Nintedo 3DS
Nintendo 3DS XL
3D Features

3D Screen

The Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL systems feature a stereoscopic 3D display on the upper screen to give objects within the game world a feeling of space and depth. It becomes easier to see the position of characters and obstacles, making many game experiences even more intuitive for all types of players.

3D Depth Slider

A built-in 3D Depth Slider allows you to adjust the intensity of the 3D settings on the Nintendo 3DS system to your liking. The 3D effect can also be turned down completely - all Nintendo 3DS games and applications can be played in 2D.

3D Camera

The Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL systems can take photos in 3D, thanks to the two outward-facing lenses. Capture eye-popping images of your friends and family, have fun with filters like the Merge lens, or even use the system's AR technology and included AR Cards to make Mii™ characters and Nintendo heroes appear in the real world with you.

You can share your 3D photos with others by submitting them to the Nintendo 3DS Photo Showcase. Browse featured galleries or submit your own masterpiece to the Showcase.

In a creative mood? You can record your own 3D videos, or 3D stop-motion animation using the built-in 3D camera.

Unique Controls

Motion Sensor & Gyro Sensor

Portable play control reaches a new level with these amazing features, allowing for unique gameplay mechanics. A built-in motion sensor and gyro sensor can react to the motion and tilt of the system, so whether players are twisting their systems side to side or moving them up and down, their motion-compatible Nintendo 3DS games respond instantly.

Analog Control

With the Circle Pad, located above the + Control Pad, all three systems in the Nintendo 3DS family offer full analog control. Combined with the touch screen, traditional buttons, camera and microphone input, and advanced motion control of the Motion Sensor and Gyro Sensor, the potential is extraordinary.

All systems in the Nintendo 3DS family come with a Stylus to allow for precise touch controls on the bottom screen.

Two Screens

Two Screens

Games look better than ever on the two screens of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

On the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL, a widescreen display on the top screen shows 800 x 240 pixel resolution, allocating 400 pixels for each eye to create the 3D effect.

The bottom LCD touch screen operates at a resolution of 320 x 240 - with both screens capable of displaying a brilliant 16.77 million colors.

The Nintendo 2DS offers a widescreen display on the top screen, showing 400 x 240 resolution, while the bottom touch screen operates at a resolution of 320 x 240.

SD Memory Card Included

SD Memory Card Included

All systems in the Nintendo 3DS family come packed with an SD Memory Card*. You can use this SD Memory Card to store your 3D photos, sound recordings created on the system, and music** from your PC. You can also use it to store games downloaded from the Nintendo eShop. The Nintendo 3DS family of systems feature SDHC card compatibility to increase your storage space even further.

*Nintendo 3DS systems come with a 2GB SD Memory Card and Nintendo 3DS XL and Nintendo 2DS systems systems come with a 4GB SD Memory Card.

**Nintendo 3DS is compatible with MP3 and AAC file formats.

Backwards Compatibility

Backwards Compatibility

Almost all existing Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games can be played on the Nintendo 3DS family of systems in 2D. With backwards compatibility, your existing portable games look and play just as well*.

If you've downloaded Nintendo DSiWare games and applications on your Nintendo DSi system, you can easily transfer most of those games to any system in the Nintendo 3DS family. You can also transfer downloaded software, sounds, and images between systems in the Nintendo 3DS family. Some games cannot be transferred. See the full list, and to learn how to perform system transfers

*Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games will be displayed in 2D graphics. Select Nintendo DS games that use accessories in the Game Boy™ Advance slot of the Nintendo DS system are not compatible with the Nintendo 3DS system.

*Flipnote Studio cannot be transferred to the Nintendo 3DS system. Nintendo will be developing a similar application for the Nintendo 3DS.

A system update may be required for some features.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent portable entertainment

Pros: The larger screen is definitely a plus in terms of the gaming aspect and even for watching videos on Netflix - yes I said it, it does Netflix support. However, I do wish that the browser and other online features were stronger... IE no flash support / html5 or even youtube support (hopefully in the future)

Light and very portable, still fits in my pocket so I can take it anywhere with me for entertainment. The battery, not sure the mAH, but it definitely lasts long enough for the day without having to charge it up every so often.

Currently running MH3U and can't wait for other games to release on this awesome unit. The 3D takes a while to adjust, but it can be an awesome feature at times.

Cons: I wish the plastic build was a little stronger, it would probably make it heavier, but there are times where the unit squeaks while I'm playing (just a minor thing)

The GPU could be a little more optimized, some games I do feel framerate drops IE Harvest Moon ANB (could just be the developers)

The browser isn't very powerful and there still isn't too much support for other streaming services, etc. But also very minor as this unit is mainly for your Nintendo games.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I would recommend this unit as it is very entertaining, well designed, and especially fun!

5 out of 5 eggsBig, bright

Pros: It's huge and beautiful and bright and cheap. Exactly what I wanted out of a gaming system. Battery life is good, especially considering the screen size. And you can get a spare battery, too. Swapping batteries requires a small Phillips-head screwdriver (so glad they stopped using the proprietary tri-wing screws!)

Cons: My only gripe is with how Nintendo has handled its app store. There's not much in it, and new titles come out slowly. But that's a complaint at Nintendo in general, not this specific system. And besides, I mostly got it to play my old DS games on a huge awesome screen, and for that it works awesome.

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome

Pros: Love this system although i am not partial to any hardware/console. The 3D is better in the XL then the orginal 3DS. Been playin adventure time and lovin it!

Cons: sometimes you cant seem to get the best angle or distance to make the 3D its best

Other Thoughts: dosent play any old GB/GBC/GBA games...

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: Amazing screen clarity. The larger screen makes the 3D element that much more engrossing and enjoyable.

The Circle Pad is slightly smaller, and much easier to use. It just sticks to my thumb better than the 3DS circle pad, or the pad on the CPP.

The Matte paint looks and feels great.

The transfer process allowed me to keep all of my "$80" worth of games I got for ordering the 3DS when it came out.

No stuck or dead pixels.

Cons: The battery door sticks out slightly at the base and it catches my palms and feels uncomfortable.

The device is quite a bit heavier than the 3DS and becomes awkward to hold after a few minutes while laying down. The added heft of the larger setup greatly affects the ergonomics of the device.

As mentioned in many reviews, individual pixels are quite easy to see if you hold the device closer than 10 inches or so from your face. They recommend over 12 inches away from your face to use.

I had to google how to transfer my 3DS to my 3DS XL. The instructions were not made obvious when I turned on the device and did initial setup. This took about 15 minutes once I got it started.

Other Thoughts: The 3DS XL is an amazing device for all the same reasons the 3DS is, except it also has a very large display. I've only had it for a day and a half now, but I am a huge fan of the larger device and I am certain I will get a great deal of good use out of it.
