4 out of 5 eggsQuality RPG

Pros: Fun RPG that allows class changing to experiment and mix aspects of certain classes to make a stronger character. A decent amount of classes so you won't have to be stuck with the all too well known priest/warrior/thief/mage archetypes...though they are certainly there as well. Good character customization allows for a more diverse feeling than most RPGs have to offer.

Cons: Can feel very easy if you have any knowledge of RPGs especially once you start experimenting with class changing. Enemy diversity is rather weak. The dialog is a bit hard to follow at times since Square Soft tried to emulate some very dramatic English accents.

The story follows a somewhat linear path until you get the boat and then you are left wondering where to go and what to do. This could easily lead you to areas where you could face very high level enemies.

Other Thoughts: Not sure if I would suggest this game as a first RPG or not. It's easy enough to quality but it can also be a little confusing at times due to the boat and poor description of certain game mechanics involving the party system, class changing and class skill trees. So, I'll have to say this is probably an intermediate RPG.

That all being said, it is pretty fun and entertaining.

4 out of 5 eggsenjoyable

Pros: traditional jRPG
not as primitive feeling as earlier DQ games (last I played was VII)
game has come a long way graphically

Cons: on-line feature does not include multiplayer- mutiplayer is connect to local DS's only.
unless you exploit alchemy, buying new equipment every town requires lots of grinding.
game was made to follow a set path through the story, but this direction is lost once you get the boat and you have a tendancy to run into monsters that are too strong or too weak for your party.

Other Thoughts: I held off on buying this game for a long time mostly to how everyone who owns it brings up the multiplayer aspect- they make a big deal out of it. After playing, its not a requirement at all. Pleasantly surprised by what I was playing. Traditional jRPGs are nearly extinct on consoles and despite its simple mass appeal nature, its not bad at all and I had a lot of fun playing it.

5 out of 5 eggsBest RPG on the DS

Pros: Dragon Quest IX has everything I wanted in an RPG, customization, exploration, humor, length, simplicity, and the newly introduced multiplayer. From clothes to classes, everything about the characters in your party is chosen by you! The world hands down the largest out of any DS game I have ever played, and not to mention absolutely gorgeous! I have been playing for over 100 hours and I have yet to explore every cave or crevice. The size and length of this game may seem daunting, but don't be afraid. Dragon Quest IX is extremely light hearted and simple to comprehend.

Cons: Little to no character development, but that's the trade for customization. Grinding may be a chore for some, although you very rarely have to. I wish the multiplayer could have wifi, but local is alright.

Other Thoughts: If you liked Dragon Quest VIII or you want a great RPG for your DS, get this! Take a look at the other Dragon Quest releases for DS as well.

2 out of 5 eggsMeh...

Pros: Maybe the multiplayer options?

Cons: There is absolutely nothing about this game that makes it stand out as an RPG. Take any really great RPG and strip it of all its unique and creative elements and you have Dragon Quest IX. The game was way too easy and the monster variety is lame at best. I could never bring myself to play this game for more than 30 minutes at a time because it was just too boring. I actually found myself switching over Final Fantasy VII on my PSP, a game that I have beaten dozens of times. If this is your first RPG, I'd look elsewhere. If you already have experience with RPGs you will find nothing new here.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for an RPG that will take you forever to beat because you just can't bring your self to actually turn it on then look no further. IMO, this game is maybe worth 10 bucks... I got hosed and if you buy this game you will too.
