The RX-A3020 is a powerful statement in the evolution of Yamaha engineering. A 9.2ch AV receiver, it offers 11.2ch expandability and superb surround sound realism with CINEMA DSP HD3. Employ powerful noise reduction functions using the HQV Vida video processor. The double bottom frame ensures optimal sound while features like AirPlay and multi-zone HDMI output provide increased flexibility. It is packed with power, has processing flexibility and every aspect of chassis construction has been engineered for enhanced performance.

AVENTAGE AV Receivers: Designed to Deliver the Highest Levels of Audio Performance

The AVENTAGE line of high-performance AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality - from materials and parts to construction, layout, vibration damping (unique foot) and "fine-tuning"the sound - is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every AVENTAGE model has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.

High Quality Parts Allow Sound Tuning for Optimum Performance

Every single part in an AV receiver affects the sound quality. For the AVENTAGE models, extra time was taken to find (or develop) exactly the parts wanted and to test them together in prototype units. This testing process allowed sound technicians to, in effect, "tune"the receiver’s sound in order to achieve the highest performance possible.

H-shaped Cross Member Frame

The interior of the receiver is reinforced with cross members in an "H" shape to provide an extremely rigid and stable frame. This reduces chassis vibration to virtually zero even during high volume output (seemingly minor vibrations can affect the sound), maintaining the highest audio quality.

Symmetrical Power Amplifier Layout

This is just one of the many design details that all combine to create a superior receiver. The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left and right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation, but also greatly improves signal-to-noise ratio and also helps to achieve a wide, open sound stage

Anti-Resonance Technology Wedge Helps to Ensure that Vibrations Do Not Affect Sound Quality

The Anti-Resonance Technology (A.R.T.) Wedge is a fifth foot in the center of the unit. It dampens vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks, as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from the speakers.

4K Pass-through and Upscaling Supports Latest High Resolution Video Formats

This AV receiver's HDMI input/output supports 4K video image pass-through. It also can perform 4K upscaling to boost a lower resolution image to super high-def resolution. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats.

HQV Vida Processor for High Resolution HD and SD Images

This AV receiver optimizes the video signals they send to the TV by using the most advanced HQV (Hollywood Quality Video) Vida processor. Supporting both SD and HD sources, this processor employs powerful noise reduction functions that even improve low-quality sources. Additional resolution enhancement functions make SD content look like HD.

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel

3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable, so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable, with no need for an extra optical cable.

Network Functions

This AV receiver provides a variety of network functions that enable you to access more sources and also enhance operation. You can connect the receiver to a PC to enjoy Internet radio and operate your system via WebBrowser Control. The AV Controller App (from iTunes App Store or Google play) lets you control various functions from your iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android devices.

AV Controller App for Easy, Convenient Operation

This AV Receiver lets you use the Yamaha AV Controller app that is downloadable from the iTunes App Store or Google play to control power on/off and volume, select input and DSP modes and operate other functions from an iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android phones. A tablet version is also available.

AirPlay Allows Streaming Music to AV receiver

This AV receiver supports AirPlay, which means it can accept wireless music streaming from an iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, as well as from iTunes on Macs or PCs. This makes it easy to enjoy music from your mobile devices or computer on your home theater system. You can view metadata such as song title, artist name, as well as album art* via the AV receiver's on-screen display.

USB Digital Connection for iPod, iPhone and iPad on the Front Panel

A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod/iPhone/iPad, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone/iPad is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference, so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver’s remote control unit to operate the iPod/iPhone/iPad music playback functions.

Multi-zone HDMI Output Provides Different AV Sources in Two Rooms

This AV receiver makes it possible to set up multi-zone systems in a variety of configurations. The second HDMI output can be assigned to another zone for enjoying that HDMI source in a different room, while maintaining full-scale surround sound in the main room.

Input Selection in HDMI Standby Through Mode

When the AV receiver is in HDMI Standby Through mode, the input source (Blu-ray Disc™ player, game console, etc.) for viewing on the monitor can be changed via the remote control. There’s no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch sources.

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation

Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver’s remote unit to control player functions like skip and stop. (All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work.)

Advanced Multi-Language GUI On-Screen Display

Yamaha’s latest Graphical User Interface has a high resolution display with clear, easy-to-use menus and also includes a selectable Status Bar that shows input source, volume level, DSP mode and audio format. The GUI provides a choice of seven languages: English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Chinese, and can be displayed over both normal and 3D pictures.

Extra-convenient SCENE PLUS

The SCENE PLUS function simplifies operation by providing one touch power-on along with selection of the desired source and the appropriate DSP programs. SCENE PLUS offers a choice of 12 SCENE selections, four of which can be assigned to the second zone in a multi-zone system. SCENE PLUS can be selected from the front panel, remote control, GUI and even from the AV Controller App.

YPAO-R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control) Sound Optimization with Multi-Point Measurement

YPAO-R.S.C. analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound at any of eight listening positions. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds.

Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging

The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed"toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Compressed Music Enhancer

When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha’s Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.

High-resolution Music Enhancer further Heightens Musicality from the Original Content

Hi-bit high-sampling extension up to 96 kHz/24-bit can be applied to lossless 44.1/48 kHz content such as from a CD (2-channel PCM) or a FLAC file for further heightening of the musicality in the original content.

Dialogue Lift and Dialogue Level Adjustment for Natural Dialogue and Vocals

Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for Presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.

CINEMA DSP HD3 Expands the Sound Field Vertically for More Thrilling and Realistic Surround Sound

CINEMA DSP HD3 literally takes the surround sound experience to new heights. By using four CINEMA DSP engines with advanced 3D processing and two front presence channels in a 9.2-channel configuration, it gives the sound field an enhanced vertical dimension for more realistic and exciting movie sound.

Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)

Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialog and vocals and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening, when you do not want to disturb others.

ECO mode lowers power consumption by 20%*

Yamaha’s new ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20%. It can be set from the top of the GUI menu. * Compared to power consumption when ECO mode is off (Yamaha measurement).

Selectable Auto Power Down

Auto Power Down lets you save energy by selecting to turn off the power after 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours.

Low Standby Power Consumption

Yamaha makes its receivers eco-friendly with a low standby power consumption of 0.1W in IR Standby mode (3W in HDMI Standby Through mode, 2W in Network Standby mode).

Intelligent Amp Assign

Intelligent Amp Assign automatically assigns amplifier channels to certain speakers, depending on what functions are selected. For example, in a 7.1-channel system, when Zone 2 is off, all 7.1 channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two Surround Back channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2, and the Main Zone will receive 5.1 channels of power. Similarly, when CINEMA DSP 3D is on, the two Front Presence speakers will be powered and not the two Surround Back speakers. When CINEMA DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Thanks to Intelligent Amp Assign, there’s no need to switch the speaker cables on the rear of the receiver—one more way Yamaha makes your life a little easier.

Aluminum Front Panel Offers Visual and Aural Benefits

All of the AVENTAGE components feature the same sleek, clean design, with an elegant aluminum front panel and silky touch volume/selector knobs. The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic radiation generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. This ensures optimum sonic performance in the widest range of installation environments.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect with unique feature.

Pros: -Onscreen menus help with some of the more complicated setup situations
-Android app for control and DLNA streaming playback of audio files locally stored on your Smart Phone is robust and not just an afterthought. (3rd party Android apps allow you to stream Smart Phone app based or subscription based music services to the a3020).
-HDMI passthrough so you can easily use the A/V devices attatched to the a3020 with just your TV's speakers (great for watching a quick youtube video without the need to power up the unit and your seven 500 watt speakers).
-"Scene" feature (speaker layout/input device/room presets) make it easy to use the unit for specfic situations, i.e. ditching the center speaker and cranking the bass when listing to music or upping the center speaker for clearer dialogue while watching movies.
-Muting or turning the volume all the way down switches the internal amp off and you can hear the relay click so it's physically disconnected from power. (My old receiver only did that when headphones where inserted). This goes along with this next point.
-You can set a default volume to use when the unit is powerd on. Setting it at "mute" saves power for the few functions (Pandora, DLNA, Apple AirPlay etc) that need the unit on but don't necessarily need to use any of the attached speakers in the room the a3020 is in.
-Included microphone and "boomerang" thing to automatically calibrate speaker placement, crossover, angle, db level, etc. After calibrating my lame entry level speakers, IMHO, music sounds balanced in my weird shaped room and movies sound great. Even though my speakers not placed in very optimum locations.
-Built in "Internet Radio" function that will find most stations that broadcast via a website address.
-Light up, programable and learning IR remote. You can even program it to control IR light-switch dimmers.
-If you run 7.1, which most A/V sources are, in the main room you can also have speakers wired to another room where you just want audio and don't need video (kitchen, deck etc.) while still allowing 2 other rooms to view audio and video (see below for more info on multi-room output).
-No noticible "input lag" while playing video games, even with video processing.
-Option for a 2nd subwoofer
-Upsacles sources to 1080p
-Can pass native 4k signals (haven't tested).

Cons: -No way to set a default "scene" that the unit will use when it is powered on. It will use the one that was last selected when the unit was turned off. Occasionally I'll start a movie on my "Music" preset and won't notice I've had the center speaker switched off until someone starts moving their lips witohut talking. (Althrough you can press a scene button on the remote/app and it will power the unit on and use that button's scene in one fell swoop it would be nice if it defaulted to the preset you use most often).
-After calibrating the speakers the unit always sets my lame entry level front speakers to "large" when they really have no business being set that way. Luckily its easy to make changes to the automatic setup.
-DLNA is for audio only, i.e. no video decoding. No biggie as there are other devices that do this better than the a3020 would.
-Upsacling video sources to 1080p seems to be "all or none". Yamaha tech said sources that are already 1080p won't have any post processing done to them but I'm not sure about that. No way to really test.

Other Thoughts: The one feautre that this unit has, that I couldn't find on any other A/V unit (less than like $9,999), is what I describe as "simultaneous multi-device, multi-room HDMI output".

More and more A/V receivers have 2 HDMI outputs now for sending any ONE of your A/V sources to a different room. I purchased this Yahmaha becuase it allows you to output any TWO A/V sources to TWO different rooms AT THE SAME TIME.

So you could connect all of your A/V devices to the A3020 in your living room. In my case I have an XBOX and a PS3 that get the most use. One person can play XBOX @ 1080p with 7.1 surround sound in that main room (via HDMI Out 1 and the speakers connected to the a3020's amplifier) and another person can, at the same time, watch a Blu-Ray @ 1080p on the PS3 in one of the bedrooms (via HDMI Out 2 using the TV's speakers). I just had to run 1 HDMI cord to the 2nd room.

Throw your old HDMI A/V receiver into the 2nd rooom and you can have 7.1 surround sound in that room as well, as the signal the a3020 sends is identical to what it is given by the source A/V device. Only when the 1st and 2nd room are utilizing the same device at the same time will the 2nd room sound signal be downgraded to 2 channel.

Like I said before, most A/V receivers in this price range only allow ONE person to use any ONE connected device in ONE room at a time. You can even leave the a3020 powered off and both rooms could just use the speakers built into their TVs and save some electricy.

The smart phone app makes selecting the inputs in other rooms easy. You won't have to buy a 2nd remote, disturb the person in the main room or even get off the couch.

5 out of 5 eggsLIke it

Pros: Easy to use controls. Great sound. Feature rich.

I replaced a 10 year old Marantz SCE7300 because I thought the Marantz had a thermal issue and would go into protect mode on any loud sharp noise. As soon as I turned on the RX it told me I had a wire fault and which speaker wire it was. Sure enough when I traced the wire I found that where I had put in a heating vent register the screw had just barely punctured the wire. Lucky for me the puncture was in a place in the wall that was easily accessible. I contemplated returning the RX, given that I know now the Marantz was just fine, but do enjoy the RX sound and features so decided to keep it.

Cons: I won't ding it for these mostly because it is a feature rich piece of equipment so you need to know what you're doing - but:

Initial setup can be complex. The manual (which is only on CD) could be better written. Some parameters are not explained in the manual and so you're left wondering if what you think they'll so is what they really do.

I will add though that the YPAO acoustic sound analyzer is very easy to use and works quite well.

Other Thoughts: Provide a paper book manual. Explain all features thoroughly as even if one is rather familiar with the overall technology the proprietary implementations can be hard to understand.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat receiver

Pros: Easy setup, lots of connections, great sound and network control.

Cons: None that I have found yet.

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a replacement for my Yamaha RX-V3900 and I cannot beleive how much better it sounds. It was easy to set up and configure. I have this connected to an Epson HD projector projecting on a 92" screen. I run my XBox 360, Blu-Ray player, cable box and Sage TV running through it.

It's nice to be able to contral this through my Motorolla RAZR phone too.
