Onkyo’s hi-fi revolution gathers pace with the TX-8050. This finely sculpted stereo receiver delivers two channels of audio precision to entertainment spaces where you don’t need advanced video processing or multichannel audio. Analog A/V inputs on the TX-8050 are augmented by digital optical and coaxial audio inputs, a Universal Port for Onkyo peripherals, and a front-side USB input for direct digital connection of iPod/iPhone. The receiver’s network capability, meanwhile, lets you stream internet radio or play audio from a PC or network audio storage device. Behind the smart aluminum facade lies a massive transformer and large capacitors that provide clean amplification power and help push performance well beyond the norm.

5 out of 5 eggsPERFECT!

Pros: -Easy Setup
-Connected to my network without issue
-Love the idea of streaming Pandora from my iPhone
-Onkyo REmote3 App finds the device every time.
-Sound is what I expected from a sub $400 receiver
--Speaker choice here will improve the sound--remember, garbage speakers equals garbage sound.

Cons: -None

Other Thoughts: No HDMI, but I knew that before hand...just read the specifications people!!

5 out of 5 eggsExactly what I was looking for!

Pros: Great sound, lots of useful features, simple to set up and use, plays very loud without distortion. The network and USB features all work very well. Build quality is excellent, very solid and heavy. Did I mention that it sounds fantastic?

Cons: None I can think of...

Other Thoughts: This is replacing a 5.1 surround receiver, which had blown all channels except "center". That one never sounded that good even when new, because all the surround modes made the speakers hard to hear, had to play it in "multi stereo" to get any loudness, and even then it was not very loud. THIS receiver, on the other hand, has full control over all speakers, and will go as loud as your ears can stand. I'll never buy another "surround" receiver. And this TX-8050 and little brother TX-8020 are the only "stereo" receivers I found that have dedicated sub-woofer outputs.

1 out of 5 eggsUnit failed

Pros: Fit a niche need for my home network. Newegg's service as always was superb.

Cons: Motherboard failure after 2.5 years of ownership. The cost of repair from the authorized Onkyo Service Center is more than purchasing a new unit under full warranty.

Other Thoughts: This was my first experience with Onkyo. It will probably be my last.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bargain

Pros: Very easy set-up, great sound with my JBL outdoor speakers. I am probably under-tasking this device as I am only using it to play itunes/ipod and internet radio on two speakers, and it can certainly do much more. I am very pleased with how quickly I was able to pull up my Pandora stations, and using the USB port for ipod was very simple.

Cons: The interface via the remote can be a bit tedious and cumbersome. It would be great if there were a way to program the receiver with favorites and such once it was on your network with some software.

Other Thoughts: I am very happy with this product.

5 out of 5 eggsStereo for the 21st Century

Pros: Network connectivity: I have this connected through a Linksys WET610N wireless ethernet bridge. The unit can be accessed through a web interface. I have set up several internet radio stations. Anything that has a URL and streams can be setup as a "favorite" station. I have several concerts from programmed into the unit. You can set up to 20 URLs as favorites in addition to Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, Sirius and some other stations that are built into the menu. You can also stream from another computer on the network with WMP but I have not tried this.

USB connection: I have hooked up a USB powered hard drive to the unit and it reads and plays it perfectly. "If the storage device has been partitioned, each section will be treated as an independent device.... Each folder may contain up to 20,000 music files and folders, and may be nested up to 16 levels deep." -From the manual. This means you can have as many files as you can fit on a hard drive (must be FAT16 or FAT32.)

Cons: Price is still a little on the high side but it does exactly what I wanted. I was considering dedicating a computer to my stereo so I could enjoy internet offerings and my digital music collection.

Other Thoughts: I love this receiver. It sounds great. Onkyo makes other ones with more bells and whistles for home theater but I was really just interested in listening to music so this is perfect. I did upgrade the firmware right away.
