What do you say about the foundation of everything we do on the PC? Microsoft Windows, since its first release, has become an integral part of our computing lives. From photography to e-mail, gaming to multimedia, Windows is the framework on which all the other applications and programs are built. Without the Windows Graphic User Interface, nothing else would work. This is by design. The developers at Microsoft have worked hard to incorporate every aspect of digital information management and entertainment.

Windows XP Home SP2 offers you the best possible computing experience, compatible with most of the applications. Improved network connections make network set-up a snap and wireless networking support lets easily work offline anywhere near to the transmitter. Configurations Wizard simplifies management of hardware and software settings, and works with improved Power Management, letting you controlling your power consumption more carefully.

Windows XP includes features to protect your PC from hackers and phishers with the latest security enhancements and regular “patches” from Microsoft. It features Automatic Windows Update, an application that automatically integrates the operating system with Windows Servers and management solutions and keeps your system updated. It’s simple and easy to set up for the various users in your family, connect several computers, and you can restrict and monitor a child’s internet travels. Web browsing is a cinch – Internet Explorer 6 provides a simple interface for web browsing and reading, and helps secure your system from outside interference. This is the base on which every other personal computing program rests, and is essential for your PC.

5 out of 5 eggsAt least NewEgg still has them!

Pros: For people who bought a new system with Vista and absolutely can't stand it- they can still buy and install XP and stop pulling their hair out.

Cons: Support will discontinue next year.

Other Thoughts: Getting hard to find anywhere else.

4 out of 5 eggsWould have been good, but

Pros: I have been a loyal XP fan for a long time, and was set on grabbing XP for my first build, but I immersed myself into further research and found out that Vista x64 would be my better OS, so I RMA'd this and was given the refund. Also ordered the wrong product, should not have gone with the upgrade, I misread the title. Thank you Newegg!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Newegg is the best!

3 out of 5 eggsBetter than ME, nuff said

Pros: Had to update an old PC that had Windows Me. XP home made it more stable but ME is about the worst Microsoft OS ever so that isnt saying much.

Cons: Doesnt do Remote Connection

5 out of 5 eggsReal Easy Upgrade from ME

Pros: You put the disk in and follow the prompts. There were no installation problems at all. No more errors compared to ME.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Be sure to turn off your antivirus software, and remove any XP-incompatible drivers. It takes about an hour (but its the operating system!). Be prepared, once you turn on your windows automatic update, it will update a bunch of stuff (including sp3). All together, it took 2 hours.

3 out of 5 eggsWoops

Pros: Im sure it works fine if you need it.

Cons: Whoops, thought this would install over windows 2000. I was wrong.

Other Thoughts: Make sure your upgrading Windows 98 or 98 SE/ME

5 out of 5 eggsClean install

Pros: XP works.

Cons: Usual complaints apply.

Other Thoughts: Wanted to comment about usability with Windows 2000. While you cannot upgrade an existing installation of Windows 2000 using XP Home, you CAN perform a clean installation. The validating media requirements are very loose and I imagine just about any previous version of windows will suffice. I used a Windows 2000 upgrade disc to validate my clean installation. Works just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsMost stable version yet, until vista of course

Pros: Obviously a keeper until Vista gets it act together. I dont need much so I opted for the Home version. It does what it needs to do and its pretty stable without all of that clutter. Its been around for some time so it has matured very well. XP is very versatile to the average user and the IT pro. Props there.

Cons: Its a little cluttered for me and it would be nice to have some type of interface where I could strip unnecessary components from it. I know that I could strip it down using some programs but that would be very time consuming. Oh well.
BTW, I would like to it be more open to tweaks more than it is. But thats microsoft.

Other Thoughts: Vista is still in its early stages. Im sure it will catch on since XP went through the same rejection as Vista is. Vista will be tailored to the consumer and will grow like XP did. Time will tell how it works out.

Pros: Beats Vista hands down.

Cons: Old and buggy with serious security flaws.

5 out of 5 eggsGood enough

Pros: Really is a great simple operating system. This is the best possible operating system for a budget gamer like me. Install is fast and relatively straight forward (M$ always holds you're hand in installers). Boots up decently fast

Cons: No fancy softwares or decent security features with plain XP Home. Keep in mind that this can also be a good thing. Also, when you first install it there's a million updates.

Other Thoughts: Good simple gaming platform. Even if I had the money I would not switch to any other operating systems for my purposes. Also remember that this is an upgrade, and will NOT install on a brand new disk. There needs to be Windows 98 or something on there. I actually was able to cleanly install it on my disk,by just poppign in a old Windows 95 when it asked about older Win OS's being on the comp. I'm glad I didn't pay the extra cash for a full install. :)
