1 out of 5 eggsGreat when it worked...

Pros: Sounds great when paired with my Polk speakers.
Lots of HDMI inputs.

Cons: I first purchased this unit on 4/20/2013. So I've owned it for just over a year and today it died on me. It completely refuses to power on or do anything except be a giant paper weight.

Very disappointed considering how expensive these receivers are.

Other Thoughts: I'm getting in touch with Yamaha since these receivers have a 2 year warranty. We'll see if I get anywhere with them.

5 out of 5 eggsTotally Satisfied

Pros: The sound from this receiver is nothing short of incredible. Even my speakers from the late 1990s sound great, though I'll be shopping for newer speakers shortly. The receiver is very easy to configure, though the options are limited when not using the HDMI output.
The receiver also has an app available on the major platforms, and this is nice when the kids lose the remote control.
Configuring the Wifi adapter is painless if you have a laptop handy. Just follow the directions and disable the laptop's wireless adapter.

Cons: I'd like to see every configurable option available through the phone app. Sometimes I just want to tweak a few settings without having to turn on the television.

2 out of 5 eggsNice receiver but poor Yamaha Support, limited sound programs

Pros: Good connectivity
Quality picture and sound
Easy setup
Two zone operation

Cons: Sound programs are not very diverse, you only end up using a select few.
No support for Spotify,Rdio or other popular music services. Only Pandora Rhapsody and Sirius and their own radio. They recently updated software for next series of receivers to include spotify but excluded this receiver, poor after sale support from Yamaha. I inquired with Yamaha and they said no even though this is one month old and supports wifi and Ethernet for easy software upgrades. Won't buy Yamaha again, going with Onkyo who does better job with better sound programs with THX.

3 out of 5 eggsLow-end???

Pros: Plenty, if only the stupid things were a distraction. This is a follow-up to my original review.

Cons: Firmware and software a bit hinky. And that whole Zone 2 fiasco.

Other Thoughts: Last night I couldn't select AirPlay from the input selection knob, but I could select it using the iPhone. And when I tried the A/V controller app on my wife's Samsung S4 it took many tries just to connect. The two devices may have been battling for control. The receiver only permits one to control it.

But oh, the Zone 2 thing... I contacted Yamaha to ask if a firmware update could allow analog sources on Zone 2. Here is what they said:

"No updates would enable the routing of digital sources to Zone 2. The only receivers that do that are the RX-A2030 and RX-A3030 at this time. We are always pushing for that in the lower models."

Maybe I'm naive but I'm having trouble thinking of an $899 receiver as a "lower model"!!!

And at the risk of being pedantic, I can get AirPlay on Zone 2 and that's certainly not an analog source. I'm not impressed by stunts to cripple an obviously easy feature just to up-sell people to models twice as costly.

5 out of 5 eggsYamaha receiver

Pros: What a great deal on this Yamaha RX-V773WABL 7.2 channel receiver. Replaced my HDMI troubled Onkyo NX808 and right out of the box sounded better and the picture was better also to my Mitsubishi 3D 7800 Projector. Thanks Newegg and Yamaha---this deal was so good, ny brother (he a tech and audio/video INSTALLER bought one, too!!!

Cons: none yet---quality build and looks. Does have an external WIFI--but this $80 item comes FREE with this product.

3 out of 5 eggsNice, but a fatal and stupid flaw

Pros: Generally high-performing, lots of inputs including analog options, two HDMI outputs (more about that in a moment), two-zone support, WiFi.

Cons: No Bluetooth, no phono input and NO WAY TO PUT AUDIO FROM VIDEO SOURCES INTO ZONE 2 !!!

Other Thoughts: OK, so the RX-V773 is a great value in general, especially when being blown out at half the retail price. But why is it that Yamaha thinks North America doesn't need a phonograph input? Good thing I had a pre-amp handy.

I gripe about the Bluetooth only because after I had it all wired up, the wife asks me if it can stream audio to her Jambox. Otherwise I don't find this to be a terrible shortcoming - your mileage may vary.

But it is the Zone 2 limitations which are among one of the most IDIOTIC things I've ever witnessed. As a hardware and software engineer it truly makes my head spin in dismay...

Zone 2 will ONLY play audio from certain (essentially audio-only) sources. If you want Zone 2 to play sound from your BD player or any A/V or HDMI source, you're outta luck. I guess someone thought "well if Zone 2 doesn't have separate video support..."

Not being one to give up easy, I thought "hey I can loop the Audio Out or AV Out spigots to one of the available Audio In inputs" and get Zone 2 to play out by selecting Audio 1 or Audio 2. But no, even the Audio and AV Out spigots only carry audio from likewise analog sources.

Then I thought maybe I could use the Front Pre-Out but that doesn't seem to be available if you're set to 7-channel + extra zone.

At this point I'm ready to resort to an HDMI-analog converter and use the second HDMI output to get the analog signal into Audio-1 or Audio-2. But that means using a splitter-converter or losing an HDMI out, plus now Main and Zone 2 are no longer entirely independent.

Some propeller-beanie dude at Yamaha needs a good smack upside da' head for this. If any other owners have a clever solution I haven't thought of, I'm all ears. Really. They're very big. ;-)

5 out of 5 eggsReally great

Pros: Price

Cons: Not really anything... There could be UI tweaks in the receiver and control app for the phone.

Other Thoughts: For the price, buying this receiver is a no-brainer. I bought this from Newegg several months ago when it was on sale like this.

I love being able to stream music from Rhapsody and Pandora right on the unit. And the remote control app on my phone lets me control everything, including Rhapsody and Pandora.

Its support for 2 zones is outstanding. I'm able to stream Rhapsody in zone 2 while people are watching TV in zone 1. It works flawlessly.

Once I got it set up, the networking is working almost flawlessly. I am always able to start the unit remotely and then control all the features. Every once in a while, streaming music will stop, but it is rare enough to not bother me too much.

The sound is clear and rich. I have Definitive Tech and B&W speakers and they sound great with this receiver, better than they did compared to the Onkyo I was using before this one.

2 out of 5 eggsGood receiver but issues with ARC

Pros: 2 HDMI out, video up-scaling and iPhone / iPad remote. And ARC if it works. overall, this is a good receiver. However there are some issues. When you have a DVR connected to receiver I/P and TV connected to Receiver O/P using HDMI cable and if you switch on the TV, the receiver turns on. Good so far. You also see TV. However there is no way to get the sound. You have to "touch" the receiver (input) to get the sound. This is annoying and defeats the whole purpose of ARC. I also purchased a separate digital cable for sound but that didn't help either. Opened a ticket with Yamaha and their support was not helpful. Tried to return the receiver by filing RMA but newegg ask for 50$ shipping. This is not fair. Also I thought I got a Cyber Monday deal but the prices went down the same week. So I do not trust NewEgg sale any more. Although they do have competent pricing. But there is no big sale.

Cons: ARC does not work Yamaha support not very helpful. Zone 2 cannot play HDMI inputs. It can play only music from audio inputs.

Other Thoughts: Look for something that works 100 percent. Do your research otherwise you will be frustrated like I am. Make sure you note down all your requirements, check manual and then buy. Otherwise you will be disappointed like I am.

3 out of 5 eggsAlmost Perfect.

Pros: Passive HDMI Pass through to TV when receiver is in standby lets my wife watch TV without messing with the receiver. 2 Zone function. lots of Inputs

Cons: FM Stereo does not have a digital Tuner.

Other Thoughts: I love the capabilities of this unit, but I purchased this unit for use as both a receiver and fm stereo for music around the house. I was disappointed to find that it would not receive the local digital stations. I found the wifi adapter an unnecessary extra as I have wired connections available for it, I would have preferred a digital tuner for the price.
