3 out of 5 eggsWorks as designed

Pros: Works as designed, software is not that difficult to figure out. Plug into computer, open excel spreadsheet, scan something and it populates the field. No brainer.

Cons: Scan area is not a thin line but a large rectangle, which makes scanning barcodes (like those found on computers, etc) very difficult. I wasn't able to determine if this was the type of scanner it was, by the description, but it works as designed.

2 out of 5 eggsIt does work

Pros: It does read bar codes. Out of the box it was PLUG-N-PLAY. Programming was pretty easy for the custom steps that I needed it to perform.

Cons: I missed it in the Tech Specs that the gun can only read out as far as 1"....(ONE INCH) This scanning distance was not suitable for my warehouse operation. I did not like the feel of the gun in hand. It is very bulky or cumbersome in the hand.

Other Thoughts: For the price this unit is not bad if you can scan items up close.

2 out of 5 eggsNot compatible

Pros: Cheap, works fine under Windows, and has had no problem reading barcodes of various things around my house or that I have printed as tests.

Cons: I bought this to use on Linux. The vendor's chipset from TenX breaks standards for the VID/PID code system for USB devices. Because multiple devices have the same VID/PID (1130, in this case, shared with the "IBuddy" device), it has been blacklisted in the kernel and the MS 180 does not work in any recent Linux distribution.

Other Thoughts: I'll be looking to return this item very shortly.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks, but not for my needs

Pros: Love Newegg; always have. The scanner will scan, but..

Cons: ..will scan only a UPC with 5 digits. Any combination of 5 it will scan. Trying to scan a combination of 6 or more digits this scanner reads not a thing.

Other Thoughts: The company's customer support is horrid (read non-existent).

3 out of 5 eggsCheap Vs Not Cheap

Pros: Low Cost. It works.

Cons: Cheap, Cheap and Cheap. You get what you pay for. Hard to scan things, you have to get right up to the barcode, I mean touching.

Other Thoughts: Not knowing much about Barcode scanners, We purchased this one and the Metrologic MK9520-72A38 to see which we would want. It's like night and day. The Metrologic one is a breeze to use, scans barcodes like 7-8 inches away. Scanned everything on my desk in like 2 seconds. Would take a minute to do it with this unitech. If you care about what your getting and your time, get the MetroLogics one, if cheap is your thing, this one is for you.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great scanner for a very reasonable price. Just plugged it in and it worked. Long cord for easy flexibility.

Cons: Scanner has almost no range. Scanner needs to be within an inch to read barcodes.

Other Thoughts: Even though you have to be right on top of the UPC code, you can't really beat the price for a full functional barcode scanner.

5 out of 5 eggsAs described

Pros: Inexpensive, effective scanner for our limited needs. We bought this scanner to verify that occasional client mailings (approximately 150 per batch) are all sent (and not just printed, etc.). This scanner is able to read a barcode through a windowed envelope with no problem, and that is pretty much all that we wanted.

Cons: It takes a little bit of practice to learn how to position the scanner to quickly read a barcode, but it's not difficult. (I’ve used scanners before, and I can say they’re pretty much all like that.)

Other Thoughts: We've only had this scanner one day, so I can't speak for the reliability. However, the only moving part I can see is the trigger mechanism (which hardly moves), so I can't see how this thing could wear out.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: - Worked out of the box and reads all the codes I needed it to, mainly UPC, ISBN and Code 93/128.
- Plug and play, no drivers required (or even provided).

Cons: - Broader and lighter than I thought it'd be, but I've gotten used to it, none otherwise.

Other Thoughts: For those who are saying that they have to get close to read barcodes, that isn't a bug. This is a contact scanner that uses LED's. If you need something that can read codes at a further distance (> 1-2 inches), get a laser scanner.

4 out of 5 eggsWonderful for the money

Pros: Utterly amazing for the price. I use this for scanning barcodes on received boxes and computer hardware at work. It reads most common barcodes including ISBN, UPC, etc. It also reads the barcodes used for MAC addresses on network adapters and other hardware.

Cons: Doesn't read some barcodes that are printed on very glossy or silver-colored labels. Needs to be quite close to the barcode to read it. It sometimes needs a very specific angle to read a barcode, but that becomes quite easy after scanning a few.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Incredibly light in the hand. One thing that I did notice was that you do have to just about 'kiss' the bar code with the scanner to pick up- but then again it helps to pick up the correct code when you have alot of them together ( We are a phone vendor and the MAC and Serial Numbers are on top of each other) Works great. no regrets, will but another if needed

Cons: None Worked right out of the box
