Pros: Plays blu rays

Cons: Sony warranty kicks in after 1 year and it loses the ability to run Netflix or another company's video service Prime.

3 out of 5 eggsSome minor issues

Pros: The functionality is very good as far as menus and preloaded apps. DVDs play well and the 3D quality is excellent. Remote is easy to understand and it has dedicated controls for Netflix and Sony Entertainment Network.

Setting up with a network (wireless or cabled) is pretty simple and the menu offers a manual and auto feature that makes it even easier.

The unit is compact and easy to connect. It is very nice looking with almost any other components and is easy to clean.

Cons: It has an auto shut off feature that you cannot disable and It has to reconnect to the network every time it is turned on which slows down using the unit and one connection function requires that you acknowledge that is completed connection before it continues.

The search feature is OK (even though it is set up on screen as a QWERTY keyboard even though it is controlled with the remote) but does not have an auto search to make suggestions as you type. If you misspell or hit a wrong key you are usually out of luck.

The biggest issue is that the unit will sometimes freeze-up when streaming video (sometimes on loading but mostly if you fast forward through the end credits) and has to be cold booted. The power chord is hard wired to the back of the unit so unplugging requires access to the wall socket each time.

Other Thoughts: It has a lot of quirks but overall I am satisfied and haven't had any major issues since activating the unit 6 months ago.

5 out of 5 eggsSony BDP-S950

Pros: Great Blu Ray player. Streams Netflix movies with no lag, very clear image watching House of Cards, etc..
I need to only use the buttons on the unit itself for watching autoplay Blu-Rays I burn with Sony Vegas Pro

Cons: slow to boot up from cold? Slow to play a Blu-Ray when you first insert it.

Other Thoughts: why is this selling for so much when original list price was $uno hundred and fiffty ? I bought mine reconditioned from New Egg for half that price.

1 out of 5 eggsSony Blu Ray

Pros: The movie quality has been good, except when streaming Netflix, HULU + etc....

Cons: Mu open/close mechanism has jammed for some reason. My Blu Ray of the "Empire Strikes Back " is stuck... I have tried the remote. The buttons on the unit are USELESS. The buttons on the unit are poorest I have ever seen. The remote is upside down from our normal remotes. Bought it at Best Buy 8 months ago. ready to ditch for another.. NO MORE SONYS!!!!!.

5 out of 5 eggsSONY Blu-ray Player works as billed

Pros: We bought this unit to replace a Samsung Blu-ray player that was having difficulty playing several of the newer titles released. This player has performed very well and has had no issues playing all titles currently owned. The built-in wifi also works very well and easily retrieves firmware updates and extra content for blu-ray titles.

As expected, easy hook-up and worked within minutes.

Cons: None noted thus far.

Other Thoughts: As always, wonderful service by Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Blu-ray Player w/ Wi-Fi

Pros: Great picture and easy set up for Wi-Fi connections to Netflix and other streaming services. There were absolutely no problems setting up the BDP-S590 player. It was almost as easy to set up as an Apple TV I use in another room.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I had been using an older Sony Blu-ray player but wanted to be able to stream Netflix content. I read the descriptions of quite a few other Blu-ray players, and found many were Wi-Fi ready, but did not have Wi-Fi built in. Their ads don't often make this distinction and failing to read the full description can lead to being the victim of a rip-off. I decided on the Sony BDP-S590 because I wanted to be able to go to a 3D TV in the future if I wanted. I made the right decision, and feel it was the best thing to do. If 3D builds I will be ready, having only to replace the TV, not both the TV and Blu-ray player.
