4 out of 5 eggsXperia ZL C6506

Pros: The Swiss army knife of phones. Beautiful display. Comfortable to hold. Fast quad core processor. 4.4.2 Kit Kat.

Cons: Weird battery issue out of the box (resolved). Thumbprint magnet.

Other Thoughts: Really nice phone that supports pretty much any GSM network out of the box including LTE. The setup to get on T-Mobiles network took less than 5 minutes.

Initially the phone had 4.2.1 and I was worried when I saw the battery life sink like a stone with very little use.

However it was less than a few hours of use that I was notified of a new system update by Sony that took the phone to 4.4.2 Kit Kat. After the update, the battery life seemed to more than double and now I can easily use the phone all day with about a 3rd battery left by the late evening.

The phone has an almost edge to edge display which is amazing and in my personal opinion it's way more comfortable to hold and use than the Z, though it's not waterproof which may be an issue to some.

Sony is a bit of a dark horse in the phone arena but look at the reviews out there and you'll see they hold their own easily against the big names like Samsung and Apple in all areas. If you are shopping for a top tier phone with solid build quality, performance and isn't locked into one network, give this phone a once over. You won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted. And Sony support is garbage.

Pros: Compact size for a 5" full HD display. Good camera. Well-built.

Cons: At the 10-month mark, LTE would go in and out. Then random overheating and hanging. Then it just decided to start powering itself off randomly. It only stays on if charging from wall power. Many others have reported this with the Z, ZL etc. Of course I formatted it, tried putting it back to Jellybean, then back to Kitkat, many hours later, same thing. Bad hardware on a Sony flagship model. Always in a case and well taken care of.

Other Thoughts: So I chat with Sony Mobile support. They have no tips or idea what may of happened, just yep it's broken, call our support line.
I called the support line. On hold 15 minutes, then just silence, then it hangs up. I called back. ExCEPTionally high call volume. Press 2 to have a callback. I press 2. SORRY mailbox is full. Press 0 for help. I Press 0. SORRY there is no one to help you. Try to call again, goodbye.
Garbage. So not just avoid this model, avoid all of Sony. TVs, phones, etc. all sliding downhill with no support.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It works well with Tmobile LTE & H+ networks. Small size for big screen phone. Quad cores run apps smoothly~

Cons: Battery capacity is relatively small. It runs kind of hot after heavily uses, but cooler than my old Samsung s2. The front camera is located at the lower left corner.

Other Thoughts: I think this phone is one of the best value unlocked cell phone in the market~ That's why I picked up mine. Just upgraded to Android 4.3. The improvements are noticeable, especially the default typing method! Make sure you upgrade to 4.3 if you have this phone!

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Was a nice phone until it died

Cons: Their customer support is terrible, they can't even fix a phone. Useless warranty. It died in less than six months and they can't fix it. I'll NEVER buy a Sony product again.

Other Thoughts: Sony is junk.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Phone

Pros: Smaller form factor with 1080p screen. For my needs, this phone has it all. It's fast, has plenty of memory, supports SD card expansion, battery life is above average, supports all protocols/frequencies for T-Mobile. If you don't like the giant size of today's premium android offerings, but don't want to compromise on features/quality this is a pretty good way to go. Just ordered my wife one too.

Cons: Non-removable battery, as others have stated. Not much of a con for me.

4 out of 5 eggsexcellent, except nonremovable battery

Pros: T-Mobile/ATT LTE compatible.
Exceptional display
Very responsive
Sony PC Companion software excellent
Large, high res screen
Replaces 7" tablets
Fast data
Versatile, state-of-the-art connectivity
No hangs, no glitches.
High quality construction.
unlocked
GPS receiver one of the most sensitive I have seen, either separate or integrated.

Apart from the Google Nexus, which is actually a tablet, this may be the only device that is LTE compatible with both Tmobile and AT&T. The US version of the waterproof "Z" covers just a single Tmobile LTE band. The ZL covers five bands.

Even with no SIM, the ZL is a very interesting choice as a tablet. The screen resolution compensates for the size.

Cons: Support staff ignorant. I called tech support to find out how to tether it via usb. It turned out to be markedly different than a TM506 flip-phone. While tech support was trying to get off the hook by telling me I had to contact Microsoft, I figured it out, and taught them.

If a wifi access point is some distance, and the signal is weak, extreme battery drain may occur. Attempting to connect to a marginal 5gHz network, the battery dropped 10% in 3 minutes. The drain would have been less on the 2.4 gHz band. But if traveling with the phone, it seems advisable to either avoid the use of wifi, or carry a charger pack.

Battery is nonremovable. One of the big makers should break from this rip-off.

Screen front is not Corning gorilla glass.

Other Thoughts: A larger, swappable battery pack would unlock the missing potential. Grossly overweight Americans should stop focusing on the thinness of their gadgets and instead focus on the thickness of their guts.

5 out of 5 eggsReally Nice Phone

Pros: I went from a Samsung Galaxy Nexus to this and boy what a big difference going from a mid range phone to a flagship model. Unlike most reviews that I've read online about the screen washing out and bad viewing angels, I feel that they are way off. After using this for several weeks, it's my summation that those reviewers must have been paid by Samsung and Apple to write less than pleasing reviews.

As for battery life, I've been testing the "Stamina" mode and must say that I can go about 2 days without charging. Now granted, I'm not a heavy user and don't look at my phone every 10 minutes. The stamina mode turns of the wifi and data radios to conserve battery life *WHEN* the screen is off; the phone is "sleeping". Phone calls and text messages still function without a miss. When you wake the phone up the radios turn on, emails and other data required items work without missing a beat.

I really like the tactile feel of the back. I gives an anti-slip feeling unlike the all glass back Z model.

As for price, some think it's too high, well, it is Sony's flagship phone and some manufactures would charge $100 to $200 more.

Cons: I haven't come across anything as of yet.

4 out of 5 eggsNot like everybody else's phone

Pros: Crystal clear screen -- viewable in strong daylight; above average battery -- heavy use throughout business day will require recharge before going out; smooth UI; very fast

Cons: Price is still a little high, but that didn't stop me from buying; the back feels a little cheap compared to others; cannot remove battery

Other Thoughts: Would be a 5egg if not for the cons. It is more like 4 and a half egg in my mind. I do recommend this phone. It is nice to have something different than everyone else.

5 out of 5 eggsAn excellent purchase

Pros: As others have mentioned, amazing screen... incredibly bright (Sony's default auto-dimming dulls it a bit much for my comfort IMO), and amazing color reproduction. Yes, as many external reviews have pointed out, viewing angles are not amazing, but then again, I tend to not expect 180-degree viewing angles on an LCD display...

UNLOCKED HSPA+ and LTE are amazing to have... I unpacked this phone and put my T-mobile USA SIM card expecting to top out at HSPA+... to my surprise, I had a solid 2-3 bars of LTE signal right off the bat (I am in the NYC metro area, where LTE is supposed to be rather spotty, in a pre-launch stage on T-mobile's network). Commuting around the city on a regular basis, seems LTE is up and running quite solidly, and functions amazingly well on this phone. DC-HSPA+ also works quite well, pulling in connection speeds of close to and sometimes exceeding 8-15 Mbps down and 2-3 Mbps up with < 80 ms latency (LTE latency is solidly below 50 ms with around 20 Mbps down and about 10 Mbps up in most places I get it.)
Sony's Android skin is rather mild, and quite to my liking. There's very little bloat to mention (I actually like the Walkman app for music playback). Most pre-installed apps have at least some utility (Really got a kick out of the included IR blaster app to control my TV and home theater audio system.) As to speed, the quad-core + 2 GB RAM and fairly bloat-free ROM mean a vastly lag-free experience. For those who really do want to rid themselves of Sony's ROM, Sony has always had excellent dev support (including git access to sources published in a fairly timely manner), and I believe there are already a few CyanogenMod ROM's cooked up for the Z and ZL, so suit yourselves.
Overall, if you're in the US and want a good flagship Android that works with 2 of the major carriers on both 3.5G and 4G LTE (and don't care for Verizon's coverage), get this phone... Just beware that you do need to get a fake IMEI activated if you're on AT&T and don't already have the "true" 4G LTE data plan, otherwise the system will simply restrict your ZL to HSPA+ (Basically, you need to find a friendly store rep who can put the LTE plan on your account using a spare phone that is recognized as a 4G LTE handset by AT&T's activation system.) For me, having good LTE in major cities and DC-HSPA+ when on major interstates is more than sufficient, and having truly unlimited data + LTE on this phone is a must-have.

Cons: The viewing angles are somewhat a con for those who are into that I suppose..

4 out of 5 eggsThe only reasonable option

Pros: - Supports ALL U.S. LTE/3G frequencies. You can use this on both T-Mobile 3G/LTE networks, as well as AT&T.
- 1080p Non-AMOLED display with white balance calibration app built into settings. Natural color tones, and no long-term pixel burn in.
- microSD slot for additional storage.
- Great camera.
- Unlockable bootloader if you want to use third-party OS firmware.
- FM radio.
- Remote control app.

Cons: - Older Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU (not Snapdragon 600 found in newer devices).
- Display has poor off-angle contrast. Looks great when looking directly facing it.
- Battery life not great, but similar to other devices in the same class.
- Gets pretty warm under extended use.

Other Thoughts: This is the only device on the U.S. market which supports both T-Mobile and AT&T LTE, while also giving you all the other high end specifications with a microSD slot. For me personally, I can not stand AMOLED screen's unbalanced colors. Sony's Andoid skin is minimal, and actually adds some useful shortcuts and functionality.

A great devices if you are need a microSD slot and 1080p sceen.
