4 out of 5 eggsCoby 2.8" Black 4GB MP3 / MP4 Player MP826 Review

Pros: 1) The displays on all the menus are great.
2) Decent battery life. (at half charge I got at least 2 hours or so of play time)

Cons: 1) No way to add memory (No scan disc port).
2) Touch screen is too precise, you would need to buy a stylus to get better control.
3) Its device software (for organizing your files and such) isn't the greatest.

Other Thoughts: Overall a good product. I would suggest buy a higher level grade of earphones with this device. You'll enjoy the sound better. You MUST buy a stylus for this product. Dealing with the touch screen with your fingers will drive you nuts.

This device is perfect if you want something to listen to while working out or doing light chores. Decent Radio. I'd buy it again.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your money.

Pros: Does what it advertises, if you can count doing everything poorly as working..

Cons: Terrible device, I want my money back but Newegg won't refund RMA this device for some reason. Thought I'd give the little guy a try and boy do I regret spending the $60. This performs like a $20 gas station MP3 player and not an ounce better. Touch screen is a joke. Try sliding the volume down lol, not going to happen. Sometimes I need to press something four or more times before it will register my command. Not sure if this is a bad touch screen or a super slow processor. And yes I calibrated.. Twice to be sure I did it right. Really really want my money back so I can purchase something that is not terrible.

5 out of 5 eggsA nice MP3/MP4 Player

Pros: I bought this for a Christmas gift for a friends daughter and she loves it. It was really easy to get setup for her and customize it for her liking. Also she liked how long the battery life is on it and how well the video comes out on it. So I am glad I bought it for her.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsAbout what you'd expect

Pros: Radio has great reception from what I can tell

Anyone who doesn't need a MAC OS to use a computer can use this device and create playlists, though it's not as "user friendly" as an ipod user might have come to expect.

Easy to put music and and get started with

Cons: None that i can think of, the device does what you would expect, but doesn't have many frills, which is what stopped me from giving it 5 stars.

Other Thoughts: the ear buds that the device comes with offer the quality of sound you would expect from a free throw-in set of ear buds...though i will say that they are the type that will stay in your ears if you intend to use the product for lifting weights (which is part of why I purchased this product, I don't like shuffles)

The "protective casing" that it comes with doesn't seem very useful, it's pretty much just something that you would put it in if you were traveling and didn't intend to use the thing.

the free music downloads that the device comes with are from coby related website that doesn't have the kind of music that you might want, and you also need to give them your credit card info just to get the free trial, which is expected for something like that, but worth noting.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate...

Pros: Works well with WMV videos, even made a 3.5 hour compilation of all 28 episodes of Freeman's Mind to test it.

Cons: When playing videos at over a 512K bitrate, the back of the player starts to get warm. When playing at 3.6M bitrate, it gets alarmingly hot. In all formats that I've tried, the videos start skipping a few frames every second, or two when they are above 1M bitrate.

The slider that tells you how far along you are in the video, don't use it to jump forward. It frequently will show that you are jumping to the 3/4 mark, but show something from the 1/4 area of the video.

For longer movies, you will really need to section it up, or you'll be enduring several minutes of holding the fast forward button just to resume the video where you left off.

Still locks up without reason on sometimes.

Other Thoughts: I wish there were more colors to choose from in the E-book text color selection.

This is not a big deal for most people, but since I'm used to running sound systems I'm quite annoyed about it. The earbuds that came with this, the right side produces about 4db less volume than the left side. I think it may have something to do with the glue that was used on it.

4 out of 5 eggsI forgot some...

Pros: Comes with the USB cord, so you don't have to buy it seperately.

Included in the package is a set of "High Performance Isolating Earphones". Looks like a black version of their CVEM79 earbuds. They work great, and drop exterior noise by around 20db. Great bass. :)

Automatic power down when not in use.

Volume control buttons on the side are very nice, much easier to use than the touchscreen volume slider.

Control lock, so you don't accidentally bump the screen and blow your ears out.

How did I forget the most important pro? It isn't an Apple product!

Cons: I mentioned that there needed to be a few extra bass boost settings. Those are the MSEQ settings. Need a bass boost 3D version.

I also said the User EQ didn't seem to work, I was wrong. It was just hard to notice unless you went from no-EQ to the user EQ.

Only a 1-month replacement only warranty from Newegg.

Other Thoughts: I've been having a few issues with it locking up/crashing on me, and I'm not quite sure why. I expect Coby to fix these issues with a firmware upgrade soon.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

Pros: Plays all common file formats. (excluding lossless)

Radio works perfectly, and is configurable for areas outside the US.

Touchscreen works incredibly well, despite my fat fingers.

25+ hours battery life.

Built-in calculator, clock and calendar.

Cons: Instructions didn't mention that you should do a touchscreen calibration when you first turn it on.

User equalizer settings are extremely hard to set, (counterintuitive, needs to be replaced by the setup used by the time/date setting system) and don't seem to work at all. (and didn't on the MP610 I replaced this with either, so that might be a more common Coby problem)

Only 1 bass boost equalizer setting. It really needs 3 levels building up to the one it has now.

No equalizer settings for the radio.

No video playback adjustment settings. (brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, playback speed, etc.)

Only 4GB, and the product line only goes up to 16GB. (I'd like to see an 80GB version, hard to fit more than 2 DVDs on this while still having music on it)

Other Thoughts: This plays AVI format videos, and comes with compact and reliable software that quickly converts to the correct format/resolution.

Might be a good idea to include a sensitivity setting for the touchscreen itself next time...

I had a Coby MP610-4GB that I replaced with this. It lasted 2 years, several submersions, and a 2 story drop before the headphone jack separated from the circuit board. The video still works though, and I'm using it as a 4GB jump drive now.
