4 out of 5 eggsIpod Who?

Pros: Nice 4.2" touch screen. Great sound. Takes 32G Micro SD for expanding memory which is something the Ipod doesn't do. Lots of free and paid apps on the Android market. It's not an Ipod so you don't need that junk software bloating your PC. Also, you can drag and drop media to this device through USB connection. Well Done Samsung!

Cons: Difficult to find accessories such as a case or protective screen. The Galaxy S II phone case fits fine but it's not designed for it and you have to cut out part of the case to fit headphones. Other vendors sell cases designed specifically for the Galaxy 4.2 both soft and hard shell. Could use a dust cap for the charge port and headphone jack but not really a negative. Can't find this anywhere but online, C'mon Samsung flood the Canadian market, we're Apple'd to death up here!

Other Thoughts: I've been looking for an alternate media player that did the job of the Ipod but without the bloated software. I didn't want to spend a small fortune just to have an MP3 player with WIFI and descent storage option. I searched high and low but most of the Apple knockoffs were either priced way out to left field or just didn't have the options I was looking for. Then I read reviews on the Samsung Galaxy Players. The 5.0 is the latest but it's really hard to find in Canada if at all. I think it's called the WIFI S here. Anyhow the Galaxy 4.2 has a better sounding audio asic from what I've read around the forums. I bit the bullet and decided to try it out. To my amazement this little device is more than what I expected. I'm impressed to say the least. 95% of the time I'm near WIFI so it works great for me. The sound is great and many options to customize it. Also there are plenty of free/paid apps on the Android market that can help make media navigation easier for folks new to the touch world like myself. All I need to do now is get a good set of Bluetooth wireless headphones and I'm all set.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Player

Pros: Great screen quality, excellent sound, micro SD card slot, great size, fast, long lasting battery, and sync flawless.

Cons: None at this time

Other Thoughts: In my opinion, this is by far the BEST PMP on the market.'s way better than the Ipod touch or the ipod classic. I have owned in the past the following players: Ipod classic, Ipod touch, Cowon D3, Cowon S9, and the Zune HD. By far the Samsung is the best followed by the Zune HD as a close 2nd. If you by PMP players for the sound quality and don't care so much for apps, and other stufff...this is the one. The ONLY reason the buy the Ipod over this one is the apps. I'm NOT an app this does not bother me. If you wants to play games why do it on an PMP player? do it on your phone, laptop, or tablet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat device

Pros: It does everything an iPod Touch does but cheaper and with a bigger screen (but not higher rez). Takes full advantage of the complete Android app ecosystem and there is no need to be tethered to the dreaded iTunes. The sound quality and tuning performance of the built in FM radio was an unexpected bonus that I find myself using quite a bit. I bought this to replace an iPod Touch that I had lost. I wish I had lost the iPod sooner!!

Cons: No notable cons except for earbuds. Not that great, but no worse than what you find bundled with similar products.

Other Thoughts: I'd recommend this to anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent player

Pros: Decent battery life
Android operating system
Decent camera
There's a setting to change whether it auto-rotates the screen or not.
Fits in hand nicely; all buttons are easy to press
It's very customizable, but that's just Android.
It can do all that I want it to do, including streaming videos
Not apple

Cons: The battery cover seems a little flimsy, but I've taken it off and put it back on a dozen times with no trouble.

Other Thoughts: I put a 32GB microSD card in it for extra memory and after some searching, found a case for it. Because it's pretty expensive, I would definitely recommend getting a case and screen cover. Overall, I'm really happy with this device.

Pros: Beautiful Screen, above average responsiveness, full android market, good sound quality

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Battery drains somewhat quickly when connected to wifi, this is to be expected however.

4 out of 5 eggsSamsung Galaxy Player 4.2

Pros: -Beautiful design
-Responsive screen
-Expandable memory
-Great battery life
-Highly customizable
-Loud stereo speakers
-Built in equalizer / effects (sound alive)
-Myriad of android apps
-Supports dozens of file formats
-Large screen but still pocket-able
-Bluetooth connectivity
-Low cost compared to competition

Cons: -Gingerbread not the newest system
-2.0 MP camera
-Display could be better

Other Thoughts: This device is simply beautiful on the table. On the first day I got it, many people came up to me just to ask if it was a new phone, and where they can find such a beautiful device.
I had to spoil their dreams and told them it was just a media player (although Samsung Galaxy S3 looks very similar to this device), to which they gasped and asked what it was called. (I admit this device is not well known. In fact, I haven't met a single person who has it)

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 is coupled with a beautiful responsive screen and a great android platform to make it one of the best media devices out there.

Samsung did cut corners on several aspects; the 2.0 MP camera and the low resolution screen in today's standards. However, these factors are forgivable, as you will have no problems with viewing fine texts of a website, or taking pictures of your memorable occasions. ;]

The expandable microSD card memory slot is a huge advantage compared to competition like Apple's iPod touch. The fixed memory on the iPod means upgrading the entire device, paying an extra $100 for just storage capacity alone. However, even then, you may run out of storage. With this device, you can purchase a 32gb microSD for around $30, and have multiple memory cards to suit your needs. Now THAT's how you meet the user's needs.

And with the support of virtually all possible music / video formats, transferring media on this device is as easy as drag and drop; no intermediaries to give you a hard time. Now you can watch your favorite movies, and listen to your favorite songs for hours on end, with no limitations on memory or the type of files.

After playing around with this device for a few days, I have to say that I am absolutely in love with it. Look no further for a media player. This is it.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor customer service - Thumbs down

Pros: Very well rounded device

Cons: Tragically short battery life. Really poor customer service. Now I have to drive 30 miles to my nearest alternative and pay sales tax :(.

Other Thoughts: My very sweet girlfriend bought this for me as a surprise. She got the wrong device :(. I called to get a refund for a Newegg gift card toward the device I wanted and was told that "the device was ineligible for return". Even for store credit.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive device if it's right for you

Pros: Beautiful screen

Runs the full suite of android apps!

Don't have to pay for a ripoff data plan like you do for a smartphone.

Has expandeable memory slot for an sd card.

Cons: If you have or want a smartphone, this device pretty much does nothing for you that would warrant a purchase.o

Other Thoughts: Bought this because I wanted a way to use email and more importantly keep tabs on my schedule via google calendar on the go. I refuse to pay for a data plan, and I hate Apple, so this was a perfect device for me!

4 out of 5 eggsVery Useful Device

Pros: -IPS Display: looks very nice

-Front and rear facing camera

-Samsung Kies: You can connect the SGP 4.2 to your internal network and upload/download files to and from the device without any software. (USB connection is preferable for the fastest download and upload speeds)

-Ability to view documents on the device (Pro version can edit)

-Bluetooth: You can connect it to your phone and get phone calls; connect it to your PC and have your music playback on your speakers or even a BT headset. The typical transfers to and from the device is also an option.

-WiFi: b/g/n

-Ability to cache roughly 50^2 of map data (~80MB) for offline GPS use. You can also cache another 50^2 if your going somewhere. (I'm not sure if your limited to two caches or if your limited by the amount of space you have on the internal storage)

-Google Play: The Google Play store offers a lot of free and paid apps and games to make the device all the more enjoyable

Cons: -I didn't purchase it from Newegg as it was sold out in hours of a temporary price drop. Thankfully the next day other sites followed suit and I got it elsewhere.

-I'm not sure if it's my device but the left side (opposite of the power button) of the backplate doesn't lock properly. I had to file down the little fastener to make it fit flush with the device.

-A bit over 3.1 GB of free space on the device so you'll need a MicroSD card if your music collection is bigger.

-The CPU is underpowered for the use of Google voice search.

-No flash on the rear facing camera

-You need to re-cache the offline map data every time Google Maps updates

Other Thoughts: To be honest I was looking for a GPS unit and somehow stumbled onto this device. I decided to purchase the SGP 4.2 since the feature set made it a must have and it was very compact relative to anything available (minus the Garmin nuvi 3790). Once you get a fix with the GPS it works very well. The other features were just a nice bonus. And Android was a huge shocker for me since I never used it. For sure Android is an amazing OS and with Google's services the functionality is a lot more than the asking price.

4 out of 5 eggsGood player for a premium price

Pros: *Responsive interface
* microSD and internal SD card show up as drive letters in Windows 7 for easy copying
* Battery life is good as long as you reduce screen brightness

Cons: * Built in speakers are weak/tinny, but what do you expect?
* Pricey (you can get a tablet for two hundred $, but those are hard to stick in your pocket).
* Seems like all of the directions/maps applications get bugging you to login to your Google account in order to use them.

Other Thoughts: I wanted a touchscreen-enabled MP3 player with good battery life and without a phone.

Bought it with a 32GB microSD card as the primary music/video storage.

Works great as a music player and web browser. Many of the apps require a Samsung or Google account to function. So if you don't mind that it can do a lot more.
