broken.Turns out, it wasn't broken at all! I contacted TP-Link support online and they solved my problem. If your connection drops often on some computers, you just need to pick another channel and set the channel width to 20 mhz. Now my wireless network is faster than ever and working flawlessly! TP-LINK is my prime choice when it comes to networking accessories.
