The TV-IP512P Internet camera offers extra security for your home, business, or vacation house. This Power over Ethernet (PoE) camera needs no separate power connection, and features 16X digital zoom, so you always get a clear view. The video capture is recorded to your computer or NAS device, so you've got a permanent record.

With 2-way audio, you can monitor workmen, inform intruders that the police are on the way, shoo away interloping animals, or break up your teenager's unauthorized party. It's useful AND amusing!

The included IPViewPro software offers scheduled recording, motion-triggered recording, and email alerts, to let you know when there's been activity on your property. This software allows you to view and record up to 32 cameras simultaneously. The camera can even email you a snapshot of activity in progress. The TV-IP512P gives you a set of eyes and ears on the scene, so you know everything's running smoothly, even when you're not there!

3 out of 5 eggsTwo-way audio is not exactly straightforward

Pros: Price.

Cons: Image resolution is typical of this level of camera. Storage to SD limits various trigger (or event) capabilities. Lack of schedule granularity.

Other Thoughts: It's hard to justify the price for some of the higher end cameras, but there is really a difference. These "consumer grade" cameras have a few features, but they really end up lacking in a variety of surveillance applications. Consider schedules - I don't want a motion detection event emailing me a picture every time someone walks through the door during business hours - just after hours. Or: I'd like to have my local SD storage work for scheduled events. I'd also like to be able to ID someone at 25 yards and read their license plate - not so much with this one.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine

Pros: Easy setup (Win 7 x64 for me) out of the box, either wired or wireless n. Good resolution, even in lower light. Also supports RTSP (TCP video streaming) via port 554. The Trendnet smartphone free apps are simple, but do the job. Does have motion sensing and audio. The camera has various I/O ports (RS485, etc.) for controlling other equipment. The lens is removable. Has SD slot. There is an optional enclosure for outdoor mounting.

Cons: Manual focus. No optical zoom. No pan and tilt. The software will do 16x digital zoom though, but so can most software media players. The camera has a microphone, but no external speaker (It has an audio "line out" port). The provided PC software is nothing special. Not for use in below freezing temperatures.

Other Thoughts: I will buy a few more of these cameras at some point.

1 out of 5 eggsSoftware issues

Pros: Cameras work as described
Software is easy to set up

Cons: Software shuts itself down at midnight every night
TrendNet Help Desk has yet to respond (1 month and counting)
Looking at buying working software, so we can USE the cameras 24X7

4 out of 5 eggsGreat IP PoE Indoor Camera

Pros: This is a great Indoor IP PoE camera. I picked it up during a special promo for less than $80. I have it running off of a Cisco SG300-28P (802.3af) switch and using BlueIris software to capture the video. The lens it came with (6mm) was too narrow of a view for my purpose but luckily it can be changed with any CS mount lens. I picked up a wide-angle 2.1mm lens from an online auction site for $15. The mount it comes with is of good quality for indoor mounting. When pointing the camera outside through a window the image was blown away. I downloaded the latest firmware from Trendnet which gave me the option for "outdoor" so the camera will adjust for outside light. This is also useful if you decide to put the camera in an outdoor enclosure for outdoor use.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsNice IP Camera

Pros: Plugged it into my switch and hooked up the wall wart and fired up the software and presto! It works! I also downloaded TrendNet's Proview software for the iPhone and it works like a charm. You will need to know how to set up port forwarding on your router to make this work correctly.

Cons: I couldn't figure out how to make the sound work both ways, ie. speak into my iphone through the app and have it come out of the camera? I thought it had a built in speaker but maybe it doesn't. I can hear from the built in speaker but not the other way around. Perhaps I missed something here on how this would work. The manual is a little sparse as well.

4 out of 5 eggsTV-IP512P - Nice

Pros: PoE compliant ! I tried it with a Poe switch and a spair injector and it worked great.
good image quality for the money and the software is not bad, I have it running on server 2008 with no issues.
the web server works well enough and is easy to set up.
so far I've had no problems with the cam or software. the replacable factory lense is not bad, I tried two others I had includeing a zoom but kept the original.
phone apps for real time streaming is nice.
email notifications with a snap shot for motion detection, ect.

all this is just the out of the box experience I will update if needed. it's been running for a couple days.

Cons: I would not pay the normal price but it's worth the 80 bones on sale.
my now getting old Logitech 9000 web cam has a better picture.
the field of view is a little on the narrow side.

Other Thoughts: update the frimware! I also had to do a hard reset after the update, not a good thing but it came out OK.
I really like PoE it's so much easier if installed in a out of the way place without a power option but true PoE equipment is required.
using the factory power supply with a PoE power adapter will not work it requires the standard 48 Volts.

3 out of 5 eggsOK but with problems

Pros: Good cheap IP camera when it works.

Cons: Pitfalls to avoid. Software is buggy, and it only allows you to view on one computer at a time. If you try to view this camera with another computer, even through the web browser, camera will lock up. The only way I've seen to fix this is to physically cut the power to the camera to reset. Make sure that you are only viewing with one computer/software setup when it comes back online or you're back to cutting the power again.

Firmware updates are flaky. Camera might not reboot itself after wards with no indication if it is done with the firmware update or not. Once again you have to cut the power and hope it was done. Proceed at your own risk, between the buggy software crashing, (hopefully not in the middle of the firmware update!) and the flaky update process, approximately 1 in 10 in my experience become expensive paperweights. This is out of a batch of 40 we bought.

4 out of 5 eggs...continued

Pros: Following up on my last review I installed the latest firmware update and it fixed the problem with outdoor viewing. There is a checkbox for "outdoor". Another plus is the ability to select shutter speeds which provides an image under very low light conditions.

Cons: Bright spots in the image appear blurred. The contrast and saturation controls have only 4 presets.

Other Thoughts: Overall, for the money this camera is a step ahead of the competition. I own seven different brands of cameras and while this one was a little more money the performance with the CS lens is good enough to justify this difference in cost. A better image might be possible with more control over contrast and saturation. I am favorably impressed with Trendnet because of their commitment to continue to support products that have already been sold. So many companies never provide firmware upgrades and customers are stuck with a device that could function better with support from the manufacturer. One more thought, does an IP camera really need an SD card? I record everything on my computer and can't really see myself climbing up on a ladder regularly to change the card. Could the cost be made lower by eliminating the SD hardware?

2 out of 5 eggsBad so far

Pros: I just got this camera today and set it up on the bench and I was amazed at the fantastic picture. Very clear and it didn't wash out when pointed up toward a bright window. The lens and the camera are solid and feel like quality.

Cons: I set this camera up pointing outside next to my Dlink 910 to compare the low light capability since the Dlink has had the best picture under my metal halide lighting than any other cheap camera I have bought. This Trendnet though, shows only a pure white screen when pointed outside. It is a north window, no direct sun but the picture is totally washed out and none of the brightness or contrast controls has any effect.

Other Thoughts: I am going to keep this camera set up tonight to test it's low light capability. It should show a picture later in the day when the outside light gets weaker since it worked inside. Tomorrow I will bring it back to the bench and install the latest firmware to see if it will fix the problem. Also, you don't get POE unless you buy an injector. I haven't tried the software since I use Blue Iris for all my cameras.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat camera

Pros: This camera does not need to be hooked up to a PC and offers many customizable features such as motion detection triggers and the ability to record to any shared drive. Can hear sounds even when it is inside the outdoor housing unit.

Cons: It was a little tricky to setup and focus needs to be done manually, but worked the way we wanted it to once it was setup. We had to purchase a housing unit to put it outside. Wireless didn't work for our application since the distance between the camera and the router was too great, so we hardwired it.

Other Thoughts: I plan on purchasing more of these cameras.
