In today's connected home environment with Internet file sharing, video streaming, on-line gaming, Ooma's PureVoice Technology delivers clear audio even if substandard calling conditions exist. Ooma PureVoice Technology is composed of four key components.

Advanced voice compression
Ooma uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that reduces bandwidth consumption by 60% over standard VoIP technology. That leaves you with more bandwidth for all other online activities and increases the likelihood that your voice traffic will be delivered properly by your ISP.

Wire-speed QoS
Even though Ooma uses only a fraction of the bandwidth of standard VoIP technology, preserving voice quality requires that those packets arrive on time. The Ooma Telo prioritizes voice packets without slowing down the rest of your network. This way you can enjoy crystal clear calls even as you're uploading your latest video clips.

Adaptive redundancy
Packet loss is the enemy of VoIP - it can cause voice to sound stuttered or garbled. The Ooma Telo detects packet loss on your Internet connection and automatically sends redundant packets to boost the clarity of your phone call.

Encrypted calls
Ooma takes your privacy seriously. We use the same encryption technology governments use to protect classified data to protect your conversations. This makes Ooma even more secure than the traditional landline.

4 out of 5 eggsvery nice connection once it works

Pros: Very clear connection -- flawless performance once set up. Very good feature set. Nice to dump a separate phone bill.

Cons: Bought a refurb, that was dropping packets. Tech support at Ooma walked through every option -- cables, router, power supply, etc. Took about 2 days to determine it was the unit itself.
Ooma sent a new unit to replace, and free shipment of old unit. Now works flawlessly.
The cost savings of the refurb were diminished by the little frustration of debugging the unit.

5 out of 5 eggsOoma is a great product

Pros: easy installation, cheap service

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: will have to wait and see how the billing for monthly rates works out. I should be getting for about $5 what I used to pay more than $50

3 out of 5 eggsBeware the "Gotcha's"

Pros: Call Quality. Low monthly cost

Cons: High initial cost. Sneaky High prices gotchas

Other Thoughts: Already this device is overpriced. Know that it sold for $80 just this past November, but the real "gotcha" with Ooma is that they charge you $40 to port you number. $40!? That's more than TWICE anyone else. Cell phone co's charge nothing. Cable companies charge nothing. Magic Jack, Net Duo, even Google Voice charge half that or less. Of course, that isn't indicated here. The other thing is, they really push you towards their "Premium" service, which is an additional $10 a month. Yes, you get Caller ID for free, but want the Caller ID to also display the name of the caller? You have to be A Premium subscriber. I REALLY hate companies who advertise one thing, then nickel and dime you. Particularly when that nickel and dime is $40

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertise

Pros: - Excellent Voice quality
- Pays for itself in less than a year
- No monthly payments except for taxes (about $3-$4 NYC)
- Able to block annoying telemarketers (Premier Service only)
- Can check voicemail online
- Can forward calls to my cell if my internet is down

Cons: - Sometimes calls drop due to bad connection from internet
- Somehow got more unknown callers
- Porting my old number was a little troublesome

Other Thoughts: - Premier Service is neat but I rather not pay $10 a month for it. If you are looking to cut down your phone bill, try it out.

1 out of 5 eggsOOMA Telo & Cisco IP Phone

Pros: OOMA makes it very easy to install for the normal consumer
Sleek design and user friendly interface
Website resourceful for setting up device to work with normal phone
Quality is good

Cons: Doesn't work with Cisco IP phones since SIP information is not shared by OOMA. This is the biggest knock to it since it has so much potential.

Other Thoughts: I understand VOIP Service Providers are making money on selling hardware, but they seem to forget that the hardware wars died in the 90s. They should be focusing on services, for example offering a SIP service for an extra cost to the user subscription would make things much easier on us. SIP is a protocol required for some IP Phones such as Cisco.

5 out of 5 eggsBest VOIP Device

Pros: Excellent voice quality
Cheap (only pay taxes)
Premier Service has excellent features and worth the extra price
Very good customer service

Cons: Music tone before the dial tone. I wish you could turn that off.

Other Thoughts: I see why Ooma is the highest rated VOIP device. Land line quality voice and the features offered are far superior to anything the phone company offers.

2 out of 5 eggsNot what I was expecting ...

Pros: Telephone system works. It does give me a phone number that is 100% based off of my internet connection. Was very easy to register and setup.

Cons: Isn't free after you pay for the equipment. They have you register a credit/ debit card during registration. For 2 months in a row I've had small (approx. $4) charges each month entitled Ooma. Also I live about 30 Miles North of Green Bay, WI and was unable to port my current telephone number. My only option was to select a Green Bay telephone number. This is an inconvenience that I was not expecting. (I really should have done my homework and looked into the cities that they do have local coverage for) All-in-all I would be happy to sell this unit to somebody for $100 that lives in a city that has a local Ooma number.

Other Thoughts: My phone service is about $25 a month right now after taxes and spending the money on this experiment was equivalent to about 7 months of my phone bill, and I'm no farther ahead. I was looking for a good way to cut my bills and this really didn't do it for me.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Very easy to setup, 10 min. at most, took just 8 days to port my number. Ability to use the dashboard to check calls and listen to messages while away is priceless.

Cons: None so far.
