5 out of 5 eggsSIDNEY S. Review Refers to an ASUS Router, NOT THIS ONE

Pros: In the Review Above by SIDNEY S., he is referencing an ASUS router, NOT THIS ONE by TP-Link,

I would probably ignore his review unless he simply quoted the wrong Brand in his review.

Cons: None

Pros: Easy to configure WISP service

Cons: Firmware bug & poor technical support

Other Thoughts: This won't apply to most Newegg customers but passing along my special needs. I was setting up a simple public WiFi AP for a friend who has a chain of retail stores in Australia. They of course have an internal WiFi network & wanted to set up a second SSID for customers (low volume, mainly to advertise 'free WiFi'.) I wanted WISP because I didn't want to have to do any physical connections to their existing network. I started to setup a VLAN solution in dd-wrt before stumbling on this router which seemed to do everything for my one trick pony application. Configuration was easy, had it going in 10 minutes, five stars!

The problem when I was setting up time restrictions. I wanted the hotspot to only be up during normal business hours, all ok until I enabled daylight saving time. The firmware has a bug where you have to specify that DST starts in a month earlier than it ends (Mar start, Nov end) which is great in the northern hemisphere, but not down south.

I emailed ASUS support & explained my requirements. They knew about the bug and suggested I get a different model. Well that model didn't support WISP so I e-mailed again and their next suggestion was to get one of their range extenders, also not a satisfactory solution.

I love ASUS routers and have been using them for years with aftermarket firmware like Tomato. My two egg deduction is for them knowing about a simple firmware bug which is not on the roadmap for being fixed. Was also disappointed that they did not take the time to read the error description before offering solutions which were completely off-target.

I know my requirements are very unique but I would avoid this router simply because I feel ASUS may not be taking steps to maintain ongoing support for this product.
