Features
Developed by Amsterdam-based Guerrilla, Killzone PS3 is a military first-person shooter that builds upon the 2004 PlayStation title. A non-linear and intensely cinematic gameplay experience that combines elements from multiple genres, Killzone thrusts players even deeper into the conflict between the ISA and Helghast. Set in a rich and highly interactive world, the game aims to set the benchmark for facial and character animation, advanced physics, destructible environments, sound and special FX. Combining on-foot and vehicle combat across air, land, and sea, with both off-line play and a customizable on-line portion, Killzone should be one of the premier shooters of the next-generation.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Game

Pros: Awesome graphics. Awesome weapons, Very good AI, great campaign with a decent story.

Cons: Controls take some getting used to. Environment is so detailed that you can easily become disoriented when first playing. My girlfriend hates watching me play because of the dark mood and violence.

Other Thoughts: I was very impressed with this game. It was difficult to get used to the controls, but after an hour or two I got the hang of it and the payoff was a very challenging realistic seeming shooter that is a little bit different than anything I had played before. Unlike many other reviewers, I actually liked the story and it made me want to keep playing. I shuffle back and forth between games depending on what I am in the mood to play, and the Killzone series now takes up probably 75% of my playing time. This game is an amazing deal for the "Greatest Hits" price.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but certainly not the Best thing I've ever played

Pros: The Graphics in this game are quite decent, yet I wouldn't say they were as breathtaking as some other games I've seen.

AI was quite impressive in my opinion. I was surprised to how they moved and reacted to my presence. Overall it felt like genuine people were fighting back instead of hordes of obvious scripted NPCs. Haven't noticed that kind of AI since I played FEAR.

Some of the weapons were a plain old blast to use. Reminded me vaguely of the turok days where you had ridiculous weaponry to use against your enemies. Of course there was more than your fair share of standard assault rifles, but to those who have played the game, you probably understand what I'm referring to.

Some of the animations/cutscenes were also pretty impressive. There wasn't that obvious difference you get when you look at a cutscene and then gameplay, it was overall consistent and was quite pretty.

Cons: My biggest gripe would be the single player campaign. The story was essentially non-existent. This may be a result of me not playing the first one, but I can usually pick up what is going on pretty well. All I got from this however was a rehashed telling of the same old Call of Duty scenario. Not to mention the constantly reused dialog when you are fighting and stereotypical characters.

Going back to the graphics, yes they were pretty but overall I would say they use the same old dirty gritty environments that I've seen in Gears of War and Call of Duty. Not really a bad thing, but nothing new in my opinion. And to all of those raving about how great this game looks: You do realize that its only shown in 720P right? Sony does that to a lot of their games to boost frame rates.

Gameplay is tough. Namely the controls. Never before have I had such a hard time with an FPS' control system. It's sluggish to the point that it doesnt go away.

Other Thoughts: Overall a decent shooter for the PS3. I purchased a PS3 a few months ago for a top quality Blu Ray player that also could play some select game titles, Killzone 2 and MGS4 were the two games I got with it. People have told me that this was easily the greatest game they have ever played. I sincerely hope they play more games in their time because this is not that great of a benchmark. Decent yes, worth buying at the current price? Also yes. Best thing I've played in years? Far from it. This game is essentially Gears of War but shot from a Call of Duty perspective. I know others will whole heartedly disagree and I don't expect everyone to jump on my side, but mind you this is just my opinion. People's taste in games very quite a bit.

In short, challenging game that attempts a bit too hard to be realistic, but is still enjoyable with decent visuals, weaponry, and AI. Multiplayer is fun when you have people to play with, story is very weak.

4 out of 5 eggsA great, if unoriginal, game

Pros: A solid shooter with refined and weighty controls. The game is low on story, but the set battles are suitably rough and adrenaline-pumping. The cover mechanic is extremely well-done - the crouch mechanic doubles as an impressively versatile cover button, whether that cover comes in the form of a wall, a stack of wood, some sheet metal, or a concrete divider. From there, you can blindfire or pop out to get a better shot. It's especially during these moments that the amazing character animations can be appreciated, as well.

The multiplayer is the true strength of the game; the modes are standard fare - deathmatch, capture the flag, etc. - but the game ingeniously integrates one gametype into another on the same map, in real time. This gives battles a serious sense of realism - one moment you're capturing a territory, and the next you must defend a VIP. This also highlights the versatility of the various maps (of which there are plenty, with even more in the form of downloadable maps.)

Cons: The single-player campaign is extremely lacking in substance. It's clear that the focus was on the multiplayer, and that the single-player was only created as a way to get the player used to the controls...

...of which there are major differences between single and multiplayer. In the single-player campaign, the shooting, movement, and turning mechanics are all noticeably more sluggish than in other shooters. While this reviewer thinks it helps to add a real sense of weight and body to the character (as opposed to simply being "a disembodied arm and gun"), others have reasonably seen it as needlessly hampering.

Because of firmware updates and the like, the movement in multiplayer has helped to greatly reduce this sluggishness, and to great effect - since multiplayer is inherently more action-focused, it's no surprise that more brisk movement speeds would be required.

Other Thoughts: The graphics are downright amazing. There are rarely any moments of screen tearing or texture pop-in, light is reflected and distorted well through smoke, through water, and even through the green-tinted scope of your default assault rifle - even while aiming down the sights, the scope reflects and distorts minor details that lie behind the character.

The sound is equally superb. Each weapon sounds suitably powerful, and the heavy thud of your boots, coupled with the slightly-delayed movement, makes the game feel all the more real.

5 out of 5 eggsBEST game i've played

Pros: Well, I play a TON of PS3 games. This one is definitely the most fun I have ever played. It is SO realistic and the graphics are amazing. COD's are pretty good compared to this one and are slightly more realistic based on the enemies you fight, but Killzone 2 is SO much more fun. It has its scary moments, but they are scary moments that you appreciate. Gives you a "wow! i can't believe the designers did that!" feeling. Nothing major jumps out and scares you, just the evil moments of the game that give you a smirk!

Cons: Aiming can be tough to get used to, but you will.

Loading new areas has a .5 second delay, but it doesn't annoy you, it is always after/before a battle in a very safe area where you don't mind resting. It's still ONLY .5 seconds though.

Other Thoughts: If you have a PS3, this game is a MUST have if you like fps. Hook it up to an HDTV with an HDMI cable and you will be playing with a grin on your face for hours on end!

5 out of 5 eggskiller

Pros: One of the best console games I have ever played. The single-player campaign is intense and worth the money alone. Amazing graphics, makes call of duty look dated.

Cons: I didn't get this game sooner. I also wish it had co-op.

Other Thoughts: Working on veteran mode now, intense!

4 out of 5 eggsGood game

Pros: It's a fun game, I thoroughly enjoyed the single player campaign, and thought the graphics were pretty good. The colors are very well done

Cons: Multiplayer, imo, it seems too slow paced compared to other shooters you play. The aiming system is sluggish....

Other Thoughts: To the people who claim this game has better graphics than crysis. Hook your ps3 up to 1080p LCD monitor, not a tv where you stand a couple feet back. And game at the same distance you do with any other pc game. The film grain effect is very evident, the motion blur attempts hide most of the bad textures from afar, and even up close the textures are not that great, and character models are blurry and jagged. It has good graphics for a console game... But seriously... don't compare it to Crysis unless you run it at 1280x1024, low-medium settings w/ no AA.
