TV-IP851WIC Wireless Day / Night PTZ Cloud Camera

TRENDnet Logo

TRENDnet's Wireless N Day / Night PTZ Cloud Camera, model TV-IP851WIC, takes the work out of viewing video over the internet. Previously to view video remotely, users needed to perform many complicated and time consuming steps: such as signing up for a third party dynamic IP service and reconfiguring their router. The TRENDnet Cloud service removes all of these complicated steps. Users simply open a web browser and log into the TRENDnet Cloud with their unique password to view and manage this camera. Record crisp video in complete darkness for distances of up to 7.5 meters. A free app for mobile devices brings live video to smart phones and tablets.

About the TV-IP851WIC

Pan the camera side-to-side a remarkable 340° and tilt up-and-down 115° from any internet connection. Record crisp video in complete darkness for distances of up to 7.5 meters. Wireless n technology connects the camera to a wireless network and provides unsurpassed wireless coverage and improved streaming video quality. Add this camera to your wireless network at the touch of a button with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). The TV-IP851WIC offers 640 x 480 (VGA) video at up to 20 frames per second (fps), one-way audio, an adjustable lens, motion detection recording, scheduled recordings, email alerts, pan / tilt Auto-Patrol, date and time overlay, and four times digital zoom. A wall / ceiling mounting kit is included and the camera's off white housing blends into most environments.

3 out of 5 eggsEh.

Pros: Functional camera, more or less. The idea that you could view and control the camera from anywhere is a nice thought, that this camera sometimes delivers.

Cons: I found the interfaces (mobile and desktop) to be clunky and buggy. So much so- that after over a year of progressively more issues, I finally gave up on it.

Other Thoughts: I will probably spend more on something a little more tried and true.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsWouldnt connect after a day

Pros: Seems solid and well constructed. Image quality was good. Install was easier than I expected.

Cons: It wouldn't stay connected longer than a day. Every time I got it working again (after re-installing) it would work for a few hours then it wouldn't connect to the "cloud" anymore. Kind of pointless if you can't see the image. I tried installing using the cable and wifi, same thing....after a day at most it no longer would connect.

Other Thoughts: I hoped installing the updated firmware would help, but it made no difference, The longest it lasted was about 24 hours.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Image,,but

Pros: Easy setup, great image, quick ship, easy to use remote/phone app.

Cons: Requires DDNS to control remotely. Incorrect information from telephone support. No response from online case opened with Trendnet support.

Other Thoughts: Had called Trendnet support before purchasing to verify only thing needed was an Internet connection and no port forwarding or ddns were needed to control the camera and stream video, was told only thing needed was an Internet connection. The ‘cloud’ is all that was needed.
Set these up at my second property and enabled the motion detection with email notification, which was very painless. Shortly after getting back home my email began getting hammered with emails from the camera(s). No biggie, I’ll just use my remote app and dial down the sensitivity. But NO, what worked locally did not work when connecting from the Internet. Opened a case online with Trendnet for help but a week later, no response. Broke down and read the users manual which states ddns is required. In my case these are connected to the Internet via a hotspot which does not support ddns, which is why I called their support before purchasing. Not happy with the support from Trendnet.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello bsaylors,

Remote viewing can be accomplished with the Cloud service. For remote access to the management interface you do need to have access to the camera. For direct access to the camera you will need to know what the current public IP address is on your router and a port will need to be forwarded. DDNS is an option for this. Unfortunately management of the camera requires a greater amount of access than viewing. We apologize for the misunderstanding and thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Looks mechanically robust, if only it worked

Cons: Wouldn't install or connect to WiFi. Product support was no help. Invested 5 hours banging head against the wall!. Installation software asked to download new firmware but the link never connected to Trendiest. Router indicates unit was permanently "offline"

Other Thoughts: Newegg wants me to pay $11 to ship defective unit back

2 out of 5 eggsNot that easy

Pros: Decent picture for the price

Cons: Hours trying to set up, and still not fully operational

Other Thoughts: Bought this to replace baby monitor, but I have spent about three hours so far trying to get it to work on iphone. Got it to link to Ipad via wifi, but wont work on Iphone via 4g. In addition, now image is black and white all the time, and there is no sound, even though it is enabled.

Had a zmoda camera which was even worse than this on.
Does a wifi camera that is plug and play even exist?

Manufacturer Response:

Hello JP,

Please ensure you have the correct app installed. For Cloud Cameras it is the TRENDnet CloudView app. When adding the camera just use the 8 digit number in the custom URL printed on the label. The camera needs to have access to the Internet for you to be able to access it from your mobile network. Double check to ensure the camera has been assigned a valid network address. The black and white image occurs when the camera is in infrared mode for night viewing. The light sensor to trigger day/night mode is in the center right above the lens. If you need assistance with the camera please email and we’ll have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

4 out of 5 eggsGood camera for the price

Pros: -Price
-Cloud functionality
-Surprisingly good picture
-fairly easy setup
-very wide viewable range
-Night vision works well

Cons: -Phone App
-Somewhat large and kind of noisy during movement.
-Internal MIC is pretty terrible but it does the job
-No easy way to record video

Other Thoughts: I got this to scan my house in case me home alarm goes off so i can see if someone is actually inside or if something got tripped accidentally. I have no real desire to record video so this was a perfect choice for me. You have to manually adjust the focus on the unit by turning the little plastic circle around the lens, so the people saying that the picture is terrible are probably just dumb. The digital zoom is all but worthless, but this is true of anything running below full HD. The only real complaint I have with this thing is the phone app. You can't adjust any settings from it and you can't access your preset location settings, and panning with it is pretty close to torture. It would be an easy thing to fix I would think, so I don't know why they haven't done it. However the cloud connection software, which seems to work only with JAVA installed on you machine, works flawlessly. I click the swing button and it pans back and forth to every entrance in my house automatically. You can set up as many pan locations as you could possibly want. If they updated the near worthless phone app so you could use the swing function I would have given it 5 eggs, the other issues are nit-picky at best for this price point.

4 out of 5 eggsNice camera for the price

Pros: Price, flexibility, wireless internet connection, pan and scan, email alerts, good night vision, ease of setup, configurable to shut off led's

Cons: email alert triggered when camera switches from day to night mode and back again, low definition camera (this was expected so really should not be a con), Needs a solid wifi connection for reliable operation ( I suspect they eat some bandwidth), the zoom is somewhat worthless because of the low definition.

Other Thoughts: For the price I like and would recommend the camera. I like the flexibility to be able to move them to other locations with ease. The email alert function is very useful but you do have to learn what causes a false trigger such as light changes and day to night mode changes.

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away

Pros: Software is okay. Easy to set up.

Cons: Can't see any images clearly in day mode and camera is totally useless in night mode. Just completely forget about the zoom.

Other Thoughts: Spend a bit more money and get a lot more camera.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello HK,

The camera supports up to 640 x 480 resolution at up to 20 FPS. If you were looking for a camera with higher resolution please check out the TV-IP862IC. It supports up to 1280 x 720 resolution at up to 30 FPS. If you are having issues configuring or accessing the camera to view the live stream we would be more than happy to assist you. 1 out of 5 eggsNo Support and Poor Quality

Pros: The color is white and easy to match with a room

Cons: I spent 2 hours configuring and 1.5 hours on the phone with support. In the end I was told, "sometimes it will work and sometimes it will not work." The GUI is missing a lot of information. The firmware upgrade took six tries, before it would start. Support was no help, they do not listen, do not understood, and don't call you back. Online support never did get back to me.

Other Thoughts: paying for returning this product is not fun.

Manufacturer Response:
