1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI Day/Night, 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: This is a tough one... It works? Kinda?

Maybe for $9.99 it'd be worth it...

Cons: Almost unusable due to excessive noise on audio channel. I mean, it obliterates everything else. A constant static/chop noise that will drive anyone insane. It's obviously tied to the WiFi as it sends data. So, it's a design issue at the Layer 0/1 level and won't be resolved with a firmware update. They need to replace them all. AKA: recall.

Also, the setup could be better.

Other Thoughts: How to make it work with WiFi (I have a Windows 8.1 64-bit machine):

1) Follow software to install and initiate WiFI.
2) Power cycle camera.
3) Change channels on WiFi router (one could also power cycle it) as this causes the device to renegotiate onto the network.
4) Exit out of the software, if you want to, you can start the software again and it should scan and find the camera this time.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We apologize for the experience you’re having with the camera and we’d like to make it right. Please email me at Adrian@trendnet.com with your contact information and a link to this review.

2 out of 5 eggsVideo is good sound is bad

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI Day/Night, 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Easy Setup and good video quality, LEDs can be turned off, small form factor.

Cons: Getting a lot of feedback noise on both wired and wireless connection. I updated to the latest firmware which did not help. I am using this as a baby cam so I was looking forward to using the audio but with the noise its just not possible.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend if planning on using audio

Manufacturer Response:

I understand and you are correct, it is an unpleasant experience to hear noise. Please email me directly at adrian@trendnet.com with “Newegg TV-IP551WI review” in the subject line and I will contact you to resolve this issue ASAP.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Camera

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI Day/Night, 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: It works! Being used as a nanny cam. At full 20 fps, is pretty steady over my wifi. Night Vision is bright for what I use it for.

Cons: Power light and activity light are bright and can't be disabled by a setting. It actually kept my baby up at night with the amount of light this thing emits. Just taped over that led. Obviously not the IR ones though. Disabled sound because its horrible. I had a audio baby monitor already, so I just continued to use that. So far it has only locked up on me once in 2 months, hopefully that was a fluke.

Other Thoughts: I use my android phone or web browser to peek on my daughter to see if she is awake. No more tip toeing around or having to listen closely at her audio baby monitor. I use my VPN connection for when I am outside of my wifi to connect. Due to what I use this for, the only software I use is the TrendnetView app on my phone.

4 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI Day/Night, 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Easy to Setup, image quality is OK.

Cons: A bit difficult to focus. DC Power Cable could have been longer. I wanted to mount this over a doorway, using a standard wall outlet. I'll need to make a longer DC cable, but no big deal.

Other Thoughts: Remember to upgrade the firmware right away.

I had no problems using the included software to setup the camera. After removing the network port, camera signed onto WiFi automatically.

Unit is a bit bigger than I was expecting

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI Day/Night, 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Price and usefulness of the device. Offsite FTP/Email upload in conjunction with the motion detection makes for a great security device. Pretty configurable as well.

Cons: Setup software had mildly confusing moments, but nothing a person with basic (networking) knowledge couldn't get past. If you're familiar with setting your computers/devices up to your router/access point it shouldn't be a problem.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this device as a superior version to what I was using a Raspberry Pi to do at the same price ($35). Records motion and uploads the images offsite to create a backed up webstream of events unfolding in its field of vision. Pretty flexible for a consumer device, makes it nice for programmatic purposes.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat wifi camera night or day

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI Day/Night, 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Simple to setup. Works great day or night. Easy to configure. You do need some basic networking knowledge if you are going to open router ports for external viewing.

Cons: Trendnet software very limited. Using blue iris instead for DVR, motion detection, and triggers.

Short power cord. No PoE.

Other Thoughts: If you want an inconspicuous camera the white face can be hard to hide. I removed the face and painted it flat black which blends in better for my application.

I only wish the camera provided an easy way to mount outside. The power adapter limits this so I have to mount it inside near a wall outlet.

1 out of 5 eggsCheap, but problematic.

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI Day/Night, 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Installation was easy if you follow the directions.

Cons: Upgraded the firmware to the latest, but the audio issues reported on the internet were not fixed "wooshing sound every .5 sec). Camera motion detection does not work. Software motion detection does not work properly at night.

Other Thoughts: Limited field of vision, about 30x30 from a distance of 20 feet. Fisheye lens would be better for most applications.

Cheap for sure, but you get what you pay for. Get something better.

1 out of 5 eggsCheap china junk! Don't spend your money and time!

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI Day/Night, 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: none

Cons: setup is a nightmare! quality very poor! makes a constant noise when switching modes! bright neon light 24/7 in your room - so everyone knows where your camera is located and when it is on, so easy to disable it!

Other Thoughts: Don't spend a dime on this cheap junk! Plus it will take so much time to make it run... Worthless! Wouldn't even give one egg - zero - that's a real number!

4 out of 5 eggs"cam"-parably good

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI Day/Night, 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: - Video quality is very good at 640x480 for both day and night vision
- Features
- Simple setup
- iphone and ipad support
- Price was the cheapest at newegg (bought 2!!!!)
- Free shipping upgraded for independence day
- Easy setup with uverse modem for dmz viewing

Cons: - Mount is cheap
- Securview pro is very buggy on windows 8 (had to reinstall several times)
- securview on ipad does not work though trendnet's site confirm support for this model. had to use IP cam
- Instructions/Manual is ambigous at times
- activex control does not work (java worked on window 8 and linux)
- Trendnet support is horrible

Other Thoughts: After watching the price dip and doing a risk assessment on whether i should buy this due to security issue posted at #TrendnetExposed (twitter), i decided to go with it and I'm fairly happy with the purchase. The video quality is good compared to some. Had some issue with the focus but was able to resolve it (maybe some complaining about video quality needs to do the focus and they need to do it very slowly). had it setup internally and externally via dmz port forwarding on the uverse modem. If you have a dvr, it'll be a lot simpler. Overall, this a great buy for the price. Hopefully trendnet fixes some bugs with software on the device and for the management. Techsupport thinks all users are stupid.

Thanks Newegg for bumping to faster shipping free of charge!
