4 out of 5 eggsWorth it, but not overly impressive.

Pros: This thing is pretty reliable, and reasonably accurate. The suction cup mount is a lot more reliable than my previous model.

Cons: Voice command/recognition is almost worthless for anything other than saved places.

When it gets very hot, the audio cuts out until it cools down. This happens maybe once or twice a month during the summer.

It could never compete with models that are internet connected, at least when looking for specific businesses by name. This is to be expected though.

It rarely predicts traffic jams contrary to the advertisements.

Other Thoughts: I got an unusually low price on this, so really I got decent bang-for-buck. It's pretty reliable and accurate when you know the address. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsCall it a best buy!

Pros: Couldn't be more simple to operate. The basic functions of entering a destination have been semi-automated to an amazing degree. The improvement in graphics was a knock-out; as was the improved keyboard.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: My old (very old) Garmin finally plotted its last course and went to GPS heaven. I did my homework and found the 3490 was highly recommended, saw the lifetime updates included in the purchase price, and bought it.
When it was delivered, I plugged it into a USB port on my computer and the automated update process kicked in, ran for about three hours, and was finished without errors of any kind.
Within a couple of days I had to drive my grandson to a friend's house several miles away. It took about 60 seconds to enter the data, plot the course, and hit the road.
I also went through the process of entering all of the destinations we visit on a regular basis (all over the Eastern U.S.) and it was the same experience. About one minute to enter the data, plot the course, save for future use.
If you're looking for a solid GPS unit, just buy it.

5 out of 5 eggs3490 LMT

Pros: I drive between 5 and 10,000 miles each month, and this is the best of 4 GPS's that I have owned.
The traffic app is good, but sometimes it can put you in a bad spot.

Cons: Traffic is misleading when I am on Long Island NY expressways.
The GPS will try to take me off the major roads, and rout me through Brooklyn, and Manhattan to get around traffic jams,
Problem is those city streets are not reported to the traffic system, and the GPS thinks it is a faster route. I once got trapped on a Friday in Manhattan for 5 hours, because of this problem.
Sometimes it is better to stay on the major road.

Other Thoughts: Well worth the money.

1 out of 5 eggsNot impressed

Pros: Easy to set up and update. Looks nice and the 3d features are good. Traffic is ok, when it actually works and is up to date.

Cons: Several glaring issues that I have had over the past few years that I thought updates would fix:
First- The voice navigation doesn't work half the time. I will say the street names loud and clearly and it will give me something totally different. This is the main reason I bought this model.
Second- The traffic feature only works part time as well. It will also send me some ways, even though I have fastest route set, that clearly are not faster. It will sometimes show that there is construction from something that they finished weeks before!
Lastly, and the worst part (and why it only got one star) is the fact that the unit continues to freeze up on me. It will just freeze and I have to do a power reset to get it working again. It happens in heat, cold, normal temps, whatever. Out of the blue and even in the middle of navigating. This is unacceptable and I have done all the firmware updates and map updates to keep it current, but it still does it.

Other Thoughts: I have been a Garmin owner since the beginning of the GPS era, but if this is the kind of product I can expect, I will be looking elsewhere.

5 out of 5 eggsFeature Rich GPS with Blazing fast speed

Pros: My previous GARMIN was a Nuvi 200 without lifetime maps. So, this Garmin was quite an improvement for me. I bought a refurbished model to save even more money and I had no problem with it at all. I bought this new GPS to take with me on a ski trip at Lake Tahoe. Right off the bat, the route calculation speed was much faster that what I had before. Also, the address entry was much more intuitive. The unit provides road names to choose as you are entering the address. You don't have to tell the unit what state you are located like with the older units. It uses your current location to find the road name that is nearest in distance. I flew into Sacramento International Airport and then drove into the mountains. So, I spent a little time navigating the CA Interstate system. The addition of highlighted arrows to indicate which lane you should be in was a very helpful addition. Also, the ability to change your destination via hands free voice command is a very good addition to these GPS devices. This worked very well with my unit. The size of the unit made it very easy to pack in my carry on luggage. The touch screen was very responsive similar to my iPhone. Recalculating routes occurred very quickly. The screen is just the right size in my opinion to provide the information that I needed but not occlude too much of my driving view out my front wind shield. The battery life was long enough to not even need to be plugged into automobile battery. I found the traffic updates to work. I never had a problem with traffic. So, I didn't test that feature extensively. Images of the exits was very helpful also. Maps cover all of North American and Europe. There is a slot for adding memory to provide space for all possible maps that can be loaded onto the device.

Cons: Updating the maps proved to be tricky and time consuming. Allow several hours for this to complete. I had to start this over several times turning the unit and my web browser on and off several times to get the device firmware and maps loaded. It worked better for me to upload one item at a time to the device before selecting the next item available on the list.
This device allows you to use it as the speaker and microphone for your phone via bluetooth. I don't recommend doing this because the speaker in this device is not as good as my iPhone. Once I set this up, it was annoying that every call that came through was routed through this device. It actually add an extra delay in your phone converstion.

Other Thoughts: I will not travel without my Garmin and this model exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this model. It has a ton of additional information built into it which made my trip a ton more fun. I was able to find points of interest, restaurants, sporting goods stores and tons more very rapidly both via voice command and manually while in route from one place to another. I do not believe that you will be disappointed with this Garmin model. I'm planning on buying one for my son for his birthday.

5 out of 5 eggsGarmin Rocks!

Pros: - Rated as the top GPS in Consumer reports
- Works as advertised
- Menus are very easy to navigate
- Traffic function works well here on the east coast NC to I disagree with posts on radio signal being poor...
- small, thin and easy to read screen
- easy to hear and understand
- pairs nicely with smart phone for hands free calling
- voice command works well!

Cons: - I had only one time that traffic function didn't work and I was stuck in traffic a little longer than I would have liked while traveling up north

no other cons....get a bag, case or garmin's case to store when not in use. Keep this screen looking nice---it is sweet.

Pricey, but you do get what you pay for...

Other Thoughts: none. Buy one! You'll be happy like me.

5 out of 5 eggsflash a nuvi 3790 to make it a 3490

Pros: I bought a 3790 (which newegg sells for 260). The 3790 has the same hardware as this model the 3470. It is easy to flash the 3470 firmware onto the 3490. Do that and your 3790 has been converted into a 3490.

Cons: None. Flash is easy.

Other Thoughts: The 3490 comes with the HD traffic module. The 3790 comes with the regular traffic module. The regular traffic module works just fine with the 3490 that has been flashed from a 3790.

2 out of 5 eggsTraffic Signal Not Received

Pros: Voice activation and recognition work well; blue tooth speakerphone is just enough; routing is ok, if you don't need real time traffic information; nice and thin (do we really care??)

Cons: Traffic signal is not received by the unit (based on comments in Garmin forums, this appears to be a known issue with the GTM 60 traffic receiver/power cable combination); FM coverage is spotty; FM receiver cable that lays across your dash-board could hold a boat anchor (the skinny little GPS unit looks silly by comparison); traffic information is not presented in an intuitive or even an intelligible way.

Other Thoughts: I do not go anywhere without a traffic connected GPS. I have owned and used the top of the line from TomTom (Go 2535 Live) and Garmin (1690, 2495LMT, 3490LMT), and even the old Dash system GPS. The best unit in current production is probably the Garmin 1695, but it lacks voice recognition (my familiarity is based on the 1690) . The 2495 LMT is unusable because you cannot hear the speakerphone in your rental car, and because of the ubiquitous banner ads (add some volume and take away the ads and the 2495 wold be a good unit; the traffic feed is only a middle-level service, but at least you receive the signal). The 3490LMT simply does not receive the traffic signal, most of the time. Unless you are sitting directly under an FM transmission tower, forget about it. By the time you get a signal, you're already stuck in whatever traffic is out there -- I returned it for a refund. I am still giving this unit 2 eggs, because the voice recognition and speakerphone worked OK.
