5 out of 5 eggsGreat OpenWRT compatibility

Pros: Runs OpenWRT Barrier Breaker flawlessly. USB ports and dual radios are awesome. I use these to build wireless mesh networks for general purpose campus access where the 5ghz is used as a back haul network. I also have a deployment of 5 of these being used as Kismet drones for a WIDS/WIPS system.

Cons: No volume discounts, I have purchased 15 of these.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Router for basic needs

Pros: - Arrived quickly and well packed from Newegg.
- Dedicated on/off switch
- Dedicated Wi-Fi on switch.
- Dual 2.4/5 GHz band
- “TP-Link Tether” application. This application, one installed on my iPhone allowed me to see on my mobile device who is currently using the router for internet access ( listing: device name, MAC and IP address). You can also sort all your wireless devices as belonging to “parents” and “children”. You can block “children” from browsing during certain times of the day or allow them only on certain websites. There is ability to block clients to straight from the iPhone. The setting section allows to turn the wireless radio and guest network on/off or even to see your stored wi fi passwords. Additionally, your mobile device must be connected to router to use TP-Link Tether app.
- Setup was quick.
- Decent signal strength.

Cons: - The unit is big. Its 9x5.5 inches.
- WPS protected setup is enabled by default. While WPS protected setup makes things easier to setup for novices, it is also increased security risk if you live in an apartment or a dorm.
- Lack of ac technology. But this should be expected at this price point.
- Hard to get it to work in AP mode.

Other Thoughts: - I would recommend this router if you are to someone who is looking for a fairly basic double band, fairly fast rounder for your home. This device will not disappoint in this task.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Performance in two different environments

Pros: Handles multiple devices in a WiFi rich environment extremely well.
Rarely noticeable loss of signals or performance issues
Handled 2 laptops, table, 2 phones, 2 tvs all over WiFi. Gigabit LAN exceptional on PS3 for YouTube, online game-play and NetFlix.

Easily configured and upgraded firmware.
Far more customizable options than expected.

Cons: Few related to the router itself. Having issues when turning hiding network on some Android devices but that is an Android issue and not router/WiFi specific.

Other Thoughts: Not to specs
I own two routers, The TP-LINK TL-WDR3500 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router and the TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps,

Both units show the same specifications in the manufacturers comparison, minus the 5Ghz channels(accounting for the additional 300mbs), Gigabit Ethernet and "detachable" antenna on the WDR3500.

The following tests were performed with both routers:
5Ghz turned off on WDR3500(should be same specs each, per MFG now via WiFi(Lan Still gigabit on WDR3500))
WiFi Channel selection set to Auto
WiFi surfing(searching and viewing) via Laptop on an extremely large database containing data files, video, images and audio files.
Direct line of sight to router under ten feet
Both routers against the wall and antenna directly UP

Test Environment #1
12+ competing WiFi signals in apartment structure.
NetFlix streaming via LAN Cat5 cable

WR841: WiFi speeds were erratic and unacceptable(picture and data intensive)
NetFlix took over a minute to jump from 480P to full 1080 when initiated via LAN.
Adding in additional WiFi stream to phone and Tablet proved to slow Laptop connection drastically.

WDR3500: WiFi very snappy and responsive. Minimal delay or lag perceived.
NetFlix extremely responsive, 480P immediate stream experienced for under 10 seconds and snaps to 1080P with no lag for remaining stream(Via LAN(gigabit)).
Adding in WiFi connection to Phone and Tablet showed no noticeable delay to ANY connection.

Test Environment #2
20+ competing WiFi signals in apartment structure.
NetFlix streaming via WiFi now(LAN connection in last environment, all devices in WiFi mode now))

WR841: WiFi speeds were even more erratic and unacceptable under same tests as above(picture and data intensive).
NetFlix took close to two minutes to jump from 480P to full 1080 when initiated.
Adding in additional WiFi stream to phone, Tablet and additional NetFlix WiFi stream to TV proved to slow ALL connections drastically(more than Environment #1(which was not as WiFi intensive).

WDR3500: WiFi very snappy and responsive. Minimal delay or lag perceived.
NetFlix(WiFi) extremely responsive, 480P immediate stream experienced for under 10-20 seconds and snaps to 1080P with no lag for remaining stream.
Adding in new Phone, Tablet, Laptop and Additional TV(ALL systems WiFi with one wall now separating new TV and New Laptop) proved extremely responsive and only small noticeable delays in signal response(lag) while surfing and watching videos

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Range even worse service

Pros: Looks pretty.

Cons: The range on this router is awful! I live in a ranch house and have the router in a central location. The signal in any other room in the house besides the one it is located in is terrible. We frequently lose the signal all together on our laptop, Ipad and cell phones.

I contacted TP-Link and they suggested I buy better antennas?!?!?! Why would I or should I have to do that?

Based on their service or lack there of I would not purchase on of their products again!

1 out of 5 eggsTP-LINK TL-WDR3500

Pros: Turns on

Cons: 1. worse connection than my $10 netgear router.
2. cannot use 2.4 ghz connection for online gaming because i disconnect out and reconnect in every other minute.
3. forced to used 5 ghz connection which either works or it doesn't depending on how many people are using the 2.4ghz connection. (maximum 4 other people)

Other Thoughts: - worst router i've ever bought and my last router had to be reset atleast once a day, but produced a stable connection all day long.
- will probably never buy TP-Link products again and make sure none of my friends do.
- I never write reviews.

2 out of 5 eggsMeh signal

Pros: Easy to set up
Quick connection

Cons: Pathetic signal

Other Thoughts: I got this to replace a TP-LINK 841N router for a few reasons. I know it's not a major step up but it looks as though I will have to spend a good amount more to get what I need. My house is 2600 sq ft, 1300 on each floor. The router is on the upper floor, in the middle of the house. I went to each corner of the basement and dropped signal completely on the 2.5 and 5 ghz bands. The old 841N was pushing 2/3 bars. I know I can get custom antennas and what not but the trade-off didn't seem worth it. I'll just spend a bit more and get something nicer.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: On the 5ghz band with recent Macs, I experienced 94Mb/sec via speedtest.net

Cons: 2.4ghz band was very slow. Especially compared to my 4 year old Netgear router which was hard to believe. I've set many routers up at optimal speeds and this one was disappointing, even testing within 10 feet of the router in direct line sight. Parental controls and Access Controls overlap and could be much more clear. Also, many of the settings require a reboot and that takes about a full minute to complete. Also Windows 8.1 computers have trouble with this router forcing custom changes on the client's wifi adapter.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this router for most people and not for folks using Windows 8. However, if you're computer(s) have dual band wifi adapters and especially late model Macs, then this may be a good budget choice. I wish I didn't have to lose money for a lousey product overall and all the time on testing this.

4 out of 5 eggsAll good

Pros: Easy to setup
USB network storage easy to use
Included Instructions very clear
No disconnection problems

Cons: One egg off because the signal does not seem all that strong, I live in a small apartment so I have no problems with it but larger homes may want a more powerful router

1 out of 5 eggsUnusable for guest LAN

Pros: It's pretty

Cons: I bought this router to cascade off of my primary router to implement a guest network after I discovered that the guest network implementation is unusable. Well, that won't work either because this router has the same problem as my primary router (same brand) and also won't allow me to set the subnet as required. This works on at routers from at least two other brands. Now, I'll have to return this router or find another use for it. For my needs, it's worthless.
