ASUS Zenbook UX31 ultrabooks are constructed with solid metal frames, which are as sturdy as they are striking. The outer shell is composed of brushed aluminum, which provides internal processors with better protection than plastic. The keyboard is made of the same material, so the device doesn't feel fragile while typing. Even though these ASUS ultrabooks are composed of aluminum, they aren't heavier than many comparable computers, weighing slightly less than 3 pounds.

The Zenbook UX31 features 1,600 x 900 pixel resolution and is capable of playing video in 1080p. The 13.3-inch HD screen also provides ample room for multiple windows and pages, allowing for easier navigation. Additionally, the ultrabook boasts a 0.3 megapixel camera that can be used for video conferencing and facial recognition logins.

The ZENBOOK is a far cry from commodity notebook PCs that are built to simply get the job done. It’s an exercise in philosophy, created by people who spend much time and effort to find a balance between technological advancement and better living. While the modern era is typified by rapid change and upheaval, the ZENBOOK epitomizes tranquility that seamlessly integrates with the lives of users. It is an initiative to fuse beauty, strength and stability in pure unison, built on new values, and evolved for a new age where finding what’s truly important in our lives is more vital than ever. It is the world’s first PC that encourages people to seek greater meaning in their interactions with technology, rather than simply offer new gadgets. Simple, subtle but totally sophisticated, the ASUS ZENBOOK can be your companion and guide in this new phase of technological evolution.

  • newegg Incredible beauty ASUS ZENBOOK achieves a unique combination of artistic craftsmanship and advanced technology. The ZENBOOK UX31 uses a precision-crafted design measuring only 3mm at the front and 9mm at the rear and weighs a feather-light 1.3kg. It presents a fetching hairline spun metal finish with concentric circles that embody the tranquility and infinite potential of this Ultrabook. Using durable but elegant aluminum offers a lighter Ultrabook that’s easier to carry, while retaining strength and durability. To accomplish a sleek and smooth metallic look, ASUS developed new mounting methods that reduce screw usage by 12%, taking inspiration from hand-crafted luxury wrist watches. Despite the compact form factor, ASUS ZENBOOK doesn’t skimp on tantalizing graphics, rendering everything from multimedia to productivity in amazing fidelity. High definition visuals look better on the world’s first 450cd/m2 panel on any Ultrabook, making dark areas clearer, while light areas stand out in vivid detail.
  • newegg Impressively Responsive One of the key advantages of the ASUS ZENBOOK is its smartphone-like spontaneity and always-on design. Regardless of how long the Ultrabook remains in standby, it can resume in just two seconds thanks to exclusive ASUS Super Hybrid Engine II technology. In effect, this means users have no reason to shut the ASUS ZENBOOK down, eliminating the need for lengthy boot ups. And with exclusive ASUS Super Hybrid Engine II technology, the ASUS ZENBOOK can stay in standby for up to two weeks. Instant on functionality automatically backs up data to the SSD should the battery level drop below 5%, removing the risk of data loss due to a drained battery. The ZENBOOK therefore adds worry-free usability to its list of advantages.
  • newegg Incredible green Dedicated Battery Saving Mode boosts battery charge by as much as 25% for longer usability and range, free from the need to stay close to wall sockets or adapters. So that you’re always in the know when it comes to battery life, the exclusive ASUS PowerWiz utility provides accurate info on available charge by specific usage conditions, so you can plan better.
  • newegg Incredible performance While compact and light, the ZENBOOK never misses a beat with amazing technology that offers the fastest, most efficient and most breathtaking experience in its class. The 2nd generation Intel Core i5 CPU comes equipped with energy-efficient power that pushes multitasking and multimedia forward to new levels of excitement. ASUS ZENBOOK models ship with SATA 6Gb/s solid state drives rather than older mechanical storage options, making the most of the latest hard drive interface standard with double the bandwidth of SATA 3Gb/s. USB 3.0 also comes standard, upping data speeds by as much as ten times compared to USB 2.0. On average, ASUS ZENBOOK offers seven times faster data connectivity next to competing models, boosting the user experience in every application.
  • newegg Incredible cooling To accommodate so much powerful technology on a compact form factor, ASUS engineers have developed custom cooling and thermal designs that use a V-shaped air channel to increase air flow, as well as unique beryllium copper alloy components to better handle heat. There are even copper fins to direct heat away out of the case, so ASUS ZENBOOK always stays cool. While thinner and lighter than competing models, ASUS ZENBOOK is also more powerful, and runs at lower temps for increased longevity and reliability.
  • newegg Incredible audio ASUS ZENBOOK outputs staggeringly rewarding and impactful sound that far exceeds its compact size. In fact, it’s the kind of sound you’d usually associate with standalone surround setups! Based on cooperation between the ASUS Golden Ear team and Bang & Olufsen ICEpower, ASUS ZENBOOK outputs incredible audio that’s the best among all Ultrabook in its class. Custom design includes an oval voice coil for clearer vocals, oversized shielded speaker magnets for more impact and better bass, plus aluminum rings to secure speakers and reduce vibration. This is further helped by ASUS ZENBOOK’s aluminum body, which conducts and insulates sound very well at the same time. Lifelike audio via Smart Dynamic Range Control (DRC) means sheer sound enjoyment in every situation.

4 out of 5 eggsAsus does not disappoint

Pros: Hardware.
Overall Weight.
Gorgeous design.
SSD (sata III is ridiculously fast).
Not the best screen in class, but I still think it's really good, especially with the 1600x900 resolution.
Battery life is excellent (Had more than enough juice to last an entire flight from New York to Los Angeles).
Speakers - I didn't expect the speakers to be as good as they are.
Wireless network adapter - I've heard that the wireless network adapter is not that great, but I have had nothing but stellar performance out of mine.
Everyone's envy.

Cons: All Asus software.
Trackpad - Very frustrating to use. It's like it has a mind of its own. Come on Asus, all you have to do is release a good driver and that will solve the problem.
Ethernet to USB adapter was DOA (an included accessory).

Other Thoughts: Being OCD about any computer that I own, I can't stand any proprietary software (bloatware) that comes pre-installed. And unfortunately, this computer comes with plenty of it. Also, Asus decided to waist another 10 gigs worth of space on a factory backup. In most cases this wouldn't be much of an issue, but you only have 128GB's worth of space on the HD - Bad decision, Asus. Anyway, so I used an external dvd drive and reinstalled a clean version of Windows 7, which was not difficult at all. Problem solved. It always surprises me how much better a stock Windows 7 experience is. I can't say enough good things about this laptop/Ultrabook. I love it! (Just re-install Windows 7 and you will be fine). The SATA III SD - AWESOME!

One negative thing though, the trackpad is very frustrating to use. I detest trackpads in general and use a wireless mouse at all times, so this isn't that big of a deal for me, but I thought that I should note this.

3 out of 5 eggsNot quite there yet

Pros: - Fantastic build quality
- Fast boot&resume time
- Light and thin

Cons: - Poor graphics performance
- Terrible keyboard
- Inconsistent trackpad
- Full of bloatware
- Poor viewing angles

Other Thoughts: Slow graphics performance was something that I did not expect at all. I do a bit of photo processing and as soon as I started working on it I noticed how much slower it was than my 4-year old Dell XPS with a dedicated ATI card. When I did some measurements it appeared Asus was 2 to 3 times slower in Gimp (raw conversion, denoise, blur, etc.).

I read reviews where people complained about the keyboard not registering clicks but I thought they were just being cranky. Well, they were right, it is really frustrating to use.

The screen resolution is high so everything is very small with the default Windows settings. You can easily make it bigger, however you'll also have to tweak individual applications too.

The vertical viewing angles are small so you'll have to make sure you put it right in front of you otherwise the colors get washed out easily. Again, in this regard my old XPS is so much better.

Overall, I am disappointed and so the ultrabook ended up on an auction site.

4 out of 5 eggsASUS ZEN BOOK

Pros: Sleek design that is ultra portable! Keyboard takes a little getting used to when comparing to a full size laptop. Processing power is pretty good considering the clock speed. Overall I am happy with the purchase. This product is used for Business Travel.

Cons: Haptics on keyboard could be a little more responsive OR maybe I have sausage fingers: )

5 out of 5 eggsYou're doing it right, Asus

Pros: -Beautiful design, no screen flex or body flex this Ultrabook is very rigid.
-Li-Poly battery(lighter, and can last longer than typical Li-Ion)
-Great performance, and appearance.
-Good processor speed, nice size SSD.
-Wonderful packaging(safe & secure).
-All metal design for protection, and security.
-Accessories! You get a nice little pouch to carry the laptop in along with a velcro style cable tie, and a little bag for the Adapters.
-Power supply can be easily adapted for other countries with its interchangeable adapters.

Somehow, this design seems to slip under your arm perfectly for carrying around, even versus some slightly thinner, lighter UltraBooks.

Again, with the 2nd generation due in a few months, if you really have something for Ivy Bridge you will want to wait, however it seems that you may only get 100Mhz more speed in the mobile Ivy's, GPU performance is where they will really differ.

Cons: -No backlit keyboard!
So, I've read that the 2nd generation of ZenBooks with Ivy Bridge processors will have backlit keyboards. If you are patient enough to wait a few months (unlike me) then you may get one this summer.

-USB adapter needed for Wired LAN connections (this could limit bandwidth in some cases)

I understand why, as a big-ol RJ port would have messed with the nice look of the outside of the laptop case, but if you have any doubt about moving your music collection in minutes over gigabit, remember this.

Other Thoughts: For starters, this is a simply beautiful machine. From the packaging to the "Tags", ASUS thought of almost everything when building this. When you first open the box (+1 for Newegg and ASUS) the laptop is suspended by all corners by foam, and contained within yet another box for safety. The outside of the laptop is completely free of any branding stickers, which can be a problem for some laptops. I've read that ASUS got approval from both Microsoft and Intel to change the coloring of the tags to a monochrome, and it really adds to the "sleek" look. You will find merely 2 stickers on the inside, and one on the power brick and that is it.

IT does come with some of ASUS' software, such as standby widgets and "performance mode" but these are not very annoying, and of course easy to get rid of if you don't like them. This is fast, has a great screen, is lightweight and gets good battery life. If they manage to get a lit keyboard on this, it will be a total Mac Killer.

2 out of 5 eggsPower and Wifi problems

Pros: Everything spec wise is amazing and the form factor is perfect

Cons: This is an addendum to my earlier review. The power connector is very thin and it turns 90 degrees at its entrance point. Because of this, if it is in your lap it hangs downward. When you set it down, if you're not careful, it will wrench upwards and crack the inside of the motherboard. This happened RIGHT AFTER I bought it for my wife. It started shutting off randomly and the power connector would just fall out. Had to RMA and wait a week to get it back. Asus had to replace the motherboard. Even though it's fixed, I feel like it is already starting to break again because of the power connector's awful design.

Also, the 802.11N card is only 2.4ghz. So in my house, my wife can only connect to the 2.4ghz G band. Kinda pathetic considering my 2008 Asus G1S has 5ghz N wireless.

The keyboard misses about 1 key per sentence. It is really annoying.

Other Thoughts: I really like this laptop. It is blazingly fast, gets great battery life, and looks incredible. Definitely a head turner.

Unfortunately, the 90-degree turn power connector Asus went with leaves me with the feeling I have a time bomb on my hand. The power connector on the motherboard cracked less than a week after I got it. The warranty repair with Asus was fairly quick and easy, but my wife was without her laptop right in the middle of school.

I actually hope it cracks a couple more times, and soon. Maybe if it happens enough times Asus will either make a better power connector or replace it with a newer Zenbook that hopefully doesn't have this problem.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsSexy and i know it

Pros: Thin, Powerful, Great design. I use this as a class and work computer. the i5 is great at blasting through statistical packages. Plays games surprisingly well. I played portal and shogun 2 for a little bit, and both played fine on middle of the road meetings.

Cons: Lots of bloatware!!! Make sure to remove it! The Power 4 Hybrid program really throttles back this computer. I just did a clean install of windows from a USB, alot faster at removing everything. Let windows control the power settings.

Other Thoughts: Keyboard and Trackpad (get the latest drivers) take some getting used too. Make sure to optimize the trackpad by turning off "Smart Detector". It is supposed to prevent you from hitting the mouse while typing, but there is too long of a delay after typing and this causes the mouse to freeze a moment too long. This gets annoying until it is turned off.

Also instant on is interesting. It claims to bring the computer back on in 2 seconds. It does this whether or not it is on. It seems to me instant on just sets everything to sleep mode.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally, a slick notebook without a fruit.

Pros: In order of amazement: Style, build quality, touchpad, sound, speed/performance, display resolution, battery life, size, extras included, ac adapter, USB 3.0, and it's not a Mac.

Cons: I'm not a fan of the stickers on the palm rest. I appreciate that they are on the mild side and silver but distract from rest of the design.

The silver script writing under the ASUS logo under the display feels out of place.

Obviously these are not deal breakers here.

Other Thoughts: I havn't had this very long and will include a more detailed review later. The touchpad though, is by far the best I've ever seen on a PC. The display resolution and speakers are remarkable considering its size. I can't comment on the pre-installed software because the first thing I booted to was a Windows 7 USB key to install a fresh copy.

I researched way too much before pushing the "add to cart" button so if you are in that boat, hopefully this will help:

(1) The touchpad issue is resolved with new drivers that came out Dec 2011. The touchpad functions much like the Mac touchpad, you can two finger right click, or one finger click in the right click area of the touchpad. Two finger scrolling works both vertical and horizonal directions.
(2) Keyboard is fine, took me less than 90 sec to adjust to its sensitivity.
(3) They ship with a SanDisk SSD which is still very fast, initially they shipped with a slightly faster ADATA SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for what YOU may be looking for

Pros: Super fast!

Boots up in seconds!

Hardware is great quality!

Outer case feels incredibly sturdy!

All around great computer!

Cons: Comes with a bit of bloatware, but it's not too difficult to remove. Not much of a con, but you'll spend some time optimizing for ultimate performance.

Other Thoughts: I'm a 26 year old, ex-college student that was looking for an ultra-reliable laptop that didn't have a fruit on the cover. I'm already impressed by everything. All the reviews I read about the keyboard being hard to type on, well, if you're intelligent and know how to type, you'll be fine. If anything, it's OVER-sensitive. The touchpad is just fine if you actually read the directions and learn what it's capabilities are. Otherwise you'll be like an 80 year old complaining about CDs. The PC is great. You won't be disappointed, if you're anything like me, just looking for an impressive, all-around ultrabook. YOUR MONEY IS WELL SPENT if you're trying to avoid the big APPLE.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat purchase all around

Pros: Decent size SSD, nice screen with good resolution, light and sleek design that those around you will envy. Fresh Windows 7 install went very smoothly.

huge pro: 1 free year of accidental damage protection, sign up as soon as you buy this thing!

Cons: Physical buttons on touchpad are iffy.

Other Thoughts: A lot of the concern on this laptop seems to revolve around the touchpad and keyboard. I love them, so it really is about personal preference and/or getting used to using them. Functionally, they work how they are supposed to. I DO think that the physical clickers on the touchpad don't work well at all, you have to really press on them. The multi-finger gestures built into the drivers (no bloatware needed!) are fantastic though and remove the need for the physical buttons.

All of the Asus bloatware is worthless in my opinion. The instant on program must do nothing but take up space because the laptop wakes up in <2 sec regardless of it being on. All of the power management can be done using Windows.

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 and it went smoothly. Just make sure that you plug your USB dvd drive into the USB 2.0 port. The Windows 7 installer does not have the drivers for the USB 3.0 port and it will not be able to recognize the drive. Make sure to update the BIOS too!
