4 out of 5 eggsOverall GREAT phone, fast, good resolution and clarity

This review is from: Sony Xperia ZL C6502 HSPA+ Black 3G Quad-Core 1.5GHz 16GB Unlocked Cell Phone

Pros: Slim, lightweight feeling for its size, decent screen resolution and clarity, though other reviews about the viewing angle issue are truer than I would like to admit. Responsive camera, with flash. Good phone and sound quality. Nice Sony earbuds provided. Nice themes, fairly easy to navigate, relatively little installed garbage on it... but... see cons.

Cons: I came from an original Samsung Galaxy S (yes, the original from almost 4 years ago!) updated to 2.4, and I was used to the black background with white text theme which is FAR better for reading and the eyes than the basic themes in Android 4.x from what I can tell. It appears there aren't options for going to that sort of theme in the base applications like Contacts, Mail, Messaging, etc., unless you root your phone. Bad.
Other things to consider are:
- you can't replace the battery.
- there is a very tiny ridge around the glass where it meets the case that seems to attract dust, dirt, and tiny crumbs. weird. and a bit annoying.
- there are some duplicate apps that Sony stuffs on here (basically 2 different kinds of album/photo managers, but weirdly unless I haven't found it yet, no basic file manager

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a great phone and a good choice if you want decent performance, don't need all the absolute latest and craziest stuff, though it is a pretty solid combination of features and specs. Unfortunately, this new phone has also hit the sidewalk once already and the glass chips relatively easily, and the somewhat soft rubber backing/case can easily get scuffed. The current prices are reasonable for what you get, and the big bonus is the ability to use on any carrier when you travel... as I do... just by switching the SIM. Sweet.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth it

This review is from: Sony Xperia ZL C6502 HSPA+ Black 3G Quad-Core 1.5GHz 16GB Unlocked Cell Phone

Pros: Quad-Core, HSPDA+ with GSM carriers in US, 1080x1920 screen resolution. 16GB+Card, Design vs other smartphones. Unlocked and bloatware free (no junk apps included) Sony Bravia Engine, Infrared port. 13mp camera and more.
Got more hardware features than Xperia ZL or Galaxy S4

Cons: 1 day battery on high usage or so, 2 day battery on medium-low usage. More thick than Xperia Z or Galaxy S4.
No 4G LTE support - should be not a cons for me and most of the people, because I mostly use wifi and HSPDA+ is more than enough for me top of HSPDA+ speed is 42 Mbit/s which is like cable internet speed (high end one)

Other Thoughts: Worth its money. Go for it (if you got more money get xperia Z). Unless if you like outdated design like Galaxy S4 (because its looks like almost same like S3 last year design). You might say: S4 unlocked got octa core and its faster. No!!! because by the time you will use its 100% performance power, it will be way too outdated by software support. That what happened with T-mobile LG G2X and T-Mobile Galaxy SII (both are dual-cores) -- they stuck at Andorid 2.3.xx unless if you root them and install custom newer firmware.

My favorite feature in this phone is remote control for any TV any make any model.

4 out of 5 eggs1st week, from SGNote1 to ZL.

This review is from: Sony Xperia ZL C6502 HSPA+ Black 3G Quad-Core 1.5GHz 16GB Unlocked Cell Phone

Pros: -12MP EXMOR camera
-Sony's panorama sweep is best for auto single row stills
-Dedicated 2 stage camera button
-Call quality
-External sound
-Very high res. 5" screen with minimal bezel
-"Cool" status light
-Micro SD card expansion
-Textured back plate with rounded edges feels great
-UI is smooth

Cons: -Relatively short battery life
-Battery is non-removable
-Virtual Home, Back, and Task Manager buttons eat up screen real estate (does not always auto-hide)
-Screen viewing angle is very poor compared to SGNote1
-EXMOR camera superior auto mode is unpredictable
-Image noise reduction is too heavy: even in bright sun it looks like water colors
-HDR/backlight mode almost always creates ghosting in images
-Front facing camera's bottom-right corner position is always looking up your nose, even at arms length (turn phone upside down for better results; *fail*)

Other Thoughts: I was very hopeful coming from a Samsung Galaxy Note 1. The idea of a 5" screen, almost as big as SGN, with smaller bezel sounded great. In actual application however the ZL's screen is much narrower than the SGN. Because the SGN's screen has a more square aspect ratio, you get way more real estate than one would assume from just the spec. numbers. The ZL's screen is noticeably more crisp, contrasty, and the colors seem more "correct" out of the box (more tweakable too). The way i see it now, the ZL seems to be targeting Apple's iPhone 5 (the most popular smartphone in Japan now-a-days). I have a new appreciation for just how good the original Samsung Galaxy Note is. I may part with the ZL and wait for the "Galaxy Note 3".
